I've had my share of single malts, but never Ovaltine.  I did drink Nestle's Quick and I remember the dog.

That's Danny O'Day, Jimmy Nelson and Farfel.

The latest non political fake news is the Amelia Earhart case is closed.  Some PR hungry historian and claimed that he determined the precise length of her arm bones by photographs and clothing, and compared that to bones found and lost in 1940.   Earlier this month, no less than the National Geographic, claimed that bone sniffing dogs found the site where she died, 80 years later.  They didn't find any bones.

I had a coon hound that would bark at a tree where a racoon was 3 days earlier, but 80 years in the South Pacific is a really long time to pick up a scent.

...but I don´t mind those old distilled malt beverages,...

My Grandfather, who originated from the Highlands, reckoned a dram a day cured a lot of ills. He lived an active life til he was 93.

Ovaltine used to be more of a granular product. Somehow it has been "re-engineered" into a fine powder like all the rest.

Yep, it was quite granular with grains the same size as our sugar here. If it is a finer powder nowm this is done to "hide" the high sugar content.

How come that all the things rhat tase good are not healthy and all things healthy don´t taste good?

Happy times!

Ovomaltine is called Ovaltine outside of Switzerland. It´s one of those goodies kids love and nutrionists hate for its high sugar content. Haven´t seen for a long time, though!

I enjoy Ovaltine here sometimes. It's different now, of course, made in many different factories for different markets. The Swiss Ovomaltum doesn't have any added sugar and the US version made by Nestlé has more than any of the others. It is made by ABF in the UK and Asia.

I hope you can rest comfortably today, Ulrich.

Good Morning!

It has cooled off during the night and the temperatures are back into my comfort zone again. I hope it´ll stay that way. Our weather guesser, however seem to have a different opinion.

Petra had to call the doctor yesterday, as my BP went further down. I was flat out by the time the doc arrived. He gave me a couple of shots of I don´t know what and hooked me up to an IV bag, whichg finally made me feel a lot better. I am going to see my cardiologist on Monday - we may have to change my medication again.

Malt beverages ring a bell! In my childhood, my family spent a number of vacations in Switzerland, where we enjoyed Ovomaltine malt drinks. Ovomaltine is called Ovaltine outside of Switzerland. It´s one of those goodies kids love and nutrionists hate for its high sugar content. Haven´t seen it for a long time, though!

I am not that much into those malt, barley and water drinks, but I don´t mind those old distilled malt beverages, especially those from the Isle of Islay.

No plans for this Sunday, other than to stay afloat - somehow!

Happy times!

I'll certainly stop in for a malted "frosty" — be sure to use the Hoosier Hill maly powder I brought for you, Chloe.

My enjoyment of malt beverages also includes those made with malted barley.

When I was a little tyke my mother would meet with her sister to shop at the Higbee's bargain basement. If I promised to behave I was allowed to have a "Frosted Malted" at the little refreshment stand located under one of the escalators.

They were uniquely delicious. Served in a heavy-bottomed glass shaped like a Coca-Cola glass. A princely 10¢, too!

Years later (maybe 1970 or so) I was with a friend and decided to stop by and teach him the joys of having the world's greatest tasting malt. The shop was still there and "frosted Malted" was still on the menu but now more like 50¢.

The jerk (I mean that in a complimentary way, as in Soda Jerk) placed two styrofoam coffee cups in front of us with what can only be described as "glop" inside the cup.

You couldn't really sip it. It was more like a semi-melted Fudge-cicle. Oh No! This can't be right. At seeing the jerk again I asked if he had mistakenly dispensed brown bathtub caulk by mistake.

"Nope, that's the stuff allright. The old machine broke down a few years ago and they brought in one of these"...he pointed to a modern stainless steel thing with a swirly gizmo in front.

To help re-kindle my fondness for frosted malteds, or malt shakes if you prefer, I treated myself to a genuine Hamilton Beach model 33 some years ago.

Built like a tank, runs like a Swiss locomotive. The grandkids sure love to visit and see me getting the Hamilton-Beach ready!

The best "Soda Shop" milkshakes money could buy came from the restaurant in the Marion, Ohio, Union Station. Bar none! Great pies there, too. Of course, the treats are pretty good here at the Diner, too. Whistling

Installed Proto 2000 wheels it had Ick! plastic wheels. Ed what where you thinking! Whistling

Are you sure it had plastic wheels, Ken? I was almost certain it had Kadee wheels in it. Maybe that car slipped by but I'm pretty sure I replaced all my wheels with Kadee or other metal wheels, lots of Intermountain and Proto, too. Kadee axles are plastic.

I took a quick glance at PRR express car diagrams and almost all had 36" wheels but that car isn't really based on any PRR prototype. PRR used their own design of trucks.

cudaken
All so where would a 10-1-4 sleeper be in a passanger train? I am thinking toward the rear, but what do I know?

Generally, and that's a big general, the sleeping cars were handled at the rear of most trains. Sometimes the dining car would be the "barrier" between coach and Pullman passengers, but not always.

Back in heavyweight days there were more trains that were ALL Pullman and passengers paid an extra fare to ride them. The Chief, Broadway, Century all come to mind. So there may have been an RPO, then combine baggage/club car, several 12-1 or 6-6 or 8-1-2s would follow, then a diner or sometimes two, several more Pullmans then a bedroom/club-lounge.

Many, many lesser trains had sleeping cars at both the head-end and on the rear depending if those cars were going to be set-out to be placed into other trains. Sometimes sleepers were removed from the train in the middle of the night, en-route, and passengers were allowed to continue to occupy the car until later in the morning. The reverse was true with picking up some cars.

It really is some very interesting stuff. "Night Trains" and "The Trains We Rode" and "Some Classic Trains" are very good books describing how the huge volume of passenger traffic was managed back then.

This site has a good overview of heavyweight floor plans:

http://www.northeast.railfan.net/classic/CARdwgs4.html

Thanks for the tasty beverage, Ken! Cheers to all,

Ed

A local pharmacy still makes milkshakes, ice cream cones, and yes malts!

It's called Macdonalds Pharmacy.

It's in Jackson, Louisiana.

Ya'll should stop in sometime.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer Ed a Crown Royal and Rick and Steven what they like.

Work Front was kind of dull but in a good way. While I only had 5 customers and 3 bought for only $922.00 in new sales. I had a customer come in and pay off a $3900.00 layaway! Big Smile I think that made me a extra $200.00 in spiffs sales I will need while I am off 6 weeks for my wife knee replacment.

 Train Front

Good Got the PRR Express Reffer up and running. Installed Proto 2000 wheels it had Ick! plastic wheels. Ed what where you thinking! Whistling I tuned the trucks so they where more free wheeling and added some power graphite but I think I a little truck tuning might be in order.

Bang Head Centerfaun PRR Coach War. Added new trucks, filed down the mounting points for the trucks (using Atlas not the Brachline Trucks that fell apart) and messed with the coupler height and added power graphite so they are free swing! Gave it a test run, it be came uncopled again in the 13 foot tunnel! Whistling  I am far from my witts end as what to try next, but what does drive me nuts it ran fine for a month after I worked on it the first time.

Ed and others Would the PRR Express Reffer have 36" or 33" wheels? I used 33" and had to change the coupler height. All so where would a 10-1-4 sleeper be in a passanger train? I am thinking toward the rear, but what do I know? Laugh

Good day Folks – Since we are in a virtual Diner , I’ll have a Malt shake, they disappeared from our universe years ago…
Did someone say big chicken?

Ryan:    back! I hope you’ve found everything you packed for the move, and are settling in OK. Any mrr plans, or is it too early to say?

Ulrich:  Glad you got your rain. Hope your BP settles to a better kind of normal Angel  We’ve had just enough rain off and on to keep the garden growing without too much draw on the rainwater butts. Our temps are moderating a bit over this weekend, but set to climb later in the week.

Train Front: I’ve completed a project that has been bugging me since the layout was built. No where to store rolling stock other than the fiddle yard tracks which means the yard is jammed and trains can’t be moved in or out. So, I’ve now an under the layout table
and
Also I’ve cleaned the ballast off all the old N flextrack which has been stored for 6 years since we moved here. It’s weathered, and most pieces have feeder wires or the solder pads for them. So, some trimming and rail head cleaning, and there’s more for the Sale box.
Also keeping me busy has been the fan and motor issue for the spray booth. No replacement has come to light, so I stripped the whole thing down, found I could oil the bearings. Got it all back together and it purrs like the proverbial kitten.  Next up is to paint those passenger cars, and print off their decals.
Later…

Morning All!

Hobby Front: Getting more and more eager to get the new layout built. Working on getting details designed and built for the new yard.

Most likely I will get to get another step on getting the reworked section moved on Tuesday. Mom has consented to taking me out so that I can redo the area that I ripped out to cut the section. (Use the blender to chop up some of the paper that I removed from the lake to recover the lake.) I will also need to install a couple of new legs on the end (with levelers) and also need to figure out the car ferry yard. (I need to either shorten up some turnouts or rejig the yard to get everything to fit.)

Good Afternoon!

I would never have thought that I´d welcome rain, but I do today! About an hour ago, the sky turned black, marking the beginning of a big thunderboomer with hail at first and now rain. The temperatures have dropped a little, but not yet enough. We have all ouor windows open to let the cool air in and the hot air out. I guess it will go way into the night until we have reached my comfort zone.

Unfortunately, this is only a short interlude - the tempefrature are predicted to rise again - bah!

Chef Ryan - good to see you in here. It´s been a while, you know Big Smile

Still to hot to play with my trains, so services are suspended until further notice on my Talheim layout.

BP is at 100/50 right now and I start to feel funny. Better to lay down for a moment.

Happy times!

Good evening all.

I may not post everyday, but I at least peek in to see who's here, and so I seen....

Chef Ryan's here! Great!

Zoe - I will take the Chef's Special.

No offense meant here Vinnie, but your special always looks a bit, um, scary...

Again, no offense meant...

EDIT: And, looks like that bit me, as I got tops of the page, so, Chef Ryan's special of the day on my tab! Eat up all!

Travis - Hope the fire stays away.

Steven NWP - I never used to think a full moon brought out the weirdo's, but then I started w*^king retail, and now think that they do show up when there is a full moon.... It at least seems that way! (More of them come out for the moon, it seems!)

Car - Well, I had some JERK back into my car in the parking lot, while I was in it. I seen him shift into reverse and just start moving as I got directly behind him, and hit my horn hard, but JERK never looked still. I audibly said "You've GOT to be kidding me!" as he hit me, parked and got out of my car.

The JERK looked directly at me, then at my car, then back to me, then took off. (Like I said, this JERK was indeed a JERK!)

So I said, out loud, "REALLY!", and did the "What are you doing you idiot!" gesture of holding my arms out.

The person who was in front of me got out of her car, miffed that I had gotten on my horn, until she saw that I was looking at the JERK in the other vehicle. She then said "Did he just hit your car?" As I stood watching the JERK leave. My only response was "Yep, that JERK just did, and took off to boot!"

Only damage was a scuff on the bumper, and it knocked off the clip on the corner, so the bumper is sitting funny on that corner.

I did decide to get a dash cam before this, so did get the JERK's plate and have a vid of the "incident", but am choosing to just ignore it. It would be too much paperw*^k and too much of a hassle for the $20 (tops) in damage. (Counting both the clip and paint!)

Seeing as I had to patch a fender and repaint it, I already have the paint...

But that is NOT the way to start off a w*^k shift.....

(Hope Vinnie is ok with me calling JERK a JERK....)

W*^k - Was offered a spot at a place that is under the same company (but different franchise owner) that I used to work for, with a higher hourly rate than I am currently getting. A big plus is that he is under the same District Manager I was with before. I am debating on switching to that store. (I wasn't looking there, but the DM recommended me, and gave the owner my contact info. Along with a big encouragement to go after me, evidently.) My current boss is unaware of this, as of this posting, but will be informed soon. (If I decide to switch.) I would finish my schedule at my current employer first, so as to stay on good terms. (My current employer likes me, and I plan to keep it that way!)

The other consideration, is he already has 2 of the 3 others from that store there. (That's good, and not so good at the same time...)

He did tell me what the pay is, and what to expect bonus and spiff wise, and what the average schedule would be. (Set schedule most weeks. Hard to get in retail.)

Decisions, decisions....

While I understand that loyalty is a good thing, I also understand that sometimes you must do what's good for you, even if that means breaking that relationship.

As I said, decisions, decisions.....

Home - Rebuild of two rooms is completed, and paint is on the walls. Next comes new flooring, then a shuffle of furniture.

Then comes the removal of a wall in a different room, new paint and floor, and then I can rebuild the layout! (And have a bigger one!)

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night!

Where are you located ?

We have a fire less than 9 miles from us. 3000 acre's so far. our "Bug - out " bag's are ready for a haisty retreet ... dont know how were gonna get the pig's out . ( they weigh about 150 lbs each. Maybe "lure" them down the road, with Doughnut's ... ? ? ?  )

I live in Utah. So far the fire seems to be pretty under control near our town, and right now there are just a few remaining orange glowing spots surrounded by black burn area. The bulk of the fire fortunately moved east. However, that puts it up Middle Canyon and heading towards Butterfield Canyon were the ground is harder to fight on. For reference, those two canyons are south of the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine a few miles.

Evening diners,

Well had an interesting day today,

Driving was fun as usual, seemed like all the nutz came out the wood work today and decided to take a joyride!

The truck has got to get some work done, I was putting it in reverse when the little shift indicator needle jumped down to 2nd! Seems I has come loose so now I have to be very careful when selecting a gear.

It needs a new battery, I need the AC looked at by a mechanic (the guy we had fix it did it as a favor and was much too busy), the exhaust needs inspection I think it might be the Catalytic Converter, and I need to get the timing checked.

Finally got a new razor! I lost the charger to mine so I finally bought a new one, my face is hating me for not shaving for a few weeks! I was starting to look like a pirate!Pirate

That's about it from me!

Good Evening,

Welcome back Ryan!!  Nice to see you again.

Another nice day here, about 80F and sunny.

We lost another gold fish the other night to the racoon. It was our last one and about 10 years old. The beggar just took it out of the pond to die and didn't even eat it.  We seem to be on the racoon's nightly prowl circuit. I've seen it in the yard trying to get the bird feeders so we have to take them in every night. A bit of a pain as I get up at 5:30 to put them back out so the little birds have food for the morning.

Nothing happening on the RR front. I did run a short passenger train for a while the other day. It is the beach excursion train.

The bills are all in for Robbie's liver issue and they came to $2800. Luckily we have insurance that covered a little more than half.

Well time to head out to the mall according to my wife. It is only about a 10 minute drive so that isn't bad. I usually just wait in the car.

See you soon.

Ed are goats are to contane in a yard? With the way my backyard looks I could use a few! I am not complete kidding (no pun intended) I will add.

Kid My bench work sucks rail spike so I know that in the cause more than anything. You have to remember it was bulit as a HO Slot Car Track when I was out of work around 2006. Used pallets I found behinde a Sears Store for garden tractors. Slot cars did not care about much. While I used 3/4" plywood for the tops, did not use 16" center supports. Heck I can see section sagging, layout is making its own valleys.

I have a good diner story.  I was waiting for wifey to cook dinner and watching the Chama webcam.  The sound of the engine at the ashpit seemed quite loud and they were having a hail storm, so I turned off the sound.  It takes way longer at the ashpit that I would think.

Every now and then I turned back to the the site to look for the incoming train and all of the sudden I could smell the coal!.  I mentioned my sump pump a while ago that was turning off only for about 5 or 6 seconds.  Yesterday it ran continuously for about 10 hours.  I opened the basement door and no smoke no smell.

Walked over to the stove and the rice was turning into coal.  Shhh I'm not supposed to tell anyone.

Greetings and salutations!

Well, wrote a long text here, then it dissolved into clear magic blankness. I’ll try again....

We moved from NC back closer to home in Carriere, MS, about 50 minute drive to Bay St Louis and New Orleans where our family lives now.

Working on setting in here, lots to unpack, but we are getting closer.

Got me a lofted barn cabin we call The “Depot”, going to be the train room/office. Couple photos below, about half-way done with wall panels, then the floor and trim.

Afternoon All!

Gary Yes the PRR Coaches are coming uncoupled. What drives me nuts is two fold.

1 They will make it around the layout 10 times or so, then they become uncoupled.

2 They uncouple in the 13 foot tunnel every time where I cannot see what is going on! There are no turnouts in the tunnel, if they where picking turnouts that I could understand.

Shot in the dark (and I presume it has been checked) but, could there be enough variance in the track level at the tunnel that all the trips are working everything loose that the couplers decide to unhook right there?

Concert: As I mentioned a few days ago, I went to the Imagine Dragons concert in Bozeman yesterday night. Had a friend give me a ride up. (She was nice enough and we were early enough that she drove me over to the hobby shop in Billings for a couple of things. New turnout-easier than ordering and I don't have to worry about trying to find one from the old layout, and a package of couplers. Had wanted a station platform but they didn't have any.) I had heard that the special effects were very good and it lived up to that description. The stadium was really rocking  (In both senses of the word.) I had lots of fun at the concert. I am somewhat paying for it today. We didn't get back until about 3:45 this morning and I didn't a lot of sleep. I figured that it would be a good idea to take today off as well because of that.)

I think that that is one heck of a big CHICKEN standing on top of those kids.

That's what I thought.  But I think it's really a big goat standing in the background.

This whole topic just gets my goat.
