BC Rail Caboose
Posted by polekat on Monday, March 9, 2009 1:44 PM

Hi, I was recently looking at some pictures of BC Rail cabooses and was wondering what the object on the roof is.It looks like a short tubby piece of pipe and a small pipe coming out of it then curving down. The 2 smoke stacks are at either end and this is where normally a single smoke stack is. i was thinking it may be a vent to the crapper. The book I am reading is called BC Rail and most of their cabooses have this object on their roof. Cheers from sunny Victoria except it is snowing today.

Is this what you're referring to?

They look like furnace stacks.  Is it possible these car had a furnace in each end?

If memory serves, one is for the space heater, the other is for the stove and oven.  Gets mighty cold in northern British Columbia in wintertime!

Simply, they are chimneys.
