The tracks of the former Southern Pacific and then San Pedro & Southwestern Railroad between Benson and Bisbee, Arizona, which ran along the banks of the San Pedro River for much of its distance, are being torn up.
Discussions had been ongoing in an attempt to raise funds to save the rail line and ultimately connect it at Naco, Arizona with a line just across the border in Mexico, but the line is now being removed.
Several entities want to make it part of the Rails to Trails project.
