As a former fireman for Santa Fe in the 1970's engine service could bid on a number of jobs that worked (I think) from San Bernardino to Barstow (Hill Pool) and San Bernardino to LA (Valley Pool). I think a day's pay equated to 200 miles and the engine crew was paid by the weight on the drivers.

Now however, I am told that the LA crews work to Barstow which as got to be be the better part of a full day. I guess the same is true of Bakersfield crews having to work to Barstow and back. I heard the pay is a flate rate no matter the tonnage.

What changed to create the new work pattern for the engine crews?

Who made the decision to change those jobs and their requirements?

Do many of them or how oftern do they go "dead" before tying up?

Do engine crews still mark-up in San Bernardino?

How many miles is it to Barstow from LA, Bfield to Barstow? ( Average trip time?)

What is the pay rate for each run? LA-Barstow, Bfield-Barstow.

Where does a new head get enough experience over that (those) roads to feel proficient?

How much seniority does it take to hold those jobs?

On the Southern Pacific the head end crews can go 220+ miles. Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo is 221.7 miles.
