Tip for getting grades just right

I am currently working on the the grades for my HO layout and had a tip to share with the group. When trying to fine tune the grade try using old business cards to shim the subroadbed or bank the turns. The stock I use takes about 20 cards to the 1/4". Other tips you have on working with grades are welcome here. Jeff
