Gidday All, well today started off with some “Rock n Roll” locally, a 4.5 earthquake followed by a 4.9, there was a total of some 68 seismic events. There appears that there has only been light damage reported so far.

JR, enjoyed your photo of the Huka Falls.

Chloe, I’ll have a glass of Pinot Gris, please, I was going to have it down with the young lady with the veil but I see Douglas is already in attendance so won’t cramp his style (???), besides she may mistake me for a Bear rug, and anyhow Her-in-Doors would certainly object!

Ed, apart from our Mystical Magic Mystery Tour, thanks for that link to the blog on the Detroit River Car Ferries.  While I’ve stashed away most of those photos of the Car Ferries and the Windsor and Detroit Yards, there was two photos taken at the Wabash apron of great interest, especially showing the associated buildings. Some more scratch building in the future.Sigh LaughLaugh

Managed to finish installing all the insulation in the basement/ future train room. It’s been a slow process what with the day job and all!

Good morning all.  A cold, wintry day with a 'biting' wind from the north.  'Shivers my timbers'.

Jalopenos were mentioned earlier.   No thank you.  We give them a miss every time.

Ed.   Enjoying the trip immensely.  Thanks.

Coffee   Coffee time.   A drop of Rum in mine  'to keep the cold out'.   Not saying it does, but enjoying the coffee.  Laugh

Ed, apart from our Mystical Magic Mystery Tour, thanks for that link to the blog on the Detroit River Car Ferries.

Thank you, Bear! Glad you found it useful. I have foggy memories of riding what I believe was the Grand Trunk ferry, just me and the cook, on an old C&O Business car. As I mentioned in an earlier post, since this car had two large propane tanks it was not permitted in the Detroit River Tunnel. GT moved the car all by itself with no other revenue. Wonder what that bill looked like?

So, Welcome To Chicago Big Smile

Nothing is as Iconic to Chicago as the Alton Junction, 21st St. Lift bridge. I see three skyscrapers going up, the one on the left being the Sears (Willis) Tower.

When this switcher is done with the Super Chief he will have to go to the I-C Central Station and pick up the Diner and move her to Union Station.

I believe this is the third time our route has criss-crossed. Tomorrow we have a treat in store as we haed west again, this time on the Milwaukee Road and we will have a day to spend in Milwaukee to see the haunts of the Model Railroader staff and the good folks at Walthers plus I hope we can get in to see the North American Prototype Modeler's club!

You can get around just about anywhere by train or the CTA! Be sure to ask for a free map...

Good Morning All,

16F and breezy out this morning. I'll have a regular to go please Zoe. That quick jaunt makes ya dizzy Ed. Not much else to report right now though I was disappointed the last football game yesterday became more an old time hockey game.

Chicago. I hate driving through it and I'm not sure I care much for O'Hare airport either. I hope some day to have my act together to take Amtrak from here to Milwaukee (through Chicago) when we are racing at Road America. I have only visited Chicago once when we got an 8 hour liberty from Great Lakes Training Center. Two of my friends in our training company were from Evanston so we decided we would go to downtown Chicago taking the train from GLTC. Of course we were in our best dress blues with hats and pea coats completely unsuited to the -20F or so windy weather in January. We soon started turning blue to match the uniforms. The trip is lost to the fog of time but I do remember having a meal and a single draft beer at their favorite establishment (we were in charge of the recruit company back at the base so we couldn't have more as going back tipsy or worse was not on ). It was the middle of the great unpleasentness in Viet Nam so the highlight of the trip was being accosted by a nice little old lady downtown who whacked us with her umbrella and added to our vocabulary words we did not know. Those were different times.

So much for fond memories, time to pick up tools and get on with it.  Ciao, J.R.

Good morning.

This doesn't bode well for today.

Last night, there were supposed to be snow flurries by morning, less than an inch.  Then the major storm will hit after lunch today.

Instead, I've gotten up to over 4 inches already, and the big hit today has gotten stronger.

I'm heading out right now to get the oil changed in my car.  Fun.

The only good news is that the storm won't end until tomorrow, so I don't have to get out and scoop today.

On my cul-de-sac, there is a widow across the street, a widow next door to her, and next to her a couple with the husband who has heart trouble.  I have a snow blower.  And ... their driveways are all double and long.  Guess what I will be doing all day tomorrow?

Today -- fireplace and nap.

That's being a good neighbor John. The CFO operates the snowblower at home (I just keep it running and do the detail shovel w**k) but she will do the sidewalks for the neighbors if there is any accumulation and we usually help out the people across the street from us as they have no snowblower and their son moved out so they are on their own.

Alton Junction!  Rich will be waiting for us.

Just a heads up about Milwaukee, and all of Wisconsin, the state is mourning right now after another Packer season of "almost, but not quite", "so close!", "at the Super Bowl doorsteps", "within reach",  "we can do this",......etc....etc.

The Green Bay Packers are taken very seriously!.

And to add to the insult, were the TV anouncers, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.

So, just be gentle to us Wisconsinites for a few days, and do not mention Tom Brady, or Joe Buck.

Laugh

Good morning

Sleep in day.  Judy's day off for four days.  Coffee time and brunch at 11:00Dinner

Made some good progress on the bridge yesterday.  I'll post an update when I get a little more done.

I know how seriously Wisconsin takes thier Packers Mike.  I have lots of family over there.  On visits in the past we have had some good old family rivalry on Vikings Packers games over thereLaugh  Fun Stuff.  I've always enjoyed Wisconsin and time spent with family over there.  I'll sure be glad when we can resume our frequent visits one of these days.

I'll never forget the time we went to Chicago and went up to the observation deck in the Sears Tower.  They have a closed in platform at the top with a glass floor you can walk out and look down.  Four feet away from it was about as close as I get as I am afraid of heights.  Dinner in the top of the Hancock building was quite a fun experience as well.  I remember looking down at a passenger plane flying by.  I don't ever remember doing that before.

Well the coffee beeped.

Have a great day you guys

MLC,

And I noted that Detroit to Jackson took only 1:55.  In the 50's the trains we're nearly that fast! Wink  Not nearly enough time to run up the street for those coney islands.  No wonder I never caught a whiff of them in the diner.  Recognized the flash-past of the West Ave. overpass as we left town.  Spent a few cumulative hours under those arches when I was a kid, getting smoked and cindered by the last of the NYC's steamers.

Was quite surprised to note how much of the route was single-track, much of the route west of Ka'zoo apparently looking like it had been so forever.

Good morning, everybody .

Ed ..... Thanks for the quick ride to Chicago ..... I watched the 1988 video of the F40 cab ride. Wow! High speed rail ! I have riden on that line several times, but it was so fast I could hardly recognize anything.

Here is Chicago Union Station before Amtrak and before tall buildings were built above it. I rode Burlington commuter trains into Union Station from where I grew up in the western suburbs.

Here is a typical Burlington commuter train of the 1960's.

Here is a wintertime California Zephyr. The train could not go through the wash rack in freezing weather, and so it was very dirty.

Here is a CB&Q train and a PRR train arriving at Union Station.

There were three interurban electirc railroads serving Chicago when I was young, and I rode on each of them. This photo shows a Chicago, Aurora, and Elgin train.

The other two electric interurban lines were the North Shore and the South Shore. I rode the North Shore to Milwaukee and back a few times. I rode the South Shore to Michigan City, IN and back also.

Freight trains typically had F-units when I grew up. This photo shows Burlington and Great Northern F-units pooled for the train to St. Paul. MN.

I see Ed has a picture of a Milwaukee Road Hiawatha train. I rode that train to and from Wisconsin Dells.

No thanks!  I'll take snow, tornadoes, and bugs over sitting through an earthquake.  Hopefully no serious damage and no injuries.

All right -- I want to know how you did that.  My wife's hardest work in a snowstorm is telling me what snow I didn't get completely cleared.

Mike, there must be something about the Packers.  One of my 4th grade teachers left Wisconsin over 30 years ago, but he still lives and dies Packer football.  Of course I left New Orleans 30 years ago, and I am still a Saints fan, so I guess once it's in your blood, it's in.

It is snowing hard right now.

Good Morning,

A chilly -18F right now and colder tonight. Supposed to get down to -33F with a -43 wind chill. The gas fireplace is on and Robbie is curled up beside me so no worries.

I hope to finish the shredding of documents from my Mother's estate today.  I will keep the essentials but it has been 10 years now so a lot of the financials and other stuff can go.

I ran the Pacific yesterday and plan on doing so today. It runs great and sounds so too.

NorthBrit David, if you like cream in your coffee, try a shot of Amarula. It is a cream liquor from South Africa. I started doing that when we stopped for morning coffee when on safari. Really tastes great.

Ok,  coffee with Amarula for everyone in the Diner.

Nah... It is not a leopard of any sort.

This felid has the longest legs for its size than any other cat. A leopard has the lngest tail of any cat, and this tail is not so long.

Good morning from Winter Paradise.

My heart goes out to all suffering from snow and ice right now. We are at 76 degrees, clear blue skies, and a gentle breeze.

Everybody have fun today, I am going to be doing the same thing I do every day... working on the house.

Have fun working on the house today Kevin.  I would open up all the windows if I had that kind of beautiful weather.

I'm taking Judy to Minneopa State Park in Mankato to see the bison and the waterfalls.  Something to do today.  Should be fun but I hope I don't get a buffalo dent in my truckIndifferent

Good morning from the Pacific Rim where earthquakes are commonplace. Bear, hope those shakers don't get any worse, you guys have had more than your fair share.

I did an hour on the bike just now as I am up 3lbs and that is battle stations for me. I hurt my back so I could not exercise and was drinking a glass or two of wine every day as well. I have absolutely no problem losing pounds but it is easier to lose 3 than it is to lose 30.Yes

SeeYou190
My heart goes out to all suffering from snow and ice right now. We are at 76 degrees, clear blue skies, and a gentle breeze.

We have a dusting of snow right now and I love it. Some of my best days on this planet were cross country skiing or snowshoeing or all the hundreds of days I spent at Whistler downhill skiing. Also sailing in the cold is exhilarating, banging the ice off the rigging just adds to the fun. Don't get me wrong I love the tropics and have been to Hawaii at least 30 times to recharge my batteries. After three weeks of the same old weather, I am ready to get home as I really appreciate the seasons. I worked outside my whole life and the weather was never a factor in how I looked upon the day.

I have to go to Home Depot and return all the stuff I didn't use in the reno. It is not just around the corner so you buy what you think you might need and take the rest back. I did not do that until the guys at HD told me I should, as that's what everyone else does that lives rurally.

TF, keep an eye on those wild beast. My Mom bought a brand new fully loaded Dodge Caravan ES AWD and the first time she took it out to field train her dogs she returned to the vehicle to find about a dozen cows rubbing themselves on it. They all had tags in their ears and those did a lot of damage. She got that fixed and two weeks later we were at Canadian Tire and just as we came out of the store we saw a car slam into a shopping cart really hard which propelled it across the parking lot at least two hundred feet into the side of the van.Tongue Tied That thing was jinxed, but it was reliable as could be, I don't think a dime was ever spent on repairs, after my mom died we kept it for the Nanny to drive.

Well I have stopped sweating so it is shower time and then HD

All the best to all.
