Good morning.

Weather forecast changed from freezing rain and snow to clear!

I'm going to work under the kitchen sink today, so I'll be sore tomorrow.  Going to go for a visit to granddaughter tomorrow, so the sore body will just be sitting in a car.

Ray - I'm not belittling the work you did to be good. It is just that doing what i thought was all that, I still came up short. I do believe some people are predisposed to things and that even with that gift becoming exceptional requires a lot of effort.

J.R. - Understood and agree!  That is basically what I was trying to say.  You can have all the talent, but it still takes work to get there.  That also includes our hobby and most everything in life.  BTW, I consider you to be one of the "good Guys" on here!  (Well, most of the folks here I would count in that class too....)

Will be spending a bit of time cleaning out the white stuff from my driveway today.  Got around 5" total I guess.  Still cold outside so I will work for a while and then come back inside too get warm!

Good morning, everybody !

Coffee and a cheese danish, please.

I'll add another Alco PA to the photos Ed posted. The MKT had a few of them in the Texas Special color scheme.

I was running trains last evening. Mostly CB&Q and GN passenger trains. There was only one freight train, and it had the SD24's.

Nobody answered me about my idea for February. I think it would be fun doing it that way, but I would like to see some Yes's or some No's....If Yes's,We need somebody to start the monthly thread, and thereafter various Diner Patrons can take turns with trains going various places. If No's, we need suggestions on what we will do.

Ed .... Again, thanks for doing so well with January's journey.

Dave.  I busted a gut reading your post on your cookie/cookie dough logicLaughLaughLaugh  Makes complete sense to me.  And all these years I thought I was the only one who thinks like thatLaugh

Judy gets upset when I hover into the kitchen to scarf some of the cookie dough too.  One time at the grocery store I threw my own loaf of cookie dough into the cart.  Wouldn't you know it, she ended up baking that tooCryingLaugh

All this talk of cooking.  Chef

When I lived  with my grandparents on Fridays Grandmother would bake breadcakes.    I would enjoy 'helping'.   Stirring etc.  and making the dough into breadcakes.  At the end she would make a small breadcake for me.

All the breadcakes would be lined along the hearth, the heat of the coal fire  causing the bread to 'rise'.

I must have drove my Grandmother crazy with me asking "Are they ready yet?"

"No not yet."

About fifteen seconds later,   "Are they ready yet?" I asked again

"No!"

You get the picture.

Eventually,   "Yes,"

"Can I have mine?"   knowing fine well it was too hot.

"Wait until it cools down."

More "Can I,s"  and "No,s."

Then the golden word.

Butter soaking into the bread.   Then bite!    I can taste it even now.

Post Hog!

I dropped Judy off at the hotel this morning and just got a call from her a few minutes ago.

Never a dull moment at the hotel.  The stories she tells me over the years.  Apparently there was some deranged 70 year old woman walking the halls with a see-through nightie on.  Judy said it was disgusting, ... I supposeLaugh

The front desk was happy to call the cops and from what I understand, after they made her go in her room and get dressed, they were happy to escort her to the psych ward.

Hopefully she gets the help she needs and I am thankful that I was not thereSigh

Gidday Garry, I did see your idea, and immediately thought that trying to organise “The Esteemed Diners “could be akin to herding cats!

That said, it’s not a bad idea, it’s just that we’ve been spoilt by North Brit Daveand Eds hosting skills. (especially Eds log of hunney!!!Dinner)

I’ll chip in if I can, unless I’ve missed it, there’s a named train we haven’t yet ridden on yet.

Actually, I suspect that there have been quite a few, I hadn’t heard of the Texas Special until I saw those photos of yours. It is a nice colour scheme.

LaughLaughLaugh

That's funny stuff JRLaugh  As no surprise,  after the humor, there is a lot of Truth to that.

Actually the hotel does allow dogs now.  It's a fancy hotel and the rates have been dropped from $200 to $70 a night in an effort to keep busy.

Because of this the class of clientele has changed drastically.  That's why the rooms are trashed and take longer to clean.  The girls can't finish their workload in a day and either drop rooms or stay late.  A sense of achievement or accomplishment that is usually felt at the end of a work day is fading fast down there

I've heard Judy complain frequently about these people that trash their rooms and she wonders what their house or apartment looks like.

I've never heard her complain once about a dog though.  Apparently the dogs are more well-behaved and have more respectIndifferent

Hello Railfans!

Top of the morning to ya! A perfectly grey day here but no precipatation. So were HUMBUGGING at half mast.... so far.

Spent the last two nights in the drawing room (pun intended) putting the final touchs on the model im working on. The printer has worked so much last 6 months the bearings are screaming! Need to replace them before any more printing. Bang Head

Garry) Heres a Yes for your idea. I also thought the idea about passing a model around wasnt bad either, that was suggested too. Alas, with both ideas, i think there are some logistics to overcome.

But what do i know, i cant host so im just here for the free refills. Laugh

Cynical Bear) Theres a few named trains i wouldnt mind riding on. If anyones fishing for an idea, be a good one to spend a month on named trains. Im sure theres enough of them to cover 30 days worth.

BTW - that was a kick-butt doggy sign!

In General) I liked the FA shots. Not a loco you see alot of. Kinda like Boxcab electrics (hint hint).

If you really wanna get scarce, lets see who can pull a McKeen motor car pic outta their pocketses (Golem! Golem!). Though i bet i know who will.

Have a great evening folkses!

Evening

Sometimes I really miss my big house I sold in Prior Lake.  Not so much the extensive Remodeling and Additions but it's the simple things like the deep freezer in the garage.

My eyes are bigger than my stomach these days when we go grocery shopping.  Especially during the pandemic.  We come out of that grocery store with two heaping carts looking like the Grinch who stole ChristmasLaugh

Judy gave me instructions this morning that she made my favorite Scuba Steve's Seaweed Surprised and the Southern Banana Pudding last nightDinnerDinnerDinner

I guess it's my turn.  You can slap together tater tot hotdish in about 3 minutes after you brown the beef.  Stick it in the oven at 375 and you're doneLaugh

Quick comfort food but getting back to what I was saying earlier.  My freezer in my little Refridgelator looks like some kind of overstocked warehouseLaugh  I had to almost completely unload it with stuff falling all over the floor to find that one bag of tater tots.

I do miss that deep freezer out in the garage I can tell you! Laugh

P.S.  Its 5:15 and I just looked outside and it's still light out.  Refreshing!  It just dawned on me the season is turning the other wayYes

I'll move the Diner and get things set up. I believe by midnight Sunday we'll be in Dallas:

Kevin — yes, I believe your map is accurate. From Dallas I'll see what we can grab to head toward Idaho and have some Great Big Baked Potatoes, ala Northern Pacific!

On a serious note I do know quite a bit about potato farming

Antigo Wisconsin where my brother-in-law Steve lives has huge potato Farms.

The guy up there that owns most of them has a private Learjet.  Apparently he isn't in town very often because he has bigger fish to fry and other businesses elsewhere.

I never knew this before but Steve told me before Harvest they spray poison all over the field before they harvest the potatoes.

They are too soft to harvest organically and would get damaged.  The poison toughens up the skin on the potatoes so they can process them out of the field.

Anyone want a baked potato with your steak tonightLaugh  Next we'll take a tour through the Wiener FactoryLaughWink

FYI  Don't ever buy creamed corn at the store.  Make your own at home.  You don't want to know.

There are quite a few potato farms in Florida.

Have you ever seen the Orida ad where the little girl holds up a potato and says in only a few minutes the potato will be processed into a bag of frozen french fries?

That is absolutely true. They can pull potatoes from the ground and process them fully on the farm and even package them as soon as they are harvested. It is an amazing operation to see in person.

The quality control is astounding.

You should really see a McDonalds potato harvest. Those guys insist on a level of perfection that is almost impossible. They have control of every step of the process from seed to fryer.

Ed ..... I must have missed it. Perhaps I was distracted by photos of beautiful Alco PA's. Wink ...... Anyhow thanks for your willingness to do the February DIner thread. You said you might be absent on some days, but there should be other Diners willing to fill in. I will gladly do some of it except during the second week of February when I will be unavailable. .... If we Diners are in Denver, perhaps we can take the Ski Train to Winter Park for a day of skiing.

I remember the NP ads for Idaho potatoes in their dining cars. I saw the North Coast Limited numerous times on Burlington tracks, but I dtd not ride on it. When we were in Idaho in May of 2019, we ate at a local restaurant with big baked potatoes. They offered a variety of toppings. It was very good, but very filling.

Douglas .... Thanks for the Yes. However, it looks like Ed has a good plan.

Bear .... Thanks for your thoughts about the February Diner. It looks like Ed will kindly handle most of it. The Texas Special was operated by MKT and Frisco, and it went between St Louis, MO and San Antonio, TX making stops at several cities on the route. If interested, search the internet for "Texas Special Train".

Kevin ..... You talked about McDonalds french fries. I know many people think McDonalds fries are the best of the fast food restaurants.

Everybody .... Anybody who wants to help Ed out with photos of trains would be welcome.

Happy Model Railroading !

Speaking of potatoes the tater tot hotdish needed to be serviced.

All the Mrs. Dash and other seasonings are on top and I have to fold it and put the cheddar cheese on top before I put it in the oven for about 20 more minutes

Now it's time to go pick Judy up from work.   When I take this out of the oven when we get home I will crunch some potato chips on top while it's cooling
