Have you thought about railroad crossing bells this way?

  • This may seem silly, but I have noticed something about railroad crossing bells. They all seem to have different tones, the most common being the type of bells on the crossings on Marias Pass on MSTS. In California, there is a high-pitched type which sounds similar to those new kinds of bells that are computerized. There are also many other types of bells I have heard. Whenever I hear railroad crossing gates, I pay attention to the sound of the bell as well as the train. Have you ever noticed the same thing as me? P.S.: Do not think I'm silly!

  • I never did give too much thought to the tones of the bells at grade crossings but it is something to think about. The computerized bell tones are probably the worst sounding and the sound doesn't seem to carry too far.
My personal favorites are the old locomotive bells that seemed to be standard equipment on the watchman's tower at manned grade crossings.

  • Not to change the topic but,I wi***he govnment would put a BAN ON TRAIN HORNS, which will never happen! Just a thought no.BNSFfan.
  • A government ban on horns on trains could be subtitled "The Liability Attorney Full Employment Act". I'll leave it at that.

  • Well with the grade crossing bells I know there are elecronic and non-electronic but I dont really pay to much attention to them, sorry kylerama.
  • I usually can't hear them over the train anyway.
  • I noticed that my favorite ones are the non computerized ones with the real bell sound.
  • Actually I don't mind the electronic ones, they sound a bit like chimes. They show up alot at newer crossings (especially on light rail/transit lines). But I do like the older bells better.
  • [:(!] I don't like the sound of the electronic bells. Theysound too fake.Give me real bells any day.[:)]
Ride Amtrak. Cats Rule, Dogs Drool.
  • [#ditto][#ditto] I agree entirely. There's nothing like the sound of those bells when you sit at the crossing. the electronic stuff, from what I've heard, just aren't as good.
