BNSF Derailment bwtn Halpin & Melrose

BNSF has a derailment this morning at approx. 0025 on main line between Halpin and Melrose.  According to crew reports, train encountered a broken rail that put 21 cars on the ground fouling both mains.  "Hulcher" salvage crews were encountered on Hwy 34 five miles east of Osceola at 0930 this morning by crew shuttle van carrying crew members from four trains that were "tied down" back to Creston.  BNSF police were on scene to provide securtiy for "Z" intermodal train that was tied down in vicinity of wreck.  Crew men on board derailed train were okay.  Length of tie-up of BNSF mains no known at this time.

Latest update is that one main will be opened at approx. 2100 as crews are being ordered out of Creston at 1900 to travel to area and reboard "tied down" trains.  Going to be a BIG payday for Hulcher!

   Sounds like it was a bad in Iowa Yesterday with this derailment and the one the Union Pacific had at carrol Hutchler was a very busy company Does anyone know what they did with Amtrak 5 and 6      L:arry

More than likely Terminated the train at Omaha and bussed the passengers to final points also bussed all the passengers to Omaha that were going to the west coast then started next train there.

Is this in Iowa?

This should be in the US state of Iowa.  I just mapped both a "Melrose" and "Creston" on the CBQ(Burlington)  mainline that Amtrak trains 5 and 6 use in southern Iowa.   yesterday was quite a RARE day in Iowa with BOTH major east-west mainlines CLOSED due to derailments.   By the way the UP derailment was near Carroll, Iowa on the former CNW mainline.   I understand that Amtrak BUSSED those poor passengers for a 7 HOUR motorcoach ride to Chicago (468 miles).   (Boy, that certainly is a LOOONG bus ride indeed!)

Both BNSF main lines are now open and operating again.  Amtrak #6 came through at 8:25am with no problems.  The "Z" train was carefully guarded by BNSF police forces for it's entire stay just west of the derailment location.  Now the fun thing will be the 5 to 8 inches of snow that is to fall on the area of the derailment.

  Well according to the emulator we have 4 crews at Albia for pusher service. Have opening for osceola switchtender,Ottumwa Switchtender,Chariton Switchtender, and those have a 0700 and 2200 start time.

  Should be fun for them to try to get around this mess in heavy snow.

Snow is all but over.  BNSF now running "snow coaches" out of Creston both east and west to carry relief crews out to trains that are going dead.  Roads not in great shape and will be a while until van service will run crews over the road.  Traffic almost back to normal.
