  • Gotta learn the lay of the land. I assume you got stuck near the cemetary?

    The Missabe Road: Safety First

  • Actually, I plowed through that area just fine. However, in my haste to make a U-turn near the crossing down Black Bear Road, I went too far into the grass, and with the rain the previous day, the ground just sunk, burying my front passenger side wheel.

On the subject of "lay of the land," where are people getting these nice, close up shots of the power sitting in Pokey, anyway? That would realistically make things a little easier for me searching for J units(BTW, where is CN hiding them these days?)?

From what i know i believe that 1 of the 2 initals on the mcars is TTPX, they go to Thillmany mill In Kaukauna. these can be seen in the Neenah Yard. i know there was a discussion going on wcinfo & wisrail a while back about these.

    Brent or Jordan....

Can you get a good side shot of these cars???

They'll be back, the economy is still bad, and engines are still getting stored. When the economy picks up again I'd expect the CNWs to be back in service. BNSF has even began to put the SD75Ms into storage, as well as some of the C40-8Ws. CP is storing a bunch of the SOO SD60s and SD60Ms It's bad now, but I expect that a lot of this stuff will return, so it's something to look forward to.

    Yes and no.

The economy has a big factor in this, but the new lower emissions rules also play a part in it.  The class 1s definitely seem like they're trying to switch to the new low-emission units as quickly as they can. (UP even put the E9s into storage! And those aren't even road power!)

Could the duo return to service after the economy improves? It's possible. It might even be probable. But also consider that they are among the oldest C44-9Ws in existence. And would be among the first to be retired when UP starts phasing them out. And with their agreeing to not renumber them, you should also consider that it could be a sign that they intend to retire them soon and thus would just be wasting money patching them anyway.

Well, CN stalled on the hill again! This time they got the brilliant idea to run two EJ&E SD38-2s on a taconite train instead of 3. When I saw it go through Crest Hill, I was hoping they would add a second engine to the train, but what do you know, they didn't! It didn't even make it to the steepest part of the hill and staled. CN had to push it with two EJ&E SW1200s, and of course, SW1200s spark when they aren't in the yard, so they had a nice spark storm going, lucky they didn't start any fires. It blocked every crossing in Joliet, as well at the Metra diamond, causing significant delays to Metra as well as tieing up every road. CN just never ceases to amaze me with their blatent stupidity on the J. It's hard to believe CN is actually stupid enough to try running trains up Joliet Hill with two SD40-2s or two SD38-2s. I through they would've used 3 engines after the 6028 stalled last week but they did it again.

The intergration of the EJ&E really couldn't be going too much worse than it is now. There have been numerous signal problems nearly every day, brush fires, and now trains stalling on the hill every week it seems.

  • Well, here's the weekly recap:

Monday, I venture over to the Superior side, since Proctor is now starting to really quiet down. Over there, I spy a few things of interest. First up, a consist of Soo locomotives waiting to pull their train out of the BNSF 17th Street Yard.

Over at Rice Point, two CP GPs hang around waiting for assignment

And last, but not least, I manage to stumble into the infamous "Whale Car."

From there, things were quiet, with maitenence going on in and around Pokegama, so it's back across the bridge and back home. A few hours later, I discover a Limestone train(once again, consisting of quad cars instead of the regular Limestone cars), headed up by two repainted Tunnel Motors.

And then comes Wednesday, where I first found another Limestone train(with regular cars this time around) with DM&IR 403 at the front. I head out with the intent of coming back later, and scoping for the J's across the pond. Of course, that's where things went haywire, with me getting in a hurry trying to get turned around and in front of an inbound stack train. After two hours, things are back to normal, though I find 403 had left. However, a trip to Adolph solved that problem, as it was just heading out. In Munger, I was kept entertained while waiting by a CN Manifest, and a Stack train going up the DW&P(with a DPU). At last, 403 rounded the corner.

The twin ports were always premium, photo shooting turf to me! CP and BNSF yards so close to each other there. Ya can't beat it!

Always nice to catch the MRF too!

    If you did?

  • The Manifest? No, I arrived just as it was crusing through the crossing, so no shot of that one, or the Stack, though it would have made an awesome video to shoot the Stack crossing over the Missabe tracks, and then simply pan down for the Limestone.

And yeah, the Ports are awesome. I'm proud to live there.

  • So Robby, what's this about "The SD38-2s never stalled on Crest Hill" quote? Tongue I guess CN is out to prove everyone wrong in their failure to manage their power...

  • Well you gotta run them correctly! Failure is a understanding, this is getting downright ridiculous, two times in a week. It's Joliet Hill, Crest Hill is the city next to Joliet, lol. The hill really doesn't have a name, so I just call it Joliet Hill since it's in Joliet, much like Proctor Hill. The real J never had problems going up the hill, but with CN's "run as few engines as possible" strategy, things haven't been working very well. Unfortunatly, this is just the beginning. Unlike the WC and DM&IR takeovers, CN has wasted no time making massive changes to the EJ&E. They are already starting preliminary work on some parts of the line to begin laying down the new double track. CN is supposed to double track from Eola to Walker on the Western Sub (now the Leighton Sub but w/e) and Joliet to Frankfort on the Eastern Sub (now the Matteson Sub but again, w/e). I'm also still getting confused by this north/south business. I guess I simply can't get rid of the J way of doing things. Also, on my recent Youtube videos you'll notice that I refuse to call it north/south or the Leighton and Matteson Subs. Yes, it's CN now but for the third time, w/e.

  • Robby,

anything on power for franklin park yet?

  • Nope, nothing official yet. I'm still hoping for a F40C or some kind of specially painted UP engine. I did just learn that UP 1995 is schedule to be on display for Rochelle Railroad Days in early June. There should be something good on display, one of the CN or IC E units is almost a sure bet, as well as something from the IHB and probably something from the Belt Railway.

  • BNSF & DMIR 4Ever

And yeah, the Ports are awesome. I'm proud to live there.

good man! I dont call that my favorite place in the whole world for nothing!

Sine you live around there, you wouldnt happen to know if the old NP ore dock is still standing in Superior? I know part of it was removed for a marina, but I heard most of the dock would remain as is.

The MRF was the first train me and Max caught on our little adventure.   It was a blast. I'd do it again in an instant.

    Ohh Duluth....I feel homesick :(

  • Yesterday me & my freind felt like goin for a drive he drove, i just rode.

stopped at nelsons, i gotta come back to this bridge on a nice day

decided to head over to point

the 405 train was getting ready to leave point they had 2676 & 5531. SB 340 was also passing by.

  •  Ahh nice shots, Brent. Neat C40-8M.And I heartily agree on the bridge. They always offer very nice angle opportunities.

For proof, I present exhibit A!

A bridge....of a bridge! I like how it turned out too! I tried to do this with the DDA40X earlier that year, but my camera somehow went into video mode without me knowing...so i ended up getting a video of it instead. I made it work though :P

I must say CN has a nice paint scheme if you ask me.  Especially nice in that "meet" shot. Something nearly impossible to see in Altoona!

Always wanted to fan at Point. How much traffic does that yard see?
