Favorite modern locomotive

  • I like the AC4400CWs the most. A CNW AC4400CW is as good as it gets in my mind.

  • My absolute favorite model of locomotive is the SD40-2 (and the older SD-40). No other model of six-axle locomotive has been running on the rails as long, or has been as reliable as this model. The GP-9 comes in a close second. As for the newer locomotives, I like the SD70s the best, especially when I see the likes of UP, BNSF and CN (sometimes mixed in consists) running on the CN mainline through my hometown.

  • I voted for the SD90, just for the size and powerful looks. Steerable trucks, big radiators, 6000HP with the H engine! Awsome! Looking back I would still say you have to consider the UP's Turbines; ALCO/GE did this over 50 years ago! 8000HP, but a fuel guzzler and the 'Big-Blow' sounds. I love the Veranda version in the more tame 4500 HP powerplant. It looked powerful and fast just standing still!

    1.BNSF SD70 in green and ivory because of their unique colors. Better get them while you can

    2. Was at SSI in Scotia,N.Y. several years ago when they were assembling the UPRR SD70M's. They invited me on board 4152 with no paint while they were doing load tests. What a great experience. If you are ever in that area, stop by because you will never know what they are working on.
