I was lucky to catch one of those ES44ACs brand new. I have seen quite a few of these before but never brand new. It was pretty cool. plus I caught the train at the right ime too. They had to sit in the siding for that other coal train and a tac train, so it was going quite slow and then stopped in front of me. The thing that amazed me though was how quiet that locomotive was. All three locomotives were really very quiet. That horn though is really loud.Anyway thanks for the compliment!Happy railroadingJames

Now that's true. We got there and the train had a red light. So we waited...waited...waited.... Alright what's going on. We go to the other side of Carlton and all the signals are dark... So we leave the train behind. 15 miles ahead we get back to Boyleston and guess what... The signals at Boyleston were lit for the train we never saw at Carlton. So we missed the other train that our train was waiting for. So that was a run of bad luck. But we did se some trains which was nice.
I got a chance to get out and do a little railfanning myself yesterday afternoon, taking advantage of the sunny skies and the blanket of snow on the ground.
First stop was Lyndon Station (a small town just North of Wisconsin Dells), for a two hour late Amtrak 8, the Eastbound Empire Builder:
As you can see, Snowmobiliers often park their sleds and walk about a block down to get a drink or a meal. I had a better shot lined up with a few more snowmobilies, but unfortunately they decided to drive off before the train showed up. So, I settled for the shot above.
Shortly after that shot, the Dispatcher came on the radio and started giving "CP 8636" a GX crossing malfunction for a place shortly up the road. Using my powers of deduction, I figured he could be no where else but Lewiston Siding, which is just to the South of Wisconsin Dells. Amtrak was still just making his station stop, and so we had just enough time to get down to Wisconsin Dells to a spot I always have wanted to do, but hadn't yet had the chance:
This was a long manifest freight, and he was still working on getting up to track speed after leaving the siding as he worked through the S curve. Got to love the SOO SD60 too (and if only it had been leading....)!
It sounded like Amtrak had some fun shortly after his station stop too. As he passed the freight at Lewiston Siding, the engineer told the crew of the freight that they had struck 4 deer about a mile before the siding, and that there was probably a mess up there....
Nice pictures Noah. I really like the Amtrak train. I have a couple questions. First, Do you know what passenger train it was? The other question, How fast were they going?
Also really liked the CP train. But those poor deer. oh well.
Nice shots!!!

Well, in my professional opinion, I am going to have to say Amtrak.

Oops.... I over read that... Sorry I guess I should read a little better next time.
Roger, The Empire Builder.
Yep, 'twas indeed the Empire Builder. The Hiawathas don't make it up this far, they only run between Chicago and Milwaukee. The only Amtrak trains through here are the east and westbound Empire Builders. Where I shot them they should have been doing their top track speed of 79mph. They do have a few permenant slow orders in the area though for 65 mph.
