I have frequently wondered why the railroads of today even bother with paint schemes. If economics are the main motivator, then why not just a basic generic color for all locomotives, like the icky color on the inside of the cabs, with the owning railroad's initials the only identification. <br /> <br />Like Ed mentioned, it would be the cheapest and easiest. And since locomotives are so frequently interchanged, maybe there would be less 'confusion' on the part of the casual observer. If they are not going to properly maintain the paint, they don't paint them fancy in the first place. <br /> <br />Of course, I am glad they do paint them.
