old route maps

Hello--A friend of mine lives in selkirk on the north side of lake erie in southern ontario.He frequently takes his snowmobile on the recreation trails,which used to be rights of way for various railroads. He has asked me to find out if there are any maps (historical or otherwise)available for these lines.If so could you please let me know. Thanking you in advance --tenappolee.[8D]

Check a bigger library (especially at a college) for topographical maps, or simply for old maps. Township or county offices would be a good source as well.

Just make sure the rails are gone. A friend of mine worked for a tourist line on the east coast. They were making a run with a cut of cars and a Baldwin switcher cab first. They caught up to a snowmobiler running up the tracks ahead of them. The snowmobiler had his back to them and over the noise of the snowmobile and the muffling of the snow he couldn't hear the eninge coasting up behind him. They waited until they got about 100 feet behind him and then laid on the bell and horn. He saw the train gunned the snowmobile, and went flying over the bank into the woods. I'm sure he thought twice about using live RR tracks as a trail.

Oh my, I hope someone checked on that snowmobiler to get the toohpicks out of his teeth. If you were here in the US I would say check with, I believe the interstate commerance of your area.[#oops][wow]

Wal Mart sells DeLorme atlas books and these show a lot of detail. I have one of Indiana that shows railroads that were abandoned years ago,plus county roads in great detail.Doesn't tell the names of railroads though. Maybe walmart has a Delorme atlas for Ontario? It cost $20 Joe G.

CHECK OUT "www.tmbooks-video.com", they have railroad atlas, for most area's of the u.s.a., I have one I carry in my pickup all the time,about same size as auto atlas. HUB
