18th Street Bridge, Chicago
Posted by MP173 on Thursday, July 31, 2008 4:45 PM

I was on Canal Street and crossed the Chicago River (South Branch) and was amazed at the size of the 18th Street Bridge.  Pulled over and took a couple of pictures...wow.

Was that the original PRR route into Union Station?  If so, I have seen many photos of that bridge, but never really took a look, other than from the Dan Ryan.  That is quite a bridge.

Does it only have Amtrak and commuter trains today?

The South Branch Bridge was/is actually part of Chicago Union Station Co. trackage and is the former PRR route into Chicago Union Station.  It currently hosts Amtrak and Metra (Southwest and Heritage routes) trains and run-through freights between NS and BNSF.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
