Trains DVDs

Hi,

I've been getting the Trains Ultimate Railroading DVD's and I was wondering how they compare to other train DVDs.  I'd appreciate any comments and recommendations.

I am getting the set for Christms,as each DVD comes out.The first two are very interesting!

I just received my third today in the mail on the F-unit and having a collection of over 150 dvds and videos on trains I must say that they are a little pricey for the content compared to many others on the market. I guess if I wasn't so lazy I would send them back. I enclosed my check with a note not to send any future ones without my knowledge or they won't be getting paid as I will treat it as junk mail and toss it.

Save your money and buy quality DVDS on rail their are many out there that offer far more value for money.

Thanks for the responses.  I like the movies, but I also thought they were kind of expensive. 

Can you recommend any other train documentaries?

Check out some of the Pentrex,Greg Scholl, Green Frog,C Vision, Chandos Televison Productions and numerous others. Some are really excellent. Hope this helps Checked my list this AM and have 196 DVDs and 84 Videos that I will eventually burn to DVD for my own use. They take up so much less space and no danger of the tape breaking.

I got all three DVD's I think they were great documentary. Especially the F-Units...I agree with the pricing is too high. I think they charge us for the collection of coins.

I've been getting the DVDs too, and I think compared to other videos they are very relaxed. They're not by any means for the foaming railfan. Not that they're bad, because they aren't, but I think the title is kind of misleading. With the title "Ultimate Railroading DVD Series", some people at first might think this is a strict railfanning video, with the trains going by, minimal narration & captions, and lots of locomotive information, etc. That's not what it is - they're really documentaries. In many parts of the videos I thought the music was stuck in right at the wrong times, like when there was a pause and they just showed shots of trains. 

But I guess I'm just used to the more strictly-railfanning DVDs now. For documentaries, the Trains DVD series is okay, but I think they should lower the price and maybe change the name of the series to something more like what it really is. I thought the "Tehachapi!" DVD was going to be more like Highball Productions videos, but it really seemed to go too fast with not much feel for where you were. I bet they spent more time at that guy's house witht the crossing signals then they did on the loop! BUT for a documentary it was fine.

A true "Ultimate Railroading DVD Series"? Probably not even close, but for documentaries they were very well made and I really enjoyed them.

No offence, but as far as "strict railfanning" DVDs go, I think I make better ones than they do .
(I really do make DVDs, but just for myself)

Would a railfainning video be just trains with less narration and explanation than a documentary?

If you want your railfanning to be pure and hardcore, try Big E Productions at www.trainvideos.com. Nothing but @#! trains...day AND night. After watching 144 trains on the UP, and about half of those by night, you just want to have a bath, a hot meal and go to bed, just like a real railfan trip! Still, the information he provides is absolutly priceless and can't be obtained anywhere else...details of train by train: where they came from, where they are going, and what they are doing. They are definitely a litmus test as to whether you are a foamer or not. Must have at least 30 or 40 of them: only Dick E knows for sure!
