You hit the nail on the head on that one J.R.  Although I never overindulged, a nice slab of prime rib on occasion I've always really enjoyed with a mix of sour cream and horseradish to dip.  I'll probably enjoy that more now as the occasion will be rare, ... no pun intended.

Another biggie for me as I'm adjusting to what I can and can't eat anymore is peanuts in the shell.  I ate those frequently in the evening not only as I liked them but deshelling them adds somewhat of a sport to the snack, the same as going out and deshelling king crab for dinner.  Now some nights I sit in front of the idiot tube and something's missing as I don't know what to do with my hands anymoreSad

I've always liked fish and it is so good for you so more of it will be a good thing.  They say that stuff is brain food and if it is, It certainly couldn't hurt to put that benefit to use in that departmentLaugh

I had forgotten about those terrible twos utill we went and visited our new Grandson Xavier the last time Wow

Good afternoon Diners.  A large coffee and a cream slice please, Zoe.

Brent.  A speedy recovery to your wife.

Mike.  Yes preservation of items  is not easy.I have been/am involved in a number of Preservation Societies.  At one point I helped a local Tram Preservation  Society 'get off the ground' so to speak.   We acquired a number of trams.  One from Germany was my favourite and began to preserve it.   It was when Dawn became ill that I had to stop working on the tram.

Although nobody has taken up looking after the tram the Society has grown to incorporate other forms of transport, civil and military aircraft  being the biggest'

One annoying regret to me was I wanted to buy a  nearly new 'Pier Tramway Carriage' from a Town Council.   It looked immaculate and ran perfect.   No restoration required.   I offered to buy it , but the Town Council sold it to a local scrap merchant for a price far less than I offered. Angry

Now I support certain projects I think worth while, by donation.

Good morning

Those props you made out of foam turned out really good Kevin.  I have this customer in Lakeville I did alot of work for over the years.  One of the jobs I tiled the whole first floor of their house.

Anyway, the lady next door I was talking to made these large foam props.  She was carving and painting them in her driveway.  It was a manger scene of the city of David she was making for a large Catholic Church that had an upcoming Christmas play in a few months.

She said she gets orders for these foam props and ships them all over the United States.  Her work was rather impressive.  The old stone walls looked like they were real.

Her husband came out and after talking to him for a bit, he said she makes twice as much money in a year than he does.  I've always liked making things for my layout out of foam, although I've never tried anything on a larger scale.

Well, playtime is over for me.  I have a list of some things to do in the building today.  I rather enjoy doing all the small jobs these days as it actually seems fun.  After a lifetime of the heavier remodeling and addition jobs, it's rather a nice adjustment.

I beg your humble pardon.

Perhaps I've been admiring Brents puppies too much and they rubbed off on me.

Ever notice when you leave the house for a short time to go to the store or something.  When you come back home the dogs get all wound up and excited jumping up and down carrying on like you've been gone for a week or twoLaugh

I wish I still had the luxury of someone missing me like that.  Actually that's one of the biggest things I miss about them.

Good Morning All,

A regular to go please Zoe. I think Kevin gets the award for most fun weekend. Your daughter is lucky you have those mad modeling skills - most realistic.

Brent - wishing your missus a speedy recovery. That's a load of pups for you to watch for sure.

TF - embrace the chicken. Chicken, turkey and fish are ok on my diet and the rest I've mostly cut out though I fall off the wagon on occasion. We took the DIL and grandson Sam to dinner Saturday and the prime rib was just too good to pass up. #1 son was at Barber Motorsports Park on the weekend so we thought we'd treat for dinner especially as Sam is fully into the terrible twos.

John - I have only traveled through Nebraska going somewhere else. Guess I should make a trip there some day.

Ed - I went to Colorado several times but never got to ride the D&S as we were working chase car on a tour each time. Someday..........

David - If the expense of restoring a steam engine is anything like it is in the U.S. it is no wonder many sit forlorn and unrestored. The Danbury Railway Museum has a small steam locomotive and the estimate to simply stabilize it was several hundred thousand. A full resto was bid at a million.

The excurion Ja Bear went on was the same outfit I got a cab ride from. These were taken from the slide plate between the engine and tender. The one of the fireman is the only time he was sitting still. As soon as we moved he was shovelling coal into the fire.

The Glenbrook facility was just outside where we stayed south of Auckland and we got to see it several times. Great facility and really hard working volunteers.

Time to pick up tools and get to it.  Ciao, J.R.

Brent, hope your wife feels better soon.  Thinking of you guys.

Charlie, that is an incredible amount you've gone through for those birds!

Not everything is 'rosy' regarding preservation of items.  Items meant for preservation can become too much.

When we were visiting Italy, one of our hosts said almost that exact same statement when we were talking about the historical riches of that country.  Seems there are some sort of Roman era ruins virtually everywhere.  In the Colosseum, they have sections of it blocked off with iron gates with bits upon bits stacked up inside.  Amazing old artifacts with no time, money, or people to do anything with them.

Kevin, looks like you had fun!  Two questions.  First, I didn't think foam board insulation was common in Florida.  Did you have to procure that on one of your trips?  Second, whats the deal with the little alligator your daughter is holding in that picture?!  I hope that's a band I'm seeing around it's snout.  That or it's dead! Laugh

Good Evening,

Brent, hope your wife is feeling better soon. Those pups are very cute but I know they require a lot of attention.

Bird o rama again here today. We have gone through 8 jars of grape jelly and 24 lbs. of oranges. I hope the orioles don't plan on staying.

Planting prep will start on Tues. We might get some done too.

Getting the 4th booster shot on Friday.

I cleaned up that loco I just purchased. I think it was sitting on a dislay shelf as there was some old dust on it. I used a moist Q tip to clean it. Not surprising as it is 20 years old.

Have a good evening,

CN Charlie

Good evening

Hi John,  The Golden Spike Tower in Nebraska looks like something cool to see and I liked the Streamliner poster.  Have only driven through Colorado and always wanted to spend more time there someday.  Thanks for the thank you.  A first time flyer hosting WPF takes alot out of a semi-retired guyLaugh...Wink

I see you found Brent.  Kevin has been in Orlando all weekend spending quality time with his Daughter attending the Mega Con convention.  He should be home tonight I think.

Brent, I sure do like those Pups.  They're getting quite cute & fluffyLaugh  It's not often a weathered-man uses a word like fluffy, I better fix that with one of thesePirate  It sounds like you have your hands full over there.

I'm sorry to hear about your wife not feeling well.  A great gal that looks like Meryl Streep shouldn't have to feel bad like that.  Judy and I will keep you two in our thoughts and best wishes.  I hope she feels better soon.

Speaking of gone for the weekend, where's my buddy Ed been hanging out?

Well, I'm trying to adjust to this new DT diet and make myself think the first part of this sounds good.  (strained sauce & chicken burger) meatball spaghetti with parmesan mozzarella garlic cheese bread for dinnerDinner......Gotta Go!

Good morning, everyone.  Donut day today.  My only complaint about donut day is that last week, the church ladies served some stale donuts.  I don't know what was going on.  I hope they're better today.

TF, thanks for your work on keeping the Weekend Photo Fun thread alive!  Maybe you and Judy can find some interesting things to do -- we are also very cold here.  I loved that episode of Home Improvement when Tim dropped the beam on the Nomad.  I always wondered if they wrecked an actual Nomad or if it was a camera trick.

Bear, great vacation videos and photos.  You certainly have the beautiful countryside to tour on the train.  If I remember, weren't the Lord of the Rings movies filmed there?

Ed, great memories with your father and family.  I wish I could have traveled like that when I was a kid.  I saw the countryside from the back seat of an old Plymouth, sitting between two brothers whose idea of travel was to smell up the car.

JR, it sounds like you will be busy for the next while.  That was a scary situation with your injured friend.  Times like that remind me to be thankful for life -- it can end so quickly and unexpectedly.

David, I know I've mentioned it before, but I'm impressed that England has preserved their railways and stations so well.  It certainly is interesting to see the past history kept in good shape.

Charlie, I'm sure you enjoy the plants.  I'm the opposite, I would enjoy the view of all the plants, but only if someone else planted them and took care of them.  My wife was excited yesterday -- we had three male Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks at the feeders yesterday.  I told her to take a picture, but she didn't.

Mike, I hope your daughter's graduation reception is enjoyable.  I enjoyed ours the most when the last guests left.  My daughters were normal kids -- their best part of graduation was opening the cards to see if any money was involved.

Lion, thanks for all the food.  I know about dogs, but I didn't know cats thought about food constantly.

Dave, you talked about your experience with skunky beers.  That's my impression of many craft beers and IPAs.  I just don't like them.  I'll stick with my bland name brand light beer.

It seems like Kevin must be busy at Home Depot and with home projects.  We also haven't heard from Brent in several days.  Hope everyone is doing well.

For everyone else not mentioned, I hope you have a great Sunday!

If you're on vacation traveling through the middle of the U.S., a great stop is at North Platte, Nebraska.  The view of the Union Pacific yards from the Golden Spike tower is amazing:

Good morning

Enjoyed all the Holiday Train photos to look at here.  That's a nice picture your Dad took chasing the train Ed, as I'm sure it holds fond memoriesSmile

It was good to hear the positive side to this new selective food grazing J.R. and especially the way you described itLaugh

Liked the picture of the old bridge and video of the new and old Viaduct Bear.  At first in my confusion I thought the new bridge was built over the old piers until I zoomed in and saw some of the rust on the uprights.  Without a good foundation, one doesn't have anything.  Something should be said for the quality of the old Mason's work and the test of time on the masonary products they used back in the day.  Also how well some of those old bridges were built.

Interesting, the tall pier uprights on the new bridge created curiosity on the construction, how they were stabilized until the top deck of the bridge held everything together as one structure.

The demolition of the old portal sure was quick, nice view of the train going by from in there.  Did they ever get the old tunnel restored?

Well, not really any plans for today but Judy's last day off.  Hopefully it warms up a bit so we can find something fun outside to do.

Enjoy your Sunday gentlemanWink

Gidday Chloe, you must be getting totally sick and tired of polishing the glasses by now. Could I have one of the Lions BLTs, please. Don’t worry if it contains the seeds and nuts!!!Whistling

Gidday JR, I see you’ve been keeping head down and posterior up, but hope you’re managing to get some R & R. We’re not as young as we think we are, at least that’s what I’m finding out!!!

"That excursion looked lke fun Ja Bear. I was impressed by how smooth the trackage is in NZed compared to here"

It was over 40 years ago since I rode the Sydney commuter trains, so I don’t have any basis for comparison.

The excursion train was run by the Glenbrook Vintage Railway who I know you are familiar with. Like a lot of tourism related businesses, they were hit hard by the “Spicey Cough” but have managed to keep their heads above water, by I suspect some clever local marketing, and the dedication and hard work of their willing volunteers.

Their National Rail Network Certified Heritage Passenger Fleet currently consisting of 8 eight cars contains a mixture of wood panelled carriages, first built between 1909 and 1924, and steel panelled carriages, built 1939-40, and even though they are “Up to date” and maintained to a high standard, because of the wood panelled carriages, even though they have steel underframes, are limited, by the “Powers That Be”, to 45 m p h.
As a former “ton up boy” I’d have found that speed limit ludicrous once, but must admit that I enjoy enjoyed the trip and the scenery at the more relaxed pace.

For the Bridge Guy.
The old Hapuawhenua Viaduct, built in 1908, taken from the new Hapuawhenua Viaduct, built 1987. We had hoped to walk down the Old Coach Road walk/cycleway to the viaducts, but the weather, next day was rather inclement!!

Here’s a pretty good video which shows both, including some older footage of the old viaduct in use.

Good afternoon.  It's actually cool here.  Tonight we will be down to 38°F.  West of us about 50 miles there's a freeze warning.

Great vacation photos.  Some of you have some wonderful train memories.  Keep sharing photos!

This is Hastings, Nebraska, in 1989.  Seven hours late.  We had just gotten off into 35°F below zero.  This was not a pleasant trip.  The toilets had frozen somewhere in Iowa, and the entire train smelled like you can imagine.  My wife and kids were not impressed with train travel.

Have a good Saturday.
