D M I R RR RDC

  • Does anyone have any photos of D. M. I. R. RR RDCs?

I think they look like the ones Aristo craft patterned their RDCs after.

  • The DMIR RDC was an RDC-3 built in 1953. www.missabe.com/rdc3.html

  • Decal sets are available thru the Missabe Railroad Historical Society.

BTW I believe they sold the RDC to the Northern Pacific Ry who used it in the sixties, then sold it to BC Rail (??)

  • It was sold to Northern Pacific, after that I do not know.

  • It was built 12-1952, and went to NP during 3-1963. It was not in use mid-1968, and gone by 1987.

  • DMIR's RDC-3 (which they numbered "RDC-1" because it was their first RDC) was as noted above rec'd Dec 1953 and sold to NP in March 1963, becoming NP B-42. Although it was retired in 1969, it was kept on the property by NP and then was sold by BN in 1972 to Amtrak. Amtrak renumbered it 40, and in 1975 sold it and several other RDC's to British Columbia Railway (BC Rail).

Both "Northen Pacific Railway - Diesel Era 1945-1970" (where I got the above info) and the King books on the Missabe, have good pics of the DMIR RDC. There is also a pic of it in Kalmbach's "Railroads you can Model" book 1 (and I think the recent combined version) on building a DMIR HO layout.

Or...go to the Missabe Historical Society website, they have a pic of it (in color) at:

I believe the RDC that Amtrak sold to the BCR was a former Great Northern Car, not the ex-DMIR car as the car was a Phase 2 RDC, not the Phase 1 car shown there.

Check out my entry just above this one of yours. Wink [;)] I wouldn't be surprised if BN didn't sell both NP and GN RDC's to BCR.

p.s. Technically RDC's didn't have phases, they had different model designations from RDC-1 to RDC-4 which I believe went:

RDC-1 all passengers (all coach seating)

RDC-2 passenger seating and baggage compartment

    RDC-3 passenger/baggage/RPO section

    RDC-4 baggage/RPO only.

    The DMIR's was an RDC-3.

  • Yes, I am aware there were 5 RDC models(don't forget the RDC9) but in 1956 Budd redesigned the RDCs coming up with the Phase 2 design. To make my point I am going to use 2 photos of a Budd RDC-1.

I may not know much, but I do know my RDC's. The DMIR RDC was not sold to BC Rail, the only RDC3 that BC Rail got from Amtrak was ex-GN 2350 that became BC-31:2. BC Rail had only one RDC of the Phase 1 design, ex-VIA RDC-1 6128 that was used for parts.

     See  pictures

This photo by Jeff Lubchansky shows the Phase 1 design. Note the head light, numberboards, windshields, pilot, washroom window behind the vestibule/cab. Check out the roof lines at the end of the cars. The grills and vents on the radiator domes were changed too:

Compared to my photo of a Phase 2 RDC-1. Note the different headlight position, smaller windshields, the numberboards moved to the end of the car above the windshields, the different pilot, no washroom window behind the vestibule/cab. Ignore the diaphram and ditch lights they were added by VIA Rail.

  • This was the RDC-3 that Amtrak sold to BC Rail.

  • Problem is there wasn't just one. According to the "Northern Pacific Diesel Era" book I mentioned above, there were three RDC-3's (NP nos. 40-41-42) that went to BN at the time of the merger, one of them was the ex-DMIR unit. According to the book's engine roster (pg.277) all three went to Amtrak in August 1972, who sold all three to BC Rail in 1975.

In the text it also states (pg.239) that the ex-DMIR unit, NP B-42 "as with the other NP RDC's...was retired from use in 1969. It was transferred to BN in 1970 and subsequently sold to Amtrak in 1972"..."In 1975 Amtrak sold car no. 40, 41 and 42 to the British Columbia Railway."
