Paint them all black. Pinstripe and swoop in different colors. Your paint can then fade even to shade of gray and look nice.
Black with just a little color - yes even the orange would look nice for many years. And I would think it would be easy to touch up - since we are seeing the older SD70's in orange and burn marks around the motor doors.
I know paint jobs are expensive, but advertising ain't cheap and this could be combined under a black and pinstripe/swoop. Think practicality.

How about we just paint the BNSF locos like this:...
then everyone can be happy
Anyone who thinks that locos should be all black should be sentenced to sit in one in the summer sun for a day. You would not believe how hot they get.
I like the BNSF engines for their real seats and window washers. So much nicer than our hunks of junk.

About 11:55AM today, I was in Kirkwood and saw the Pacific local go through. The lead locomotive was a standard UP but the second was HLTX, I believe #4828. They were both older diesels, GP35 or such, (I can't tell diesels apart) and the HLTX had a shiny new paint job which looked close to Rock Island maroon. The only decoration were the letters on the hood, the number on the cab, and chevrons on the nose, all in white.
Now there's an idea for anyone. It looked quite good and should weather nicely.
Although I like dark colored locos, I agree that I wouldn't want to work in one.

Black looks great on locomotives. I always thought the IC had something going with their black scheme. They added a little white, plus some green in their logo for an accent. And don't forget those classy little hoods that they mounted over their classification lights. Who else did that?

Besides, there's nothing wrong with the BNSF paint scheme. It grows on you. To think, when BNSF first put out their new "wedge" logo, I didn't like it at all. Now, I think it's the best, and it goes well with the orange/black/yellow paint scheme! If you don't like it now, give it some time...

Personally, my favorites have always been the H2 locos...but I never had a problem with the orange, it's visable enough, and it's unique

Actually, I've been impressed with the way H2 looks on some of the early ES44DC's. While I think Heritage III stands out better, Heritage II was also good. H1 is neat as well, but it mainly looks good on the GeeP's and SD's. All and all, though, BNSF's paint schemes are unique and they look great.

The wide-cab cowl SDF40-2's looked good in blue bonnet colors, so they probably wouldn't look to bad on the ES44's, ACe's and such. I bet BNSF will come out with heritage locomotives sometime soon....
Well, for all you 'orange' lovers - saw an engine with the cab the darker orange they are using presently and all along the one side was the faded "pink" of what looked like an old SD70 paint scheme. (mix and match doors)
Makes my black and pin stripes sound a whole lot better!

I dont think its ugly persay but it sure is LOUD and bleeding ! Its really hard to look at on video sometimes...I think they should have stuck with the fist H1 scheme(pumpkin) myself...
I miss the old BN the big logos on the nose the pilot strobe lights and there lease power.
And the sound of the SD40-2's climing Stevens Pass.

I think the BNSF colors are awesome. My favorite scheme is the H3. To me it's very sharp. I've seen the H1, H2 and H3 scheme. I rate the H3 scheme the best. I have model trains that have that scheme on them. I have pictures of that scheme. I also got a T-Shirt with that scheme. I really like BNSF and CSX. I really don't like NS for one reason but I'll accept it anyway and that reason is is it's black and white when on the new BNSF you got Black, Orange, Yellow and White. NS to me when I see it, it reminds me of watching through a Black and White TV. The only thing I like on there engines is the Horse Symbol. Also another reason why I don't like them is because on there mainline or road they don't put really any other road on there mainline. I went railfanning at Berea Ohio once for 5 hours and I saw 35 trains counting both CSX and NS. On the CSX 10 out of the 35 trains I saw were CSX and the rest were BNSF and UP and also SP. The rest of the trains on the NS were NS accept one UP Engine. That's why I really don't like filming NS. You'll always see it. I like it though but I hate it. You know what I mean.
I suspect if you grew up with the SF part of BNSF seeing orange engines looks odd. I grew up where GN was the big railroad, and of course the first "heritage" paint schemes were based on the old GN Pullman Green - Omaha Orange scheme, although now black has replaced the green. I think the first version with the round herald looked better than the elongated one used later BTW. Of course in my area the Milwaukee was a big player too so orange engines are 'normal' to me.
I'm obviously in a distinct minority here, but I like the current BNSF scheme. I think it's pretty sharp, and it has throwbacks to some BNSF predecessor color schemes (Great Northern in particular). I never did like the BN green - it looked (to me, at least) like someone had simply dipped the carbody in a vat of cheap paint, and it didn't weather well either. The last BN scheme (the multicolor scheme that their executive and newer freight engines used) was classy, but not long lived. The SF warbonnet scheme, of course, was a favorite with everyone.
