Boxcar Information
Posted by ttt on Friday, October 10, 2008 3:49 PM

I was looking at one of my boxcars and noticed a lot of information on the side.  What does it mean.  Here are the things I have questions about.

LT. WT.

EXW

EW

IL

IW

IH

Could anyone tell me what these mean?

LT. WT.  The weight of the empty car, in pounds.  (This number appears below the Load Limit ["LD LMT"]; the sum of these numbers adds up to the gross rail load of the car, usually 220000, 263000, or 286000 pounds.)

EXW  the extreme width of the car, in feet and inches, and (following an "H" on the same line) the height above the top of the rail, in feet and inches, at which the extreme width occurs.

EW  The exterior width of the car at its eaves, then (after the "H") the height of the eaves above the top of the rail, both dimensions in feet and inches.

IL  the interior length of the car, in feet and inches.

IW  The interior width of the car, in feet and inches.

IH  The interior height of the car, in feet and inches.
