Teen Railfan Place - Winter 2009 Thread Locked

  • Well, given certain circumstances, here's the two week report over the last two weeks.

First up, here's a shot of the CHS Switcher pulling a cut of cars

Also, a shot of DM&IR 211 leaving the yard briefly.

As is customary, I take one day where I simply focus on railfanning the Superior area, given that Proctor is dead these days. This week, it was Wednesday. So, I head over there, and don't find much hopping at the BNSF yard, so I head down to Pokey, and find a ton of maitainence, so I don't hang around too long. Then, I decide to head down North 56th down to Stinson, where a SOO and a CP GP are switching. The shot didn't turn out too well, however.

As I pass through the Oil District, and make my way to the east side of Superior, I head down to Itasca Yard, since I've always wanted to shoot some UP stuff. I acheived that goal. First up, SD70M 4336

Behind it is a rather sharp looking ES44AC 7402

And a shot of the consist itself

Also of note is a GTW Boxcar

And of course, even though they're simply switching, video is a must

From there, I head back toward home, and decide to sort of scope out some areas I haven't been to quite yet, and head down Grand Avenue to try and locate Steelton Yard. I don't find it, but I decide to trek to Oliver, and found the bridge with the rails above the yard rather fascinating. As I figured, it was a quick trip to Oliver, and to Pokegama Road. Here's where things get borderline depressing/aggravating. I head past the road, and see some Orange. Right then, I know I should just keep driving, and that I would only find anger and disappointment through turning around. Well, of course, I can't kick the curiosity, and turn around. As I figured, there are the J units that I've been searching for time and again after catching them once. And with some board being on the side of the road, no chance of a decent photo.

Rounding out the week is a shot of B&LE 903 in Proctor Yard.

  • EJ&E 659 has now been reassigned to Pokegama Yard, which means 659, 660, 662, 665 and 666 are now up there. Now I'm getting a bit curious, perhaps its possible they will be out into service on the DM&IR when ore traffic picks up. Remember, Proctor requested that 6 EJ&Es be sent up there right after the takeover, and there are now 5 up there. Somehow I would not be shocked if one more goes up there.

  • I didn't make it up to Bay Head todaySigh According to my mom "There's too much traffic on Memorial Day weekend, so you can't go. Ugh... But I'll definately make it up there this summer.

Also forgot to mention this week's spottings:

One day (I forget exactly when it was, maybe Wednesday?), on the way to school I saw a train with about 5 or 6 Comets in Lake Hopatcong. I didn't get a count or anything really, but I definatley saw a CV, a CIIM, and the loco was a PL42AC. The same night, I saw a train through the trees departing Netcong. The only thing I know is that there was at least two CVs in the consist (I could tell by the rooftop air conditioning.

  • Word has it CNW 8646 and CNW 8701 have been placed into storage, but where UP decided to store then was a bit of a surprize. From what I have heard, both of them are stored at IRM. IRM did not get them donated to them, they'll sit at IRM until they are needed back in service on the UP.

  • Nice shots there Brent....Looks like you and Jordan had a nice trip....Nice pix as well Jordan....I know you will post yours here...So I'll say it now cause I seen all yours at another site....

    J Trane
  • Thanks J. Where did you see my pics? Flickr or Fuzzys? Also, the branch to 3M really doesn't have a grade, maybe a slight grade going down to the plant, but that'd be it.

I'll post my trip report as soon as we get on a new page. I also have a trip report from today, I did a chase of a Empty BNSF coal train south. I also caught WC 3000 leading again today.

  • Nice stuff guys.

I should be going up to a location a few hours away, that I found with a friend this winter. We've been wanting to shoot it ever since.

If you follow my Youtube videos, as well as Sean's, you know I'm talking about Daveluyville. (Ty should know what I'm talking about! Tongue)

    Alex

  • I'm supposed to know what you're talking about? That wasn't in my contract! Is it the "gravel pit" location? Smile,Wink, & Grin

  • Sigh Thought you would have remembered Sean's shot...

    EDIT:
I just saw Sean posted compilation video with some of his shots, similar to the ones I posted and took. Watch until the end, and see some nice snow drifts!

  • No, it's been a while since I've watched that one... The music doesn't do it for me, unlike some of his other shots with music. Just didn't fit the theme and shots, in my mind. I'm looking foward to seeing those locations in summer though!

  • Yep, it should be nice. Maybe get 2-3 good shots, then go a bit further north. I can't imagine spending the entire day there, it's a little too slow, because of the grade and the curve. Maybe we'll head a little farther north, by then we won't be too far from Quebec City.
