There are railroaders who will probably be giving better, more precise explanations but....

First, it probably differs slightly from road to road.  However, the Trainmaster is next under Superintendant and/or Assistant Superintendent and is responsible for the operation of trains in his given district or terminal.  He usually will oversee all parts of operation and will have everyone from Assistant Trainmasters on down under his command including dispatchers, agents, operators, yardmasters, train crews, etc.  He is responsible for the safe and expedient movement of trains in his district and usually answers to the Division Superintendent.

Best definition is found in the operating book of rules of your favorite railroad.

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.
