Good afternoon, folks.

Let's take a quick jaunt over to the state capital, Sacramento, shall we?

I visited here in 2003 and it was a very pleasant experience. Seeing the huge S-P shops languishing was not a good sight, though. Has there been any effort to try to save them? I thought there was something to that end?

Later tonight we will board the Coast Starlight and continue up the Pacific coast and eventually into Vancouver. Everyone have their documents in order for the Customs folks? Has Bear had his shots?

 Coast_cal by Edmund, on Flickr

I hope Brent has his kitchen project far enough along to host some surprise visitors Surprise

Where has TF been during the tour? Hope he didn't get left behind in Chacago?

Ken, you doin' OK?

Cheers, Ed

I hope Ken is ok.

I installed legs on my benchwork.  I left them a little long, because both the framing and the foam are a little different.  I then realized I installed it upside down.

Watched a Youtube video from the webcam at La Grange, KY.  The tracks run right down the middle of the street.   A truck like Amazon uses, pulled up to the curb, the driver went across the tracks and the street to a store on th other side.

A train comes by.  The driver comes out of the store, hops on a flatcar, walks across the flatcar and jumps off to get to his truck.

he'd be calling ME the stupid one!

Is it just me, or does anyone else think railroad safety should be taught in primary schools?

Hello Railfans!

Top of the day to ya! Another balmy 35f on the ticker today. Overcast from the RAIN (notice i said RAIN not SNOW!!!) which brings us to our daily HUMBUG!

Now normally i wouldnt dare humbug a rainy day, but i was promised SNOW! About the only good thing to look forward to is the Coast Starlight trip tonight.

Always wanted to take that trip and have envisioned it many times. Plus ive never been to the left side of Canada either. Looking forward to what your bringing us there Ed.

I also hope Ken is ok as well. As for everyone else also. Have a good evening all!

I visited the museum in 2019. The cab-forward was amazing.

This small scale locomotive was quite a sight. I think it was something in between "live-steam" and "narrow-guage", but I am not sure how to describe it. The placard said that the cab was replaced when it was brought to the museum for display. I imagine the original was much larger.

This was my favorite display in the museum. I could have examined this all day long. It was the most fascinating sight to behold.

I do not know if these are the shops you are referring to. I saw this beautiful SANTA FE northern with the boiler jacketing removed there. This was on the museum grounds.

Hi Ed,

I have been remiss. I have been so enthralled by your tour of North America that I neglected to comment. Thank you for taking my suggestion and doing such a great job with it!Bow

The video of the California State Railway Museum was excellent. I really liked seeing the underside and the inside of the F series locomotive.

I'm looking forward to the west coast and Vancouver. I hope we will be taking the Canadian at least part way across the continent. I rode it out west and back in 1965.

Thanks again,

Dave

Greetings all!

SeeYou190
My favorite video so far was the Safety Video from the 1950s.

I was even amazed that they allowed the kids so much leeway, even under the supervision of the film crew, to climb around the equipment the way they did. I cringed at some points!

Glad you are enjoying the tour, Kevin. Two more states will be added to our map as we head north along the beautiful coast into the pine-forrested beauty of Oregon and Washington, then on into Vancouver, B.C.

Our train got into a little fog this evening:

 SP_coast by Edmund, on Flickr

Hope it clears up before we get to the good scenery.

The Southern Pacific sure had some fun with their paint schemes back in the late '80s. I believe these are what were refered to as the Kodachrome scheme. It was brought on by the proposed and failed merger of the SP and Santa Fe.

 SP_7342 by Edmund, on Flickr

I find it rather attractive. Here's the same engine, perhaps at a later date with a slight modification.

Here's the Santa Fe version of the "pre-merger" paint scheme:

I am trying to get our passenger service representative to move me to another room. The ladies I've had to "roomate" with keep me up all night with their giggling and chattering Tongue Tied

She told me that there WAS one opening in a single room with a fellow named Bear.     Um... I said I'll get back to her on that.

NOOOOOOOOO!

Ed, I wish you sould have never shared that picture of the SOUTHERN PACIFIC SD-40 in the German Flag color scheme.

I was so proud of my unique STRATTON AND GILLETTE Freight Service F-3s, and now I see a prototype used the same scheme.

Ugh.

Good evening diners... I am up late... Chloe, please bring me over an ice cold brew.

Ed said we will be in Washington by the morning. If we stop in Seattle, I am going to jump off the train and go hug my baby.

I felt terrible when I woke up today. Something was not agreeing with my stomach at all. I got nothing done, so it was a wasted day.

However, since everyday is Saturday now, it does not matter at all.

I have water leaking into the trunk of my Impala. I heard it when I drove to Home Depot yesterday to get supplies. It was sloshing around on turns.

Today I removed the trunk liner and the spare tire, and found about six quarts of water in the tub.

This is going to be a pain.

Still... The World Is A Beautiful Place.

Our 1988 Honda Civic developed a major leak one day just before we got rid of it. Unfortunately it wasn't limited to the trunk. We were driving in heavy rain when the driver's side rear floor started fill up with water. Our son was pretty upset with that but we told him to just hold his feet up. After all, how much water could there be? However, as we were getting close to home we had to stop on the downward slope of a hill. I got an immediate taste of what my son was experiencing as the water sloshed forward into the driver's foot well. Suddenly I was up to my ankles in very cold water!! We sold the car uncertified about a week later.

Here's another nice look at the NAPM layout. Something to enjoy with your coffee or tea this morning.

I can only hope to get my layout to this level of detail and completion!

I think there might be a bit of confusion here over David's use of the term 'idiot'. I believe that it was meant to be self deprecating. I can't imagine David deliberately calling another forum member an 'idiot', even though I'm sure that I have personally qualified for that designation on more than one occasion.Smile, Wink & GrinLaughLaugh

David, please clarify your comment.  Oops, David has already done so. Thanks David.

You know when you tell a joke and it backfires.

One thing for certain I have never called anyone  an idiot  (except myself)   even in life, never mind a Forum.

I hope Ed did not take it the wrong way.

Good morning

mbinsewi

I think I'll go to back of train and see if regular diner contributor Mr. TF is still with us.

Well,  I was in the back of the train, ...Until Sunday morningTongue Tied

I think we were somewhere between Chicago and New Orleans at the time when I started coming down with the good fluLaugh  I never thought I'd see a day when I called a flu good.  A wicked stomach flu that keeps you on the couch for a better part of the week is better than catching the Big Kahuna.  I'm just lucky I brushed paths with the better of bugs I guess!

I just started feeling a little better a few days ago.  I think Judy brought it home to me from the hotel, although she never got it.

Brent,  I missed the Canadian-United States junior hockey gameCrying  Unfortunately that one slipped by me as I don't get out much to hear the Talk of the Town anymore.  I did look up the results of the game thoughWhistlingLaughSmile, Wink & Grin

Ed,  Thanks for doing such a fantastic job hosting the diner this monthYes  What a great idea having it on the Train moving around the Country.

I did see the Lunatics on the grass Railfanning.  "Remembering days, of Daisy chains and laughs, got to keep the lunars on the path" Laugh

Well,  I missed you guys!  Hope everyone is well, and we hear from Ken doing better soon.

Glad to see you back TF! I hope you are feeling better. I get the flu shot every year, and I have not been stricken with a flu in decades. Here in Florida we get Winter visitors from all over the country, and they all bring their germ-bag diseases with them. They also bring their money, so we need to tolerate the infections. We are really missing that money right now.

Ick!

Now we need Ken to check in. Empty chairs in the diner concern me.

Indifferent

Ed is doing a fantastic job with the diner this month, and I have been enjoying every mile of it.

Ed is doing a fantastic job!

Good to see you back and around TF.  I thought maybe you and Judy went on one of your trips.

We (wife and I ) get a flu shot every year, along with all the other vacinations, shingles, pneumonia, and others.

I forgot to mention, while we were in CA., according to Athearn's FB ads, they are hiring, looking for a Product Manager, Model Trains Division, in Long Beach, CA.

All of Christmas is now put away and out of sight.  It all fits in storage containers, that are under the layout.

I have some projects in the works, posting previous projects in the WPF got me thinkin' that I best be gettin'er done. Cowboy

There is this HUGE bright thing in the sky this morning around here, not sure if it's safe to be out in! Surprise

Maybe if I sneak around the corner of the garage,  expose myself to it just a little at a time, I'll be OK. Smile, Wink & Grin

Later!

Howdy .....

Ed ... You are doing a great job.

I also have visited the CA RR Museum in Sacramento. It was about 15 to 20 years ago.  .... I would add some of my photos of it to those already posted, but I no longer have them in my Flickr account.

When I was a kid, my family took a long vacation by train. We lived in Chicago area. Trip included...... Chicago to Los Angeles on Santa Fe Super Chief. .... LA to San Diego and return via Santa Fe ..... LA to San Francisco on SP Coast Daylight... SF to Portland on SP Shasta Daylight. ..... Portland to Seattle on Union Pacific .... Seattle to Victora, BC and to Vancouver, BC via Canadian Pacific Princess ship. .... Vancouver to Lake Louise via CP. .... Lake Louise to St. Paul, MN via CP and Soo Line.... St Paul to Chicago via CB&Q Twin City Zephyr.

Here is a bagage ticket from the Shasta Daylight on the trip.

I hope Ken is okay.

Waited in all day for some track to arrive  (not that I was going anywhere).    At 1815 this evening it arrived.   Track laying will commence tomorrow.

Meanwhile  --

It is a cold but sunny day here in Ohio! The daylight hours are getting longer, too Big Smile

Seattle? I was more confused than anything. Never once thought there was a hint of animosity...  everyone's here for a good time Yes

Lets take a look around the town on the neat monorail:

I remember seeing this in one of the episodes of Fraser. Maybe we will see Daphne, too?

We will spend the rest of today here before we take one of the Cascades trains for the hundred fifty or so mile ride to Vancouver, B.C. tonight.

These talgo trains were never high up on my list of "attractive" trains Ick!

The diner will be spotted on the private car track in the beautiful King Street Station:

(Well, it didn't look all that spiffy in the '70s but it is better today)

I'll check in later after chores —

Enjoy! Ed

Good evening

Thanks for the welcome backs, ...Happy to be back

Nice to be in Seattle.  That is one place I've always wanted to go.  I've heard it's really beautiful there.

Well,  I came in from my porch shaking like a leaf on a tree a while ago.  I was cutting foam with the table saw for another Bridge I started today.  I finished the stencils this morning.

The blade doesn't go high enough for 4 inches.  I had to rip half way,  flip-em and run them through again.  I have an extreme amount of respect for power tools.  Especially my chop saw, table saw and grinder, for good reasons we won't get into here.  I was already a little apprehensive about cutting thin pieces of foam.  Believe me I kept my fingers far from the blade and it's a good thing that I did.  One of the pieces of foam caught, flipped and spit out.

It's the 6 by 6 with the Fast & Final filler already in it.  It was the thicker half that caught and spit out.

It took me about an hour to get the nerve up to finish ripping my pieces.  I better not make any mistakes on my bridge because I don't think I'm going to cut foam with circular saws anymore.  Too Dangerous!

P.S.  I love sausage potato soup MLCDinner  Sounds good to me!  What time is dinner? LaughSmile, Wink & Grin
