Happy New Year & knee update
Posted by Kathi Kube on Friday, January 2, 2004 9:47 AM
Hiyah! I hope everyone had a pleasant and safe New Year. Ours was quiet, but nice; good friends, good food, good board games.

A few people have been asking how the silly knee has been doing, so I promised I'd post an update.

Basically, it's almost entirely good news. My physical therapist says I'm doing much better than most people are this soon after surgery and expects to release me soon to continue working on my own. She's said I can return to my Tae Kwon Do classes, as long as I don't even attempt to do the splits or do any kicks. So, of course, I'm doing splits the one of three possible ways that doesn't hurt and kicking very carefully and slowly. (I've got to retrain the muscles, right?)

I saw my surgeon a week or so ago, too, and he's also very pleased with my progress, calling me a "very motivated" patient. (Is that synonymous with being very impatient?) Anyway, I showed him a list of what I'd be expected to perform at my next belt test, scheduled for Feb. 14, and he said he sees no reason why I shouldn't be ready. [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

The only news that isn't quite as good is that I still get pretty stiff when I walk outside and the weather's cold, and have this nasty pain under the knee cap when I forget to tighten my quads before moving certain ways. I still limp some when I get tired or achy, but even that's becoming less often.

So, aside from my own impatience, things are going very well, indeed.

Many thanks to everyone who's asked how things are going. (It's very humbling.) Just remember, if you're ever trying to break a board during a belt test and you need to pivot on one foot, lift your bloomin' heel. Cartilage doesn't twist very well.

Here's wishing you all the very best 2004.

Now I've got to go proof pages for our March issue. It's a pretty cool one...

Glad to hear you're doing better. I still am a firm believer that you'd get better results if you went out and sprung for a saw...make a little more precise cuts than just breaking them with your feet. [:)]

Just how was this knee damaged, Kathi? By kicking Mark Hemphill in the butt, perhaps?!!! [:D]

Great news, Kathi!
I'm very glad, too, that you're doing better. Keep us posted, OK?
All the best to you and everybody at Kalmbach & at trains.com, and to the members of this great forum.

Take it easy and have fun!
Oliver.

P.S. - I already received my February issues of Trains and Model Railroader yesterday, which is really great (it's a long trip to Croatia), and I can't wait to get back home and open them... we don't usually work Saturdays, but we have *inventory* - ? (you know, counting the boxes and bags and tins and cans at the warehouse).

Glad to here you are getting better, I know how you feel. On Christmas Eve, my little grandson caused me to trip going down to the basement and I busted up my foot pretty bad. It was alright though, after I got back from the hospital, I was waited on hand and foot all Christmas Day. It's good to be the king.

Kathi - glad you are doing better! Remember - some of this is age-related - .....

Just wanted to let you know I haven't lost my sense of ....something.....

Also, did you notice the right side ads are offering you a knee fix and shark cartilage - you may want to visit your own forum's ads! :)

Hmmmmm... You're a sassy one, Paul! (Ya gotta remember that kicking the boss is generally a bad idea.)

Actually, I tore some cartilage while breaking the board at my last Tae Kwon Do belt test. Yes, sawing it would have been easier, but not nearly as much fun.

Oliver--it's great you got your February issues already. (Much faster than I would have guessed.) I hope you enjoy them!

Scottydog--you've got to be careful, dear! Yes, being waited on hand and foot is great...for a short time. Heal well and watch out for cute munchkins hiding underfoot.

Mookie, it can't be age. Afterall, unless I turn the volume on my hearing aid up really high, I can't hear my joints cracking anymore. Surely that means I'm getting younger, right?[:D]

As for those ads, oh, my gosh! I hadn't noticed them, but that's really too funny!

Oy! Well, the April issue is calling. Take care!!

Good news for sure. All I can say is been there, done that, and got the T-shirt a long time ago. I was down to 3 degrees of motion when I started PT after getting "reassembled."

They called me a "motivated patient," too(LOL). I think that was PT shorthand for, "Let him work as hard as he wants - he'll be out of here quicker."

Keep it up.

work safe

No worries. The knee injury is thankfully more than a year old. It still gives me a little grief when it's cold and damp, but otherwise I'm back to all my activities -- and recently earned my blue belt in taekwondo. Life is grand.

Thanks!

Glad to hear the knee injury is doing well. Had a knee injury myself a few years back and I am still reminded of it whenever the weather gets damp...
