Dee Ann has been rehabbing her parent's old house. today I busted up a big, brick hearth for a wood stove that took up about 25% of the living room. Sore arms and back for the rest of the night!
Still trying to figure out the Digitrax DS64 control board that will automate routes through my yard. Picking up bits and bytes about it. So far so good. I like to try to learn new things. I never thought I'd be using DCC control for turnouts but after watching some Larry Puckett videos the bug hit.
Rain will be passing through most of the week so no Deere, yes to trains!

Douglas, I wouldn't recomend MRC decoders. Their quality is often spotty as is performance but in this case they were the only sound decoder made for this engine plus I had one and it was fine. We are talking about a loco that came out over 10 years ago. Besides I don't think MRC are in the decoder business anymore.

Charlie) I dont do DCC, but im a fan of MRC power packs. Whats the rep on the decoders - is it a lemon? I have a few "DCC ready" locos that if i was to visit a layout with DCC... I may be buying a few decoders some day. Be nice to know a few basics now i guess. Whos good, whos bad - that sorta thing.
John York) In my college years i worked for U.P.S., - third shift. We were the guys you prolly saw drinking beer at the restaurant early in the morning after we got all the silver trucks unloaded into the brown ones.
Back then 'Bob's Big Boy' restaurants still existed. Had a great breakfast bar!!! Obviously that was a BYOB place .

In general) I finally found two stepper motors (a brushless DC motor used to operate cnc type machines) with the right specs to replace the ones i need for my printer. While these things are a dime a dozen out there, finding matching specs wasnt easy. These were the only two i could find.
Hopefully, in about a week or so, ill be back in the manufacturing of models business. My workbench and i cannot wait! I also found some individual boxes from U-Line to keep them in. Kinda pricey though, and werent easy to find either.
Athearn empty BB boxs pop up now and then on the "bay", but OUCH they get pricey for empty boxes. Ever check out the brass model boxs? OOOWEEE them are some spensive lil items!

Another warm day here. The forecast shower didn't happen. We are now likely to be in a drought this summer if current trends persist.
I didn't put the pump in the pond. There is always tomorrow.
I ran the RS3 yesterday to give steam a rest. It is an Athearn version that runs well and has CN details for long hood forward. I picked it up a few years ago from Kleins. They 'found' them doing a warehouse check as they had been out of prooduction for a few years. It doesn't have sound but that will change soon. I ordered a sound decoder off ebay. It is a MRC board made for this model. I know about MRC's reputation but it is the only one made for this model with sound and I had one in a CP version of this engine I sold 5 years ago and it worked just fine. Besides it was only $35 which is less than half what this board sold for 10 years ago.
To get an idea how early our spring is this year, my neighbour raked his lawn yesterday but the first yard waste pickup day is April 26.
Ed, do you have Ken's address? Could you do a number search for his phone?

The Flying Scotsman is a very large locomotive but certainly puts the size of the Fourth Bridge that Ed posted earlier into perspective. That bridge certainly makes me wish I had a BIGGER layout!

Good morning, everyone. Bacon, eggs, and coffee this morning, Flo.
A little more normalcy -- there will be a Free-Mo event this weekend for both HO and N Scale, about 50 miles from me. What's kind of amazing is that this will be in a small town of 750 people, about 10 miles off the highway.
Of course, out here I can drive 50 miles in less time than some people in large cities can drive to work.
Thanks for the info, Douglas. That reminded me -- I attend a men's group that meets at 6:00 a.m. Friday mornings. In my small town, the only place open for breakfast is a small bar and grill, so we met there.
A local factory's night shift gets off at 6:00 a.m., so some of those workers show up at this bar for their after-work happy hour. There's a bunch of guys at 6:15 a.m. drinking beer after work in the same room with a bunch of guys having devotions and breakfast. We all have a good time.
I'm continuing to enjoy the videos, although I've never put together rock music and bagpipes.
I think I ruined one of my Arduino nanos yesterday. I caused a short, and now the nano doesn't work. It's only $3.00, but it means a lot of resoldering new connections. The problem was me trying to save 50¢ using an old computer's barrel jack and screwy wire rigging.

The Kelpies are 30-metre high horse-head sculptures, standing next to the Forth and Clyde Canal near Falkirk, Scotland. The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in Scotland, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The lift opened in 2002. The Antonine Wall was a turf fortification on stone foundations, built by the Romans between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde

A little information. When the town of Berwick on Tweed belonged to Scotland it was called South Berwick. The English renamed it Berwick on Tweed.

John) Yes 4pm in yalls evening (regular space-time) is my morning time (some unknown dimension). Im one of those night timers. Ive worked 3rd shift most my life and before that i was pretty much just born to it. Its always seemed natural to be up at night, sleep at day. Either that, or i was born on the wrong side of the planet.
So when i begin by 'morning folks', it really is 'my' morning. Even if you're midway through happy hour. Think about it though, what a great time to wake up - Happy hour! You get to put beer in your Wheaties and no one cares
(I read once where the members of AC/DC after a night of heavy drinking and passing out.... the next day when everyone was already up, Bon Scot would just lean back up from where he crashed - drink still in hand - and would say.... 'Now where were we?'. I find following this mentallity keeps me feeling youthfull. Yeah, im up all night!)
Layout - About 6 yrs ago an elderly family member had a serious accident. Enough so i had to pretty much pack a bag and uproot myself to this forsaken place in order to take care of things... and them. Been stuck here ever since living out of that suitcase. But thats what you do for family!
The place im in isnt mine, though it may be one day. Until then, it would be very improper to do something like have a layout. Until the day i either inherit this place or am freed of the responsibilites i have here and move on back to my own life, i will have to just enjoy seeing you folks post pics of yalls layouts. that and what MR provides thru their coverage of the hobby. (so keep the good stuff coming guys!)
At most, because my interest in the hobby is well known in the family, a workbench and test track are not frowned on at all. They know im addicted, so those items are expected. Collecting just means more storage boxes. No problem there.
I dont know about yall but im the only Railfan in my family. So i get teased alot about it. Lovingly of course. They know Railfans are good people, if not misguided .
I usually dont mention any of this because i know alot of you have simliar problems of your own. Some very serious. I try my best to not be a downer. Im sure my success rate on that isnt a 100% figure, but i try.
Right now John im mostly a collector. waiting for that day when a nice room avails itself. Its been a long time since ive done a layout. Im over due. And i dont mind at all you asking. How else would you get to know?

Todays list of things to do says nadda. Got the grass cut yesterday, weed eating a couple days before. Maybe a load of laundry might crop up should i walk by the machine.
Truely, days like this i really envy you lot that have layouts. I have the hankering to lash up about 3 GP7s, hitch'em up to about 50 cars, and go find a grade to tackle. Thats if i couldnt come up with a Kanawha and 100 cars of WVs finest diamonds to run through a mountainous scene.
I guess thats what ya get when you have a video of '765 on the New River Train' as a mid night snack just before bed. Still, today is a good day to have a hand on throttle, and eyes on the track ahead.
BTW, Happy Easter for those who observe the holiday. And NO, im not talking to any bankers we may have amongst us.

Ed) That was a great shot (negative 3147) of trackwork. Can only imagine the stress level at rush hour for the interlocking crew that operates it, the track workers who maintain it.... or better yet - the modeller who models it!

John. The closure of The Waverley Line was a great travesty. The number of towns that lost their railway was huge. Fortunately after 50 years the error is being righted. Slowly, but surely.

As of right now, all the pink is gone! It is not fully painted yet, but the primer is on everywhere. The painters said they should be done on Wednesday, then I get to start putting up the stone ledgers.

Normally, we would be in Texas visiting kids, but since we saw them just last week, we're home. We have some relatives from Arizona coming the next several days, so I imagine today will be another cleaning day.
David, it seems like England embraces railroad preservation better than anywhere else in the world. You have some great opportunities to experience old rail cars and stations that we don't in North America.
Yesterday, a local business hired a helicopter to drop 10,000 plastic and candy Easter eggs onto a local farm, and then the town's kids were set loose. I wanted to help find them, but for some reason they said I was too old. Maybe it's the bald head. I don't think anyone counted how many eggs were picked up, so there may be a few still out there to be found.
