UP Hiball in a Duststorm

  • Near milepost 544 on the Toya sub near Stanton, Texas on Sunday I caught this train temporarily revealed in the midst of a duststorm. The wind noise obscured the train noise and the dust was too thick to get a shot of the DP (2 units).

    Puts me in mind of a similar photo published in Trains more than fifty years ago - a NYC Niagara looming up out of a blizzard.

    The caption:  I wonder how many flights, highway trailers and barge tows left (location) on the day that NYC...

    Trains are the only form of transportation that can run reliably in extremely poor visibility.

  •  They sure aren't washing them, that's fer sure.

  •  Chuck, that is exactly what it seemed like -- LOOMING. Couldn't hear it coming, the dust thinned a second, and here it came. It wasn't a good day to try to get across the tracks with just a crossbuck and six feet visibility.
