quite simple. i grew up and saw the final days of CNW's old mainline to Itasca. it was taken out of service before they got crash 9s. as a result, i never saw any crash 9s in my past. that image of 8701 (or as i call it, UP 9805), was the first time i had ever seen one. and it did nothing for me. now i try to mourn CNW's death and all i ever get are "go fan the dash 9s!" as if people expect they would actually do something for me.
if it doesnt have a spartan cab, then it's not a CNW.
and lest we not forget, both units have UP plows, K3LA horns, UP font numberboards, armour yellow A/Cs, and they're just plain ugly as sin.
i hate them
Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

Ah. Now I get it. Did CNW have any other GEs other than those?

they first ordered C40-8s when they proved more useful for coal service than SD60s. they then ordered upgraded versions known as "C42-8s" about 1 year later. these units were for coal service in the PRB. Soon after GE announced the C44-9W, CNW was the first to place an order. being the cheapskates that they are, CNW ordered these without A/C instead of opting for a spartan cab like NS did. (CNW wanted the safety cab because of WY's climate). they placed a second order of C44-9Ws later on. Though they were not the first, CNW also placed an order for AC4400CWs. all of these units were painted with OLS. and many of them still remain with patches to this very day.
CNW's second order for AC44s arrived as UP units as they were murdered before the order arrived.
This reason is also why their SD80MACs never came. UP changed the order to those less-interesting SD9043MACs. it's a shame too, because i would've loved to have seen SD80MACs in CNW paint. Especially because those dont have those damn noselights like SD90s do! dammit UP!
and Robby, CNW only had 6 U30Cs. i believe they were testing them out to see if they were worth buying more of. apparently they didnt meet CNW's expectations
Well, just got two rolls of film back, and guess what?
THEY SUCK!!!
I'm not taking another picture that can easily be repeated until I get a 40D. Seriously. Gawd.
I posted another story-type-thing with a bunch of MRR pics...http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=65719
Tried to catch a train at Banff, but it was too damn dark and blue, and 1/30 will NOT stop a 40MPH train any more than a car will >_<
Other things to whine about:-Bad cropping, too much sky-Funky colour and contrast-Vignetting, I'm never shooting that lens wide open again!
Now, Lake Louise - This was supposed to be the money shot of all of fall.
...I tried. I can get that exact same crop with the 40D kit lens though, so I'm not that worried.
I believe I promised you guys another 2816 pic, so here's its sorry *** handed to you.
I hate this I hate this I hate this >_<
On a brighter note, I got a personal email from CP asking me to submit photos for their 2009 calendar.
Woooo.
*edit*
Just remembered that there are a pair of shots from my N scale that I now get to show off.
The canyon has come along a long way since then...I miss digital!
Go here for my rail shots! http://www.railpictures.net/showphotos.php?userid=9296

Matt, thats pretty freakin awesome that CP emailed you about that, congrats.
Other news, I have my benchwork finished (it has been for awhile) now all I need is my powerpack out of storage, and a few switches so I can lay the mainline now without needing to cut out slots for the switches, and wasting great Micro Engineering track. A slow process that isnt getting any faster. I think after Christmas I'll be up and running with the main atleast, maybe the yard if I get enough money for Christmas to buy the rest of the switches.
Alec
Matt, nice shots. To me they look pretty good.
Alec, I haven't heard much of your layout, lol. Let me guess, you model the Minneapolis Sub?, or just the North Town Transfer? (aka WC Transfer, I'm pretty sure it's also called the North Town Transfer too. Not sure.)

Matt, nice shots and congrats on CP contacting you for their calendar.
Since we are on the subject of model trains, I went to a model train show last weekend, no EJ&E stuff, but I did get a WC GP40 and a CNW C40-8 for my model RR. I also got a CB&Q Zephyr trainset, two engines and 5 cars including a dome. The WC GP40 should go along quite well with the F45 I got a few years ago. Jordan, I would assume Alec would be modeling something WC or SOO.
Robby I would think so too. Also who made the GP40. Atlas? I got one but would like ot get the 3007 one they made. They pop up on Ebay every so often. But I don't have the money right now to pay back my parents.
Not sure if I already said this but about 2 weeks ago my WC P2K SD45s came. I don't knaow how they run, but they shouyld be good because they are Brand New.
Matt; I think they look fine! The first one looks pretty good, I like the speed blurring of the train! You should tell everyone you meant to do that!
Is it just me or is everyone here from the midwest? I feel so alone!
