Racing steam locomotives? Check this out:
It's a shame lots of news outlets were shooting on u-matic video back then. This loses something in the transfer but it sure is neat. The sounds were dubbed, otherwise all you would hear is chopper rotors.
This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime events that would have been a must-see!
Looks like I hit the Top O' the Page again!

BigDaddyAnd you won't have certain immunity until the 17th.
Today was not the day I was scheduled for the shot.
They sent us a text and said we could come today if we wanted to.
We went the the State run vaccination site at the old airport terminal.
THERE WAS NO ONE THERE! One of the workers told us they are plagued with cancellations and no-shows. From the time we parked the car until the needle was in my arm was less than 5 minutes.
I am not going to mention the politics behind this insanity, but what is happening down here is completely beyond comprehension.
Anyway... We have been living like hermits for more than a year, we never go out without a mask, and only for neccessities. We have missed out on an entire year of family gatherings.
And NO ONE in charge in the state of Florida is taking this the least bit seriously.
I am embarassed.

Hi Ed,
That was a neat video. I'm not sure if the race was exactly fair though. The Union Pacific loco had two diesel helpers whereas the Southern Pacific was on its own. However, the Union Pacific train seemed to be much longer so perhaps that equalized things a bit.
I noted that the Southern Pacific loco's engineer didn't seem to have any qualms about using a lot of fuel. The black smoke was heavy and almost continuous for much of the trip.
I found it very interesting that the Southern Pacific crew were able to detect a bearing problem and be able to fix it apparently without outside assistance. They must really know their locomotive well.
Thanks,
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
SeeYou190And NO ONE in charge in the state of Florida is taking this the least bit seriously.
They are all trying to figure out how to plug the little hole in the dike up in Piney Point
Glad you enjoyed the video, Dave. I did too.
Hello Railfans!
Heres your second shot!!!
Ed) Thank ya Ed, that brown truck looks mighty familiar!
on the 'thumb in dike' statement. Just think of all the things that are gonna be stuck in the canal after this! The Ever-Given keeps on giving!
Critter Dave) I noticed that too about 4449's dirty stack. Shame shame shame Mr Fireman! Phoebe Snow would not be happy!
Also, there was a thread not long ago with the title.... something like.... "Things you wont see on my layout...".
I think i can honestly add to that post - 'musical glasses along my right of way'.
And i had just remarked to TF.... Ive seen everything now.
Charlie) Thanks for the info! I guess there wasnt need to ask about the MR decoders if they arent made anymore. But i wouldnt have known that less you said so.
Yall folks have a great evening!
Clear Ahead!

He must have been sanding the flues. The 4449 is oil fired. I seem to recall somewhere that some grades of oil are sootier than others. I think they like #5. Normally bunker C is like pitch. If they put diesel in there the flues may have begun to clog up?
The engines had been sitting idle and that's when soot begins to build up. When they get out to the main line and up to speed theres better draft and less "city" congestion so that's the time to sand the flues.
Flues that begin to clog will pack with sand (not enough draft to pull the sand through) and make a real mess so it has to be done right or they will be opening the front end to rod-out the flues. A real bummer when there's five hundred people waiting to ride behind a steam loco.
Glad you like the photos, Bear! I enjoy posting ones that are worthy of close inspection Lots going on in that shop one year after Pearl.
I did find Ken's phone number. I'll give a call tonight.

A few steam engines including a North British locomtive. Hope you like.
Good morning, diners. It's a lightning and thunder show outside right now.
Dave, that video of the train and the glasses is amazing. I had to wonder how long it took to set up, and how they kept the right amount of water in the glasses. If they took a long time to set it up, it seems the evaporation would have caused some sour notes. I also wondered how many glasses were knocked over while they perfected things. Thanks!
Out of state company coming today for a while. No layout time.
They had a huge crowd of kids at the Easter egg drop. Everybody wanted to see what 10,000 eggs dropped from a helicopter looked like. I didn't hear whether they found all the eggs.
Have a good day, everyone.

You certainly dig out some interesting photos, Ed, and being able to enlarge them, does show some interesting features, worthy of at least two cups of coffee search time. And shortbread as well!!! Thanks.
I too have spent some good time examining the photos Ed posts.
Thanks Ed.
Howdy.
i was right. Today is very noisy here. Old roof is coming off right now.

Good Morning,
Another warm, sunny day here so I will finish getting the pond waterfall going. The migrant birds have started coming and they really use the pond. It yas a small bird sized beach they use for bathing and they like to use the shell shaped rock the water falls from too.
Dave, do you run any TH&B locos? I saw a few on the bay for a good price. One was a Hudson. I had to slap my hand and remind myself of the $500 bill to cut the storm damage to our tree last week. I lke the colours of their diesels.
Ed, when CP rebuilt Hudson 2816 they converted it to burn diesel oil. There is very little smoke. One issue they had is that it burns hotter than heavier oil. Anyway it is strange for a steam engine to smell exactly like a diesel especially as I remember how coal smelled.
I enjoyed the videos with my morning coffee.
Kevin, congrats on getting the shot. My wife is to get hers on the 25th and she is 64. We are behind here due to supply issues. Plenty was ordered but none is made here. All of ours comes from Europe .
More coffee is required, it won't be warm enough until 2 pm to do the pond.

Virtually everyone 50-years-old and older in my state has now been vaccinated if they want it.
This week, it is open to everyone 18-years-old and above. You still make reservations to get it and get put on a list, but it is going quickly here.
CNCharlieKevin, congrats on getting the shot. My wife is to get hers on the 25th and she is 64. We are behind here due to supply issues.
We have a glut of vaccine here in Florida. Leadership actually declared that supply is greater than demand.
No surprise there, since our leadership told everyone there is no real reason to get the vaccine. We did not get ample supply, they just got rid of the demand.
Howdy, everybody.

John ..... We are on a bay which is part of Lake Barkley. It is a man-made lake over 50 miles long which is the Cumberland River with a big dam. The other large man-made lake is Kenticky Lake made with a dam on the Tennessee River. Together, they form Land Between the Lakes, a National Recreation Park.
As of noon today, this was our roof project:
Workers are replacing water damaged wood. We did not know how bad it was.

Hi CN Charlie,
Thanks for watching out for me! I have two TH&B diesels, one switcher and one GP 7 (I think). I saw the TH&B locos on eBay but I had just spent $230.00 on the three TH&B slab sided hoppers so I held off. A couple of the listings are still active so I may give in yet.
The really nice thing about the person who is listing these, and from whom I bought the hoppers, is that he only charges the actual postal fee. That makes the shipping cost much easier to accept, especially since he is only about 30 miles away. I was looking at another TH&B listing from the US and the seller wanted $70.00 USD to ship to Canada. That is gouging at its best!
Hi David,
That video about Hercules the bear was really interesting! It is a bit disturbing that he was kept captive, but obviously he was treated well and had lots of stimulation.
I love bears! I have seen many, many black bears around our cottage on the north shore of Georgian Bay. Several were within a few feet of us but we were inside the cottage and they were outside. One morning I bumped one on the nose with the screen door as I was headed for the outhouse. My mother had a young bear sit down beside her on the front porch.
Dianne and I got to see wild grizzlys up close in BC a couple of years ago. Last fall we saw polar bears at a sanctuary in Cochrane, Ontario.
hon30critterI was looking at another TH&B listing from the US and the seller wanted $70.00 USD to ship to Canada.
That's what I paid to ship my Hudson to Markham, Ont. from NE Ohio to Rapido for repair.
Later I send two RS-11s back for repair. That was $85.00. I don't think it is the seller doing the gouging.
On a dollar-per-mile basis your RDC was a bargain!

I guess it is a weight issue because the shipping cost for a boxcar from the US is about 30% of that. If shipping a locomotive from the US to Canada has actually become that expensive then that is going to save me a whole lot of money! I won't be buying any locomotives from the US in the future. I really should be satisfied with what I have and concentrate on getting them all equipped with LokSounds. Half my fleet is still DC.
Cheers!!
Heartland Division CB&QAs of noon today, this was our roof project:
I sure don't envy you Garry. When we had our roof replaced, about a year after we bought this house, over a dozen sheets of plywood had to be replaced because of water damage. This was on a house only eleven years old!
The original sheathing was held in by staples. The roofer put screws in all of the sheets before the felt went on. They also installed hurricane straps on the trusses.
That roof lasted less than two years, then Hurricane Charley took it apart, but all the sheathing stayed in place. I guess the extras were money well spent.
My current roof is rated for 170 MPH category 5 winds, and is already 16 years old. It has survived four category 3 storms with no damage.
Here is another video of Scottish steam in action:

Howdy ....
Kevin .... It sounds like your current roof is very top quality. You mentioned replacing plywood, and that is what was needed here for this project. About a dozen 4x8 sheets were used yesterday. Too much weather damage. We are learning how poorly the original roof was installed.
All day yesterday, we had 7 Mexicans working on the roof. They were here at 7:00 this morning to begin the noises. In the background, they have Mexican music playing loudly, and actaully I don't mind that kind of music.
Today we get new shingles and new gutters. All of those guys work hard, and seem to know what they are doing.
Bear ..... LOL .... I kant spel gud also . My tiping is wurss
John York 1 .... Enjoy the family visits.

Meanwhile, in the train room, I replace some tiles in the drop ceiling yesterday.
Everybody ..... Keep on posting the videos. I'll catch up when I can.
