Thanks for the great videos of Scotland railways, David!

I found a photo of the Edinburgh Waverley trackwork that can be blown up pretty big to study details. What an amazing and complex operation.

We may hit 60° today! Break out the sun screen!

I hope everyone is getting along well.

No word from Ken? I thought I had his phone number saved but apparently I can not find it Confused

How did I get shuffeled to the TOP of the page?

Well, the Haggis was kind of hit-or-miss (mostly miss) how about some leftover Easter ham with raisin glaze, scalloped potatoes, Brussels sprouts and lemon meringue pie?

Hello Railfans!

Top of the morning to yas! Pretty nice day outside.... blaringly sunny but no jacket required (just earplugs).

Todays list of things to do says nadda. Got the grass cut yesterday, weed eating a couple days before. Maybe a load of laundry might crop up should i walk by the machine.

Truely, days like this i really envy you lot that have layouts. I have the hankering to lash up about 3 GP7s, hitch'em up to about 50 cars, and go find a grade to tackle. Thats if i couldnt come up with a Kanawha and 100 cars of WVs finest diamonds to run through a mountainous scene.

I guess thats what ya get when you have a video of '765 on the New River Train' as a mid night snack just before bed. Still, today is a good day to have a hand on throttle, and eyes on the track ahead.

BTW, Happy Easter for those who observe the holiday. And NO, im not talking to any bankers we may have amongst us.

Mostly just stopping by to say howdy... Howdy! Although....

Ed) That was a great shot (negative 3147) of trackwork. Can only imagine the stress level at rush hour for the interlocking crew that operates it, the track workers who maintain it.... or better yet - the modeller who models it! Laugh

See yall round the beanery!

Douglas,  I know that several times you have mentioned that you don't have a layout.

I don't remember reading what happened.  Did you have a layout and got rid of it?  Are you planning a move and waiting until you have a place to put the trains?

None of my business, but since you consider morning 4:00 p.m., I  thought I'd ask.  My wife also thinks morning occurs when I'm midway through happy hour.

LaughLaugh That gave me a good chuckle.

John) Yes 4pm in yalls evening (regular space-time) is my morning time (some unknown dimension). Im one of those night timers. Ive worked 3rd shift most my life and before that i was pretty much just born to it. Its always seemed natural to be up at night, sleep at day. Either that, or i was born on the wrong side of the planet.

So when i begin by 'morning folks', it really is 'my' morning. Even if you're midway through happy hour. Think about it though, what a great time to wake up - Happy hour! You get to put beer in your Wheaties and no one cares Laugh

(I read once where the members of AC/DC after a night of heavy drinking and passing out.... the next day when everyone was already up, Bon Scot would just lean back up from where he crashed - drink still in hand - and would say.... 'Now where were we?'. LaughLaugh   I find following this mentallity keeps me feeling youthfull. Yeah, im up all night!)

Layout - About 6 yrs ago an elderly family member had a serious accident. Enough so i had to pretty much pack a bag and uproot myself to this forsaken place in order to take care of things... and them. Been stuck here ever since living out of that suitcase. But thats what you do for family!

The place im in isnt mine, though it may be one day. Until then, it would be very improper to do something like have a layout. Until the day i either inherit this place or am freed of the responsibilites i have here and move on back to my own life, i will have to just enjoy seeing you folks post pics of yalls layouts. that and what MR provides thru their coverage of the hobby. (so keep the good stuff coming guys!)

At most, because my interest in the hobby is well known in the family, a workbench and test track are not frowned on at all. They know im addicted, so those items are expected. Collecting just means more storage boxes. No problem there.

I dont know about yall but im the only Railfan in my family. So i get teased alot about it. Lovingly of course. They know Railfans are good people, if not misguided Laugh

I usually dont mention any of this because i know alot of you have simliar problems of your own. Some very serious. I try my best to not be a downer. Im sure my success rate on that isnt a 100% figure, but i try.

Right now John im mostly a collector. waiting for that day when a nice room avails itself. Its been a long time since ive done a layout. Im over due. And i dont mind at all you asking. How else would you get to know?

Top of the morning to ya and..... CHEERS! Beer

Hello everyone. I am enjoying a nice and quiet Easter evening.

Nothing to report. I had Chinese food for dinner from my favorite take-out place, and that was excellent.

I hope all are well and ready for a brand new week.

Here are a few guys putting a bit of a twist on pipe music:

Dianne and I saw them a few years ago at the Fergus, Ontario Tatoo. They put on quite a show!

Here is a more traditional Pipe and Drum performance. The 'bag rock' bands were interesting, but the real stuff stirs my heart!

This is a beautiful rendition of one of the most loved pieces of pipe music, and it is accompanied by some incredible views of Scotland.

Good morning all.   Snow has fallen,  with more to follow.

Tea and Toasted Hot Cross Buns  this morning.

John.  If we really knew what went in foods I think we would go hungry.  I am yet to be told what benefits we get by putting quicklime in foods.   It is in a lot of our foods  (thanks to a directive from Europe.)

As others have posted bagpipe music I can play other types of music.   (I do like the sound of bagpipes.   I had them being played at our wedding. Yeah )

A little information.  When the town of Berwick on Tweed belonged to Scotland it was called South Berwick.   The English renamed it Berwick on Tweed.

Whilst you are having your coffee  here is a film of North Berwick & Bass Rock from the air.

A short film of Leith Central Station.

The film 'Sunshine on Leith'  was filmed all around Leith.    A song from the film.

Later we shall take a tour on 'Britannia'   the forme r Royal Yacht  that is berthed in Leith.

The girls in the Diner have asked to see the Royal Yacht Britannia,  Kelpies in Falkirk and the Falkirk Wheel.   Therefore they have left things ready in the Diner for everyone.

We shall be back in time for dinner.

The Kelpies are 30-metre high horse-head sculptures, standing next to the Forth and Clyde Canal near Falkirk, Scotland. The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in Scotland, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The lift opened in 2002. The Antonine Wall was a turf fortification on stone foundations, built by the Romans between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde

Good morning, everyone.  Bacon, eggs, and coffee this morning, Flo.

A little more normalcy -- there will be a Free-Mo event this weekend for both HO and N Scale, about 50 miles from me.  What's kind of amazing is that this will be in a small town of 750 people, about 10 miles off the highway.

Of course, out here I can drive 50 miles in less time than some people in large cities can drive to work.

Thanks for the info, Douglas.  That reminded me -- I attend a men's group that meets at 6:00 a.m. Friday mornings.  In my small town, the only place open for breakfast is a small bar and grill, so we met there.

A local factory's night shift gets off at 6:00 a.m., so some of those workers show up at this bar for their after-work happy hour.   There's a bunch of guys at 6:15 a.m. drinking beer after work in the same room with a bunch of guys having devotions and breakfast.  We all have a good time.

I'm continuing to enjoy the videos, although I've never put together rock music and bagpipes.

I think I ruined one of my Arduino nanos yesterday.  I caused a short, and now the nano doesn't work.  It's only $3.00, but it means a lot of resoldering new connections.  The problem was me trying to save 50¢ using an old computer's barrel jack and screwy wire rigging.

Here's a picture of one of our favorite places -- Oak Alley in Louisiana.  I think the place looks about the same, although I took this picture in 1978.

Hope everyone has a good healthy day today.

Good morning

I would suspect everyone had a great Easter as we did.

Thanks for posting all the great videos everyone.  Lots of bagpipe music and I love itStick out tongue

Garry stated he enjoyed all the videos, especially the ones with steam locomotives pulling passenger cars.

Well here's one for you Garry!

The Flying Scotsman is a very large locomotive but certainly puts the size of the Fourth Bridge that Ed posted earlier into perspective.  That bridge certainly makes me wish I had a BIGGER layout! Whistling

And here's a fun clip for everyone to enjoy.

And the Winner IS! Laugh

There's several videos out there featuring the Forth Bridge but I didn't think they were all that well presented.

This one seems decent:

Like a locomotive, bridges can also be functional AND beautiful to behold.

Good Afternoon,

Another warm day here. The forecast shower didn't happen. We are now likely to be in a drought this summer if current trends persist.

I didn't put the pump in the pond. There is always tomorrow.

I ran the RS3 yesterday to give steam a rest. It is an Athearn version that runs well and has CN details for long hood forward. I picked it up a few years ago from Kleins. They 'found' them doing a warehouse check as they had been out of prooduction for a few years. It doesn't have sound but that will change soon. I ordered a sound decoder off ebay. It is a MRC board made for this model. I know about MRC's reputation but it is the only one made for this model with sound and I had one in a CP version of this engine I sold 5 years ago and it worked just fine. Besides it was only $35 which is less than half what this board sold for 10 years ago.

To get an idea how early our spring is this year, my neighbour raked his lawn yesterday but the first yard waste pickup day is April 26.

Ed, do you have Ken's address? Could you do a number search for his phone?

Hello Railfans!

Top of the day to yas! finally it looks like the other half of the year has arrived. Pretty overly bright outside but man is it nice tempwise.

TF) Now i can say ive seen everything. Laugh Steam locos drag racing!!!

Charlie) I dont do DCC, but im a fan of MRC power packs. Whats the rep on the decoders - is it a lemon? I have a few "DCC ready" locos that if i was to visit a layout with DCC... I may be buying a few decoders some day. Be nice to know a few basics now i guess. Whos good, whos bad - that sorta thing.

John York) In my college years i worked for U.P.S., - third shift. We were the guys you prolly saw drinking beer at the restaurant early in the morning after we got all the silver trucks unloaded into the brown ones. Laugh

Back then 'Bob's Big Boy' restaurants still existed. Had a great breakfast bar!!! Obviously that was a BYOB place Whistling.

Kevin) hmmm, a mowhawk? cant wait to see how TF tops that! Laugh (-D]

In general) I finally found two stepper motors (a brushless DC motor used to operate cnc type machines) with the right specs to replace the ones i need for my printer. While these things are a dime a dozen out there, finding matching specs wasnt easy. These were the only two i could find.

Hopefully, in about a week or so, ill be back in the manufacturing of models business. My workbench and i cannot wait! I also found some individual boxes from U-Line to keep them in. Kinda pricey though, and werent easy to find either.

Athearn empty BB boxs pop up now and then on the "bay", but OUCH they get pricey for empty boxes. Ever check out the brass model boxs? OOOWEEE them are some spensive lil items!

Yall have a great evening!

Kevin has been a punk-rocker all the way back to 1982.

For what it is worth... punk rock shows are nothing like what you see in movies or TV, unless a bunch of idiots who think life is like TV and movies show up.

It is just a whole lot of fun.

Douglas, I wouldn't recomend MRC decoders. Their quality is often spotty as is performance but in this case they were the only sound decoder made for this engine plus I had one and it was fine. We are talking about a loco that came out over 10 years ago. Besides I don't think MRC are in the decoder business anymore.

My nephew's wife drives a Package Car Cool

I'll do some digging tonight to see if I can find Ken's phone number.

Dee Ann has been rehabbing her parent's old house. today I busted up a big, brick hearth for a wood stove that took up about 25% of the living room. Sore arms and back for the rest of the night!

Still trying to figure out the Digitrax DS64 control board that will automate routes through my yard. Picking up bits and bytes about it. So far so good. I like to try to learn new things. I never thought I'd be using DCC control for turnouts but after watching some Larry Puckett videos the bug hit.

Rain will be passing through most of the week so no Deere, yes to trains!

Evening diners

More video appreciation from this end!  I really enjoyed the video on the construction and history of the Forth Bridge EdYes  The older I get the more I appreciate history, especially when it's from the land of my roots.  I had read somewhere the more modern suspension bridges were built with air circulation and dehumidification running constantly through the suspension tubing to prevent corrosion.

I thought that Steamer race was a kick too Douglas.  My oldest daughter sent that to me not long ago and I laughed my butt offLaugh

I only wish I could get into my messaging here as I've been unsuccessful for six months.  I tried and tried again tonight.  It wasn't often I chatted and wasn't good at deleting my conversations.  I had called Ken a couple of years ago giving him advice about his roof.  If I could only access my messages I know I could find his phone number.  Something's missing around here without him dropping in every evening talking about his day.  It would be nice to know if he's alright.

Have a great evening everyone

And you won't have certain immunity until the 17th.

A friend gave me an antibody test and I had antibodies from my vaccine on Friday and saw my mother for the first time since October on Saturday.  The nursing home was only interested in my temperature and if I had been out of state.

She has deteriorated mentally quite a bit.  She did not recognize me or my son with masks on.  Is it a nice day out?  What do you hear from your sons? What do you do all day? was all she could say.  Rinse and repeat.  Today they shut down visitation because vaccination of the staff is not required and more staff members turned positive.

I got to see both my sons and my grandchildren.  We celebrated with take out Mexican food and Margaritas.

Easter was weird.  I suppose my parents had an Easter egg hunt for me, but I don't remember any.  My son's Egg hunt started in the house, with egg with clues to other eggs with candy and more clues.  It then went outside, where my 3 grandchildren were joined by 2 next door neighbor kids.  There were 30 or 40 eggs in the front and back yard.  Then we adjourned to a wooded area a block away.  There were another 60-80 eggs some 8" long, stuffed with toys, stickers, candy and tiny sugar drinks.  I doubt my grandchildren know anything about Easter other than the Easter bunny.

Same here on both counts Ed.  You've been busting brick, I've been busting wood.  Although brick sounds like a tougher job I'll be feeling it tomorrow.

I was tearing up rotten boards and replacing them on the sun deck today.  There's not a lot of work to do around the complex in the winter time so I'm a bit out of shape here.

I was blown out of the water at the lumberyard today.  They still say there is a cedar shortage and 10) 2x4x10's where $269Tongue TiedIndifferent  If it was for my own personal use, I certainly would not pay that.

I'm sitting out on the porch with thunder and lightning right now as the storms are moving in tonight.  It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow and Wednesday, then off and on for the rest of the weekBig Smile

You and me both Kevin. I've never seen Dropkick Murpys but I know a lot of fans of their shows. I'd like to see them live sometime when they play locally. My city has an alright music scene, but being close to Philly I've seen some good acts. One of my all time favorite shows was an Offspring Summer Nationals show at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia summer 2014. I took off early from work to catch the train so I could be there in time for that show. Also helped that I had a friend who lived fairly close to the venue.

On the MR front, about two months ago I bought a 144-pack of Sergent couplers and finally got the package a few days ago. The diecasting equipment had a malfunction so it took them a while to fill the orders until the equipment got repaired. I spent over an hour I think, arranging the tiny pieces on a piece of cardboard so I could paint them with Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer per their directions for painting. There are three parts that are painted so 432 tiny parts! I assembled about a dozen and had to remove paint from some pieces. Plus, in mounting the couplers on to Rapido USRA boxcars I had to ream out the mounting holes on the couplers. A 9/64" drill bit would do the trick minus that the drill was to power and I managed to break a pair of couplers. Instead I mounted I think a #43 bit, which is much smaller than a 9/64" one, into my rotary tool and just reamed it out a bit going around the inside of the hole. I liked that method much more. Sergent used to have a reamer but they discontinued it so I'll look at the alternatives they suggest.

My dad and I put in a new dishwasher into the kitchen as the previous one only lasted maybe two years, so hopefully this one will last a good bit longer.
