How does a coaling tower work

  • I would like to attempt to build a G scale coaling tower.  What I don't understand is how the coal gets into the tower.  I see the car dumps it's coal into an underground bunker.  Then there appear to be like two buckets that raise it up into a holder that will spill it into the tender via  a coal shoot.

How does the coal get from the underground bunker into those two buckets?

  • The best way to show how it works is if you have seen the Discovery Channel TV show "Gold Rush" the Dredges that Tony Beets is using, the bucket line on those is a basically horizontal version of the bucket chains that transfer the coal from the receiving bunker to the tower bunker. It would usually be more than two buckets, working in a continuous loop
