Teen Railfan Place - Winter 2009 Thread Locked

  • well i got into a deep hole, looks like franklin park isnt gonna happen this year, me & my freinds got into some trouble & my parents took my license away. also my camera which i paid for, grounded me from the computer, still got school &my phone tho, so looks like back to the bike & my camera phone
  • Sorry Brent, that sucks...

I'll be able to drive this summer, but not alone. I'll still be on my bike for another year yet...

EDIT: CN has a list of 137 locomotives for sale. A sad sight I must say:

    http://www.cn.ca/documents/About-CN-Surplus-Assets/Loco-spring-sale_2009.pdf

We should all save up, and we can save an RS-18! :)

  • Hey Jordan......What are the reporting marks on these wood chip cars:

    http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=172392&nseq=15

Also would you be able to get some side shots of these black wood chip cars when they are in the Wausau Yard???  The sooner the better.........Thanx

  • How about instead of saving a RS18, we save up money for EJ&E 650, it is included on the list! If not 650, there are other tempting engines on that list, DM&IR SD38-2s, DM&IR SD40-3s, IC 6071, WC 3025 or WC 6006. Let the Delaware Lackwanna find out about the RS18s, they'll take care of you there. Smile

IC 6071 is a very historic piece of equipment, being the first SD40 ever built on a SD35 frame. Notice that 6071 is highlighted in red. I can think of some things that might mean, but I'm not exactly sure what's up with that.

IRM could use something to go along with the 7525, and a EJ&E SD38-2, DM&IR 214 or IC 6071 would go perfect. I'd like them to get the 650 but they could also go after the 214 and restore it into it's original EJ&E paint. Remember, with the economy down, scrap prices crashing and the lack of a need for leasing, this may be a good time for a shortline, regional or a museum to get a bargain on some good engines. Lots of SD38-2s, SD40-2s and SD40-3s to go around in this auction, and you never know, now might be a good time for the WSOR to add to its SD40-2 fleet!

  • J,

From what i know i believe that 1 of the 2 initals on the mcars is TTPX, they go to Thillmany mill In Kaukauna. these can be seen in the Neenah Yard. i know there was a discussion going on wcinfo & wisrail a while back about these.

  • The WSOR has a line of 6-7 temporarily stored locomotives in Horicon right now (including the entire business train from what I'm told) so I doubt they'll be after any new power for a little while. Besides, they're still working on the Mexi-wrecks up at Horicon too. But you never know, they may decide to plan for the future. You are right that if they needed engines it would be a good time to go looking it seems.

Nice pictures from the Winona trip Jordan. I've been wanting to find the 487 going up Stockton Hill for quite a while, but haven't managed to catch them. What time of day did you see the train? Might be helpful intel to know for the future.

Nice shots from NYC Ty. Sort of a trip down memory lane for me, as I rode through and/or photographed at quite a few of those spots when I was in NYC last August too.

The SP 4449 group and the Friends of the 261 have finally announced the ferry move schedule for it's visit in July and August. It sounds like they'll take the BNSF between MSP and Chicago on the way east, and on the westbound trip they'll take the usual CP routing. I hope it a nice sunny day, as I can think of a bunch of nice locations to shoot the daylight at around LaCrosse....

  • Today's State Line was fun. CN ran a SD40u, a SD40-2W and EJ&E 660 on the train. For some reason they cut the 660 out and isolated it. They tried having the train run up the hill with two SD40-2s, and guess what, it didn't make it! CN 6028, the leader, started smoking heavily, so they stopped the train. After about 10 minutes, they tried moving again, but the two SD40-2s were not enough to get the train moving again, so they had to cut the 660 back in. Finally, they were able to get the train up the hill. It's funny how EJ&E never had any problems with that hill, but CN stalled.

  • It's a sad day, TR 1587 has returned in a new coat of paint. Sad I miss the old Greenish Blue Tomahawk Railway scheme, this just won't fit in with the north woods.

Alright J, here are the reporting marks for a few I saw.

    TPPX: 70058
              70122
              70031
              70016

EDIT: Noah, the DME train left Minnesota City about 9ish-10ish, around that time.

  • It's kind of sad that I can now lump all the railfanning activities for the week into one post.

First up, a CP Geep sits awaiting its next assignment.

Next up, DM&IR 215 pays a visit to Proctor. With the shots I took of her, I now have pics of the three remaining units still sporting Maroon.

And last, but not least, DM&IR/CN 402 leads a train of Limestone north out of Proctor Yard. Oddly, this train of Limestone isn't being hauled with the usual Limestone Cars, but with the quads.

  • My trip to NY was fun last night, even though I came back with no pictures. I'll have a trip report tomorrow.

Today, I explored part of the Morristown & Erie's Chester Branch in Succasunna. I got some pix, and those will be up tomorrow also.

  • Well Looks like i might be going to franklin park after all.

My brother has a thing down at UTI that day & my parents are required to come so looks like i might be in luck here.

robby, how far is FP from Glendale heights? also if i do go what should i bring with me? scanner, lawn chair, etc.

  • Nice catch on DMIR 215 BNSF! I find it funny that all the DMIR locomotives have either been retired or repainted from my first trip, but the last three I needed on that trip are the only ones left. Thankfully I've caught the 215, 403, and 211.

Hey Noah, I remember you telling me about this journal that published when the boats would be heading to the dock in Marquette for loading. Do you have a link to this journal, or do you know what times in June the Boats will be at the dock? I would like to head up there in June before the LS&I takes delivery of their SD40-2s.

  •  Well here;s a quickie

This project took me 8 hours to make! The program was too big to fit on the machine in its entirety. In fact some of the steps in the program were too big too! 3 endmills broke while making this part too, But finally after 8 hours, an aluminum ball and bar emerged from my CNC mill!

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  •  Jordan, I'll have to get back to you on the source for the mining journal boat schedules. I have a friend who checks it, but I've never bothered to ask him where he looks the information up.

I do know though that the LS&I has been fairly sporadic so far this year. The LS&I only works when a boat is in at the dock (they don't have stockpiles like the Missable and NSM do). This year the boats have been less, on average one every 3-4 days. According to my friend who's been up there a couple of time this year, if there's a boat in they are running the three shifts like normal, but if there's no boat due in they most you may see is the 0700 weigher (to transfer the CN All Rails) and 0700 yard, and even that doesn't run every day. The good news is it sounds like they won't shut down for an extended period over the summer like they were originally talking, but it could be hit or miss. That's where knowing if a boat is due in comes in handy. I'll get that information and get back to you.

Sad to see the TR unit come back in G&W paint, but I guess that's the way it goes. I like the green and white better too...

  • Not a whole lot going on this weekend, but I did manage to get a couple of empties:

BNSF Coal Empty #1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5BXXIhCnts BNSF

    Coal Empty #2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-qBM6ThDQE&feature=channel_page

Went venturing out today, with nothing else to do at the time. The 17th and 28th St. Yards were active, with a GP bringing in and switching a large Manifest, an SD40-2 also switching elsewhere in the yard. Pokegama was quiet, with a ton of trackwork going on, pretty much killing a shot at the J units making an appearance. From there, I went back into Superior, and caught a few shots, such as a Soo consist, and the now infamous "Whale Car" hauling a load of coal. From there, I found a way into Rice Point without trespassing, and caught a few shots of the CP GPs hanging out there. Pics will have to wait until Friday, however.
