Tehachapi/Motels ???

Planning a trip west in late Sept. Any ideas on motels or bed & breakfasts near the Tehachapi Loop? Thanks for any ideas!

Never been there myself, so I can't say anything about accommodations. However, on a side note, there's a neat full-color overhead/aerial photograph of the loop on the MapQuest internet site along with a means of using that site to search for lodging, etc.

To see the loop itself, go to www.mapquest.com, and enter "walong" for the city and "ca" for the state (without the quote marks, of course, and don't bother with an address/intersection, it isn't needed), then click on "Map It!" On the next screen, click on "Big Map" to the top right of the map, then zoom in on the map (3 steps up on the slider to the right of the map should be OK) until the RR tracks and look pop into view. Click on the "Aerial Photo" tab at the top of the map, and fiddle with the Zoom and Pan buttons in case it's not perfectly centered in the viewing window. With patience, you can pan the view along to follow the tracks as far as you want.

I'll confess that I've never used this feature of MapQuest yet myself, but to search for information on lodging, etc., either backtrack to MapQuest's opening screen, or else click on the "Map a New Location" above the photo/map, and put "tehachapi" & "ca" this time. Below the map of the city should be a list of searchable items. Choose what you want, then click on "Update Map" at the very bottom of the screen. Again, you might need to fiddle with the pan and zoom to be able to get a good view. Apparently, clicking on the icons that appear after "updating" the map opens up another window with info specific to that location. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

i dont know of any hotels near the loop its self, but there are plenty of hotels in Mohave (i cant remember if that is how you spell it) and some in the town of tehachapi. from there it is just a short drive to the keene exit, which has signs you can follow to the loop. i get to drive by there all the time in my 18 wheeler. it is beautiful in the spring when they get some rain.
