BNSF and the CN/IC both have lines running north from Metropolis IL through the Shawnee forest. Those two are the only rail I know of going through that area any more.

The BNSF runs south from Marion to through the forest to Vienna, then on to Metropolis. CN starts south at Edgewood [off the Cairo line] to Robbs then into Metropolis where they cross the Ohio into Paducah KY.

I don't know about traffic, but when me n the wife were camping by Metropolis in July, the mornings seems to be the busiest.

BNSF has a lot of coal as does the CN/IC UP has trackage right on BNSF and CN(P&I) into Paducah. Most BNSF goes to cook coal termial in metropolis some makes it over to calvert city Ky on the P&L . CN has coal that goes into calvert and grain that goes into fulton. we are starting to see lots of graintrians to fulton. BNSF has a twice weekly local that runs to Paducah. We sometimes have 6 -8 train in daylight hours thru paducah. more on the edgewood cutoff  and bnsf in IL
