Media speculates on new FRA head

Joseph Szabo, a former Illinois UTU official, is President Barack Obama’s top candidate to head the Federal Railroad Administration, reports Bloomberg's Angela Greiling Keane, quoting two unidentified sources she said are familiar with the matter.

Szabo, who until last month was the Illinois state director of the United Transportation Union, is being vetted by the Obama administration, reports Bloomberg News. The Bloomberg article said an announcement isn’t expected immediately, adding that the decision isn’t final.

Szabo, 51, has known the president since Obama was a state legislator in Illinois, reported Bloomberg, quoting an unidentified source.

Bloomberg identified Szabo as a former freight-rail worker and passenger-rail conductor, saying he is on temporary assignment with the union working on rail-safety issues in Washington.

White House spokesperson Nick Shapiro told Bloomberg, "We don’t have anything to confirm at this time," and the White House is "not commenting on speculation."

Szabo didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment, reported Bloomberg, and said the UTU wouldn’t comment on whether Szabo would be picked. "The decision on nomination is one for the Obama" team, said Frank Wilner, a UTU spokesman.
