Greatest train to the Northwest

  • For me, it´s the two tone green North Coast Limited in the time between 1954 and 1959. A beautiful long snake with 4 domes matching to the woods of the Northwest. Plus luxurious on board service without extra fare. This is it!
    What do you think???

  • Having ridden the CASCADE, CITY OF PORTLAND, NORTH COAST LIMITED, EMPIRE BUILDER, and SHASTA DAYLIGHT. Without a doubt it was the GN EMPIRE BUILDER after it received its domes in 1955. No other train in North America offered as many seats under glass as the Empire Builder prior to Auto-Train. The train like the NORTH COAST LIMITED was a clean window train and having traveled the Builder the most even got to know several crew members over the years. Dining car service was second to none.
  • My vote goes to the NP. But most Missoulians that I know who moved here on the train years ago, say they rode the Oly-Hi.

If I could go back in time & ride any NW passenger train, it would be over Crow's Nest Pass and/or the Kettle Valley line.
  • GREAT NORTHERN ALL THE WAY!!!

  • I second that!!! I love thwe old Empire Builder!!!
  • I never had a chance to ride any of these classics-but no votes for the Olympian Hiawatha with that magnificent Skytop observation car?

  • from bob t. hi fellas, ever see the combined north coast limited-empire builder-twin cities zyphyr on the c.b.&q. to chi-town back in the 1960s? 20 to 25 cars,4 to5 e-8s up front.i never got a ride on it,but was it ever impressive to see it blast through town at 80 m.p.h. !! darn, i never took any pictures!
  • The Empire Builder with all the Superior Service it had.
  • It depends upon how you define "Northwest." I would think the CNW 400 would do the trick to get northwest from either Milwaukee or Chicago.
  • I vote for the Olympian Hiawatha, with its full length dome,Skytop observation, and two streches of electrified operation[:p]!!!
Ride Amtrak. Cats Rule, Dogs Drool.
  • THE EMPIRE BUILDER, why? Do you have all those domes on the amtrak empire builder? I think not! How could anybody resist the omaha orange pullman green and yellow of the g.n.
