Good Morning Diners!  Flo, coffee stat!

How about them Chiefs!  Honestly, I thought it was a pretty boring game most of the way, but the end was good!  I still don't understand why they start the game as late as they do.  Even if it didn't go into overtime, it still gets over with unnecessarily late in the Eastern time zone.  It will be the annual post-Super Bowl Monday at work with everybody dragging tail.

Hope everyone has a good day today.

Good morning, diners.  A football celebration breakfast of bacon, eggs, and coffee, please.

I've been to several Chiefs games at Arrowhead, and they are as much fun as any game you can go to.  Noisy, too.

Completely agree.  At one time I thought they should have a Saturday evening Super Bowl, but I know that probably wouldn't work, either.  Earlier Sunday afternoon seems the best bet for the future, but I'm willing to bet it won't happen.

Another of the great named trains, the Panama Limited.  It was an overnight trip from Chicago to New Orleans on Pullman cars.  I would have loved getting on that train, having a nice Creole dinner in the dining car, enjoying the drinks for an evening in the lounge, then heading to bed, and waking to a dining car breakfast.

Today, the trip can be made in three hours by driving through heavy traffic to the airport, fighting crowds going through security, sitting with your knees up to your chin next to people you would not like in everyday life, and enjoying a tiny bag of chips.  Progress!

Have a great start to the work week.  For me, Monday is just another day off.

John:  My wife's parents were friends of the folks who owned Blue Bunny ice cream.  This was in the 1960s in Sioux City, Iowa.  I don't know who owns Blue Bunny now, or where they are headquartered, but they make a really good sugar-free vanilla ice cream.

The tv was on, but I really didn't pay attention to the game.  I don't understand people who watch the game just because it is the Super Bowl.  My favorite team wasn't in it, so meh.  These days I would much rather watch hockey.  Go Stars!

The ice cream container says that Blue Bunny is from La Mars, Iowa.  I know Le Mars is just a short distance from Sioux City.

I looked it up and found that the company is owned by the Wells family.  It's the largest family-owned ice cream company in the U.S.

Our local grocery carries probably six or seven different brands of ice cream, and Blue Bunny is by far the best.  They are a big product in this area.

Hi Everyone,

Well, our llustrious Chiefs are victorious again.  We went over to the kids' house and watched the game there.  DIL had homemade Italian beef sandwiches and Son made wings in his smoker.  All quite tasty.  The game was good especially at the end.  I have no use for the commercials.  The advertisers spend sooo much effort to be creative and for what?  Half the time you don't even know what they're trying to advertise and in recent years the ads have gotten increasingly darker.  Neither am I interested in the halftime show.  I would've been fine with a marching band.  Anyway, had a good time with the family, and I get to see my granddaughters again tomorrow.  SoapBox

Im not much of a Scotch drinker.  I've had Glenfiddich.  Very smooth.  We once bought a good friend who likes scotch an bottle of MacAllan.  Sorry, just didn't care for it.  So, you all can have my share.

On the other hand, Blue Bunny is good stuff.  I used to like Breyers Natural Vanilla, but these days, I like Blue Bunny.

Getting hungry, need to investigate a snack. Dinner

Less is more,...more or less!

I grew up in Texas with Blue Bell ice cream; then I worked in Brenham (home of Blue Bell). Really, really good ice cream.  But my daughter and my wife love Blue Bunny, and as Blue Bell is not available in Kansas, we buy Blue Bunny.  As a type two diabetic, I don't do much ice cream, and when I do, it is sugar free.  As I said before, the Blue Bunny sugar free vanilla tastes great.

As an aside, went to the doctor Friday for blood work.  They called this morning and said my A1c was where it needed to be.  That wasn't the case in July.  YEAH!

I haven't seriously watched a football game in 2 or 3 years.  I used to be a Patriots fan, back when I lived in Massachussetts, but they've fallen into the Pit of Despair and I doubt they'll even approach mediocrity while I'm alive.  I gave up on the Redskins because they were only marginally better, I don't care for the Eagles or Ravens, and everyone else is outside my viewing area so I can't watch them.

I haven't seriously watched a football game in 2 or 3 years.

I think I have only watched a handful of pro sports games during my entire adult life. There is something about watching players, who are being paid millions of dollars, not giving 110% all the time. My favourite sport to watch was highschool basketball. Those kids gave it their all!

We used to take the highschool team to the Raptors games in Toronto. The last time we went, we got to watch the Raptors saunter casually down the court with less then one minute left in the game. They were down by one point and they let the shot clock run out.Tongue Tied We were all disgusted! That was 20 years ago. Haven't been back since.

Cheers!!

homemade Italian beef sandwiches

That sounds good!  I haven't made those in a long time.  Still, homemade isn't quite as good as Al's #1.  Next time I make it to Chicago, I'll have to stop there.

I would've been fine with a marching band.

Used to have that.  Looking over wikipedia, it appears that all changed with Super Bowl XXV.

Good morning, everyone.  Since it's Mardi Gras, it's the one day of the year when you can drink beer for breakfast and no one thinks you're crazy.

One of the morning's highlights is to catch Pete Fountain's Half Fast Walking Club.

Rex Parade

It sounds strange, but if you ever go to Mardi Gras, something not to miss happens at midnight.  With Mardi Gras officially ending at midnight, the police horses line up at one end of Bourbon Street and slowly move down the street, clearing everyone out of the way.  Even if you've had too much to drink, don't get in the way -- they mean business.

My family and I really miss Mardi Gras.  My daughters grew up having a great time there.

One last photo, this was me with a group of friends.  We made these costumes using the the school's screen printer.

Have a great Fat Tuesday, everyone.

It's a beautiful day here on the edge of the Salish Sea.

I was hoofin' it through the forest this morning and a couple of dozen deer ran past the dog and me on both sides at warp speed. We heard the herd at the last second as they snuck up on us. That got a holy crap out of me, a guy that never swears.Laugh

Great pics Ed, keep'em coming. Also, love the Campbell soup outfits, John, that's looks like a lot of fun.

Speaking of high-stakes gambling and buying the squares on the Superbowl. I went to work one day and the boss said, "Here this arrived for you". It was a fat plain brown envelope. I threw it on the seat of my truck and got around to opening it later. It was full of cash and turned out to be from the U.S. Consul General. I had made a secure documents run to the Consulate weeks earlier and the Consul General invited me to join in and buy a couple of Super Bowl squares. I had won 4 of the 5 prizes. Three of the quarter scores and the final. $1200.00US Thank you very much. There was also a hilarious note from the Consul General that said I was Banned from future participation.Laugh

The Canucks are in Chicago tonight, hopefully, they are over their little slump after losing two in a row to Boston and Detroit and a poor performance against Washington just squeaking out a win. They are still firmly in first place in the league and Chicago should be a cakewalk. However, it is the bad teams that get you.Laugh

Just North of Vancouver

Just waiting on the cable guy. One of our boxes isn't earning its keep.

All the best to all.

Bear, that juicy chunk of meat is right up my alley. Looks like you brought enough for all of us.

Gidday, Batman, yeah there probably would have been enough if it was sliced thinly! It’s actually a throwback to my single man days. I would usually cook a large “Sunday Roast,” less shrinkage, which would then leave me (my flatmate (s)) enough cold meat for several meals. Nothing like coming home after a long day and having tea ready. While variety is good, cold meat and a salad…DinnerBig Smile

Anyhow, I had to see if there was a named “Chief” train that ran through or originated in Kansas. It would appear not but I found the following.

Santa Fe's train No. 111, eastbound, enroute from Fort Worth over Texas and Pacific rails crosses the Trinity River bridge. This train, headed by Engine No. 1388, a Pacific type 4-6-2 locomotive, is bringing "The Kansas Cityan" into Dallas.

Good morning all.   I spent the long weekend in hospital due to getting pneumonia on a lung.  Therefore I'll have a large coffee please, Flo  and I'll rest in the corner.

The 49s  own Leeds United soccer club here in the U.K..  Therefore I had to support them.  Obviously I couldn't cheer loud enough.

Last night Leeds United won 4-0 at Swansea   and moved to second in the table.

Good Morning Diners.  Chloe, I'll have coffee and a lemon Paczki just like in Ed's picture.

I was at the grocery store the other day and saw a big table full of Paczki boxes and thought I would grab a couple for the family.  The entire table was all a single kind of Paczki that's the same as a doughnut you can buy every single day.  I passed.

David, sorry to hear about your illness.  Guessing you are on the mend?  Hopefully 100% soon.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone.  For those with a significant other, I hope you remembered...

Today was day 13 of my ongoing radiation treatment. I brought several boxes of biscotti in for the nurses and techs that take care of my 7 am treatment every morning. Wow, you'd think I brought in bags of gold! Sometimes it is the little things that make a person's day brighter.

As I was leaving I spotted their snack cart and there was a cluster of staff gathered 'round chatting about which ones were their favorites. Smile

Hi Everyone,

Bear:  Actually, the ATSF ran the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles, and it went right through Kansas.  It started in Chicago and went in a straight shot to Kansas City stopping at KC's famed and historical Union Station. There was a shoot out there in the 1930's between the FBI and some gangsters.  Then the train goes west through Lawrence and at Topeka turns south and goes through Emporia, Newton, Hutchinson, and continues west through Dodge City, I think Pueblo, CO, (but I'm not absolutely sure about that one), and south through Raton Pass or it's modern day mainline equivalent. Oddly enough, ATSF's mainline does not actually go through Santa Fe, but about 20-25 miles south.  Then it goes through Gallup, New Mexico, Winslow, Arizona, don't forget Winona, Kingman, Barstow,... and it goes down through Cajon Pass, and finally to LA's Union Station.

So, that's a "chief" name train that goes through Kansas.

Incidently, for our friends and brothers who are on the other side of either pond, most of Kansas City is actually on the Missouri side of the Kansas-Missouri border, and doesn't have much of anything to do with the state of Kansas, but then Kansas history is a subject for another day.

Well, I gather some chiefs from Kansas won some sort of game where the half time event is of more importance than the actual game! (Still can’t get my head around the whole concep

Kind of makes you wonder what was coming behind the deer, doesn't it?

I was thinking that almost immediately. The dog was about 5 metres in front of me and heard them just before I did and hit the ground. I started looking back right away while pulling my bear spray mini out of my jacket. Didn't see or hear a thing. The only thing that would make them run like that would be a cougar, we get one of those once in a while. Today I took one of our big males and while out he started to growl like I had not heard him growl before. I didn't see a thing though.

David I hope you get over your pneumonia, I had pneumonia 25 years ago and it took weeks to get back to normal. Look after yourself.

My subwoofer has started acting up, so I guess I need to take it to Vancouver for a rebuild. I looked at the cost of a new one and a rebuild will be a lot cheaper. The new model of the same woofer weighs 115lbs, mine is 35 years old, not quite that heavy but a bear to move just the same. It goes down to 15HZ and on blue ray, you can feel Darth Vader coming before you can hear him.Laugh

My hard drive filled up on the computer that I use for surfing so I spent yesterday and today moving RR photos from it to a hosting sight. The computer is back to running at warp speed. I think there were over a thousand pics that I moved and sorted. Probably a drop in the bucket compared to Ed's collection. Ed, how many do you have on file? I sure enjoy your offerings.

I think I will flip on the idiot box for a while, with my wife's declining health I am having to pick up more of the slack around the house including looking after six Golden Retrievers, something I have never had to do.

All the best to all.

Anyhow, thanks Jim, for the lesson. As an old Pre WW2 engineer, I was privileged to work for and with, told me, “Young fella, if you don’t learn something new every day, then you’ve wasted a day.”

Good Morning Diners.  Janie, a white chocolate and caramel latte and a slice of coffee cake please.

Got a pleasant surprise yesterday.  My wife and I had a simple spaghetti meal planned for yesterday, but halfway through the day she texted me and suggested we do something else and then suggested steak!  I wasn't going to argue that! Dinner

I love that about a good sound system.  I had a friend in high school who had a pair of 18" subwoofers mounted free air against the back seat of his car that would drop that low.  He got ahold of a calibration CD that had frequencies down that low too.  Since humans can only hear down to 20Hz, it was the weirdest thing to see the subwoofers making his back seat move, but the only sound you could hear was the sound of the seats flexing.

Good morning, diners.

Ed, it sounds like your treatments are going OK.  Hope that continues.

David, same for you.  Hopefully you will not have any more problems.

Brent, same for your wife.  Hopefully she gets past this time in good health again.

Bear, my wife and I do very little in the way of streaming programs, but one we have both enjoyed is The Brokenwood Mysteries, filmed in your part of the world.  I will be honest and say that when I watch, I turn on the closed captioning so I can read some of what's said.  I've found that the New Zealand English is easier for me to understand than much of the UK's English.  I love seeing your countryside in that program.  I don't see many mountainous scenes, but the rural views in the show are nice.

This month is 'named' trains.  How about this 'named' streetcar line?  The Desire streetcar ran in New Orleans from Canal street down Bourbon St, then after several turns ended up on Desire, then back to Canal on Royal St.  This line was gone long before I showed up.

Strangely enough, the people who lived in the Quarter complained constantly about the streetcars, saying they were noisy and caused the houses to shake.  Then when the city decided to take the line out, those same citizens protested and said they wanted to keep the line.

There was talk of putting the line back in again, but it won't ever happen.

The only reason this streetcar line became well-known was the book and movie, "A Streetcar Named Desire".

David: Hope you have a speedy recovery, pneumonia is scary for those of us who are "seasoned" adults.

Ed:  Glad you were able to provide some cheer to your caregivers; hope your treatments are successful.

Brent:  Hope your wife gets better, soon.

My daughter flew to Nashville with her best friend, to watch the Stars vs. Predators game tonight.  Her friend's aunt lives in Nashville, and is a Preds season ticket holder.  Go Stars!
