I watched the crocodiles snagging wildebeest off the shore on the Quest Channel tonight.  Nature is really something else.

I did reserve a compartment under the plane to Laughlin tomorrow morning for you.  We will be leaving at 2:00 in the morning to get to Rochester Minnesota to board the plane by 5:30.  I tried to get you aboard on Coach but they said the last time they ran out of beef sticks and you got a little rambunctiousLaugh

If you can make it down from North Dakota in time we will see you there.  We will be having prime rib in the prime rib room tomorrow evening and I have ordered a special wildebeest lunch just for you the following afternoon.

Brent, that photo isn't a Victoria Beach train.

Charlie, I just copied and pasted the caption that was with the photo so I can't say for sure.

Had a bunch of people in tonight and we were talkin movies as they always are asking the kid things. I asked about Baby Driver and they all said it was good, so we'll see.

Just waiting for some puppies to arrive. It is a beautiful day to do nothing, so it is hurry up and wait. Played my guitar out on the deck for three hours and made lunch for the gang. It is very quiet here right now, inside and out, very ominous.

.

I did not sleep in, but I have had a busy day.

.

I spent the day (yesterday too) working on my "proof of concept" layout project. A new update is over in the Layout Building section of the forums.

.

I need to be up at 4:30 AM tomorrow and then drive to Orlando for a meeting at 8:30 with Lynx Transit, so I will be going to be in bed early tonight.

.

Wow, four posts in ten minutes. I guess Garry just needed to give us a nudge.

Everybody else: I hope you find some time to visit here.

Hello!

Does anyone know where the diner finally wound up? Somewhere between Ottawa and Philly (or was it Harrisburg?) last I heard.

I'm checking on the progress of the Eastbound Lakeshore Limited. I am picking up son and daughter-in-law and two grand kids when they arrive in Cleveland at 5:38 this morning. So far, fingers crossed, they are ON TIME! No. 6 was six hours late into Chicago. **

They took #5 west last week and arrived in Salt Lake City, seventeen hours late.

OK, this is the Capitol but close is good enough.

Happy Monday, everyone!

Donuts are self-serve this morning. Flo is taking the day off.

 donuts by Edmund, on Flickr

I'll take a custard-filled Bavarian cream eclair, please. Never cared for that white, fluffy, sugary stuffing you find in some donuts. I guess that's imitation Holland cream?

Cheers, Ed

 ** Update:

#49 was ON TIME to the minute at 5:38 this morning. From my experience this is a one-in-ten thousand chance for Amtrak!

Sheer coincidence, but “Baby Driver” was the featured Sunday Night movie on one of the local TV channels, so we decided to give it a try. Now if I have an early Monday morning start, I’ll hit the hay early if the movies not worth watching. I stayed until the end, and her-in-doors enjoyed it. Not bad, but not sure if I’d watch it again, but then having music from the Dutch bands, “Focus” and “Golden Earring” as part of the last chase soundtrack is a big tick, IMO.

Good morning from a warm and sunny West Coast.

TF, stop teasing me with photo's out the window of airplanes it really makes me want go somewhere. Good on ya for getting four of a kind. I remember once we were in Vegas and I was putting my last few shekels in a slot machine while we were waiting to board the plane and won a pot big enough that they had to call the attendant to come pay me. I was the last one on the plane and apologized to the crew for holding them up and they laughed and said it happens quite often.

Between 8 and 10 last night we landed six puppies so we will be hearing the pitter patter of little feet around the house again.

Image may contain: dog

It means the house will be full of visitors for the next two months with people coming to see them. The wife will keep four of them. Two will be kept here, the other two will go to show homes and campaigned by whoever gets them and two will be sold to other show or pet homes.

It makes for an interesting social life being married to my wife but the whole dog thing does nothing for me. She has the same opinion about my trains and that is why we get along so well, we both have our own interest and both fully support the other. Life is good, except when a puppy eats a hole through the drywall, but then I am now an expert drywall repairman so there is an upside to everything.Laugh

I was playing basketball with the kid yesterday for about 2 1/2 hours and really hurt my foot. I just kept playing thinking it would go away and last night it really hurt and today it really, really hurts. I hope I can get on the bike an peddle or I will go through serious withdrawl. It could be a few nights of TV ahead of me, oh well I have hardly had it on since I finished Game OF Thrones so I should be able to find something. I'll see if I can find Baby Driver. Its been 20 years since I have seen Lawrence Of Arabia, that's good for four hours. I have never seen Gone With The Wind, I have started it a couple of times and couldn't get more than half an hour into it. Maybe now I have matured a little more I'll get through it.

Having to sell my wife's stepmoms condo as she has been put in a home with advanced dementia. I am staying out of it. Her half brother is handling it and he is quite disfunctional and clueless so I had to whisper in my wifes ear about a couple of things he was doing that were just stupid financially. She got on the phone to him and he is back on course. He spent most of his life hanging out in the punk rock world and now thinks he is so hard done by. His brother and my wife chose to go to University and become highly educated proffessionals instead. "Work" isn't in his vocabulary.

Okay, now my foot really, really, really hurts. Maybe it's BONE SPURS! I hear you can get out of anything with those.Laugh Oh the pain....Oh the agony...... Woman I need more coffee! Where's my little bell?Laugh

I am getting restless, can you tell? That reminds me of a song, where's my guitar?

Can you spot the train?

Winter is coming.

All the best to all.

Good Afternoon All,

Just dropping by between trips. Back from Mt Tremblant and off to Elkhart, Wisc and Road America tomorrow. Blues Festival was at Mt Tremblant and some of the bands were good. Lots got rained out by big storms that caused the outdoor stages to be vacated. We dodged the rain racing as it only showed up at the end of out days. Did lose a 20 x 53 awning though over Saturday night. Only drowned one car which we managed to get dried out enough to work though the data system isn't 100% yet.

Flight is at 6am tomorrow so we leave the shop at 3:30 to make Bradley by 5 and hope for the best.      Ciao, J.R.

Little sad tonight. Ran into Mary, Joe's wife that are our neightbor across the street. Wife and I visted him and Dwight last Monday (Dwight is my next door neightbor) Asked Mary how Joe and Dwight are doing. Told me "Dwight is doing fine, but Joe is not going to make it." First time she has emitted that to me. Joe is a great guy and will be missed when he is gone.

Those fuel tanks are actually "flap track farings", they cover the mechanism that controls the flaps.

Image result for What is a flap track fairing?

Here is a video and you can see right inside at the end.

The wings do bounce a lot, if they didn't they would break off, just think of them as being big springs.

People tend to fear what they don't understand, the best way to get over the fear of flying is to take some flying lessons. I kid you not.

Brent, that's a neat video of the various parts of the wings doing their thing on take off and landing.

I have never been afraid to fly. When I was an Air Cadet I was afraid of getting airsick, which I usually did. Now I'm afraid of turbulence because it bangs my back around. However, I do have to give the airlines credit. My back gets banged around far more on the shuttle trips between the airport and the hotel/parking. I have learned to sit in the front of the buses. It still hurts, and the other riders look at me funny when I vocalize the pain, i.e. scream in agony. Somebody needs to design a suspension for the buses that doesn't break peoples' backs!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

The wings do bounce a lot, if they didn't they would break off, just think of them as being big springs.

I was on a Qantas 747 out of Cairns to Sydney, sitting in the aisle seat behind the left hand wing with a young couple, the young bride next to me and her new husband in the window seat, returning from their honeymoon, when the Captain announced that we were flying into possible turbulence and that we were to fasten our seat belts. (The seat belt light went on as well).

As I fly with the seat belt loosely on at all times, I just cinched it tight. Sure, enough the “rock and roll” started, though to be fair it was more like a waltz, when “BAMM” the young lady grabbed my left forearm so tight that her finger nails drew blood!!

She had noticed that the wing was flexing. I, surprisingly calmly, explained, as an aircraft engineer, why I would be grabbing her arm if the wing wasn’t moving! That helped calm her down, and a hostess calmed me down by bandaging my arm, and giving me several stiff rums in lieu of an aesthetic.

The young couple were very apologetic, and the flight continued without any further drama.

However, the drama restarted when I finally arrived back home, with her-in-doors demanding to know what I had done to receive such injuries!! A bottle of duty-free Baileys, and a bottle fancy French perfume, helped my explanation!

“Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn't know it so it goes on flying anyway.”- Mary Kay Ash

Good Afternoon!

Just stopping by to say hello, sit quietly in the backbooth and sip on my coffee. Life is actually quite kind to me right now, which means there are no downs, but also no ups. Most of our noisy and rude neighbors are gone on vacation and we hope they stay a little longer, wherever they are!

Nothing else to report! Our friend has put one of her apartments on the market yesterday and we all hope she is able to flip it quickly! The proceeds are destined to buy the property in Denmark. We will schedule a visit once the sale has been done.

No model railroading related activity at the moment. The layout is collecting dust, that´s all.

Have a good one!

Good Morning.

Interesting video Brent,  thanks.  All these years I was led to believe those aerodynamic cylinder things under the wings were fuel tanks as I have been told the fuel is stored in the wings.  Thanks for clearing that one up for me.

It only makes sense now after watching the video,  the high velocity of wind coming over the wings would need some kind of stabilizer than just a flap on a hinge.

I always did understand the wings are supposed to flex.  I just don't like sitting behind the wings.  I have heard that is the worst place to be if something goes wrong and statistically if something does go wrong it's usually during the landing.  I don't like the idea of sitting behind the line of fire so to speak.

I never have been a big fan of flying.  I look at it as strapping yourself into a passenger missile and giving up all your rights of controlling your own destiny.  I'm pretty much at ease after take off when we're up in the air and function normally,  it's The landings I get nervous aboutTongue Tied  I've experienced some rough ones.

That was a funny airplane story Bear,  you did get a chuckle out of meLaugh

Sorry to hear about your back problems Dave.  Back pain is the worst there is.  I hope you can find some kind of relief.  I wonder about that Teeter Hang Ups Contraption I've Seen On TV,  if it's a gimmick or helpful.

TF

Last time I flew as we were getting closer to the ground descending to land,  we hit a downdraft.  The plane sunk so many feet you could feel it in your stomach.  It was a good pilot,  he hit the throttle hard and pulled up.   We swung around about another half hour to come in for another landing.  I thanked the pilot on the way out of the plane.  That was a little freaky that time.

In a time long ago----at a place far away---I worked on auto-pilot systems for B-52 and F-106 aircraft. The wings on a B-52 will flex nearly 15 feet from takeoff configuration untill they reach flying speed. Quite a thing to witness. On the ground they have outrigger wheels to help support the wings.

I have to admit I nearly wet my pants during my first flight, when I saw those wings flex, but then I was a lad of mere 16 years of age and that flight took me from Germany to the Pacific Northwest, so I was a nervous wreck only for that reason.

I was on a flight to Florida once that hit a lot of turbulence.  People were uncomfortable but I had to point out that they would have to wait on line for an hour at Disney for a ride like that.

Good afternoon Diners.

Another postcard for you,  a good one.  Had some good luck after brunch early this afternoon on two machines.  I played Grand Lions, Judy played Wild Horses.  We both won.

I have to be honest, we haven't got back to breaking even yet but we're getting closerLaugh  it's all about having fun though right?

TF

Judy didn't win on Wild Horses, she put her winnings back in but she jumped over to my machine with 20 bucks after I cashed out and won again.  It's all good, we split everything.

Flying is not my favorote activity. However, I do it because traveling long distances makes it necessary.
