Ed, I was also surprised it has not been mentioned here. I joined a couple of Canadian Model Railroad Facebook sites and it has been talked about quite a lot on those sites for a few days now.

Good Day, Folks
I see the internet cables are buzzing about a Chinese factory closing that may (will) affect the production of several model manufacturers.
Here's the text from a Bowser email I recieved earlier:
I'm surprised there is no mention of it in the M-R forum. Apparently this will affect Atlas, Intermountain and a few others.
I'll stop in later when time permits.
Glad tidings to all — Ed
Heartland Division CB&QI get my exercise walking to the refrigerator. I walk at least two miles a day,
Wow. That's either a lot of trips to the fridge, or the fridge is located pretty far away. How big is your house? If I had to go that far to get to the fridge, I would have forgotten why I was going in the first place.
Hello fellows,
Excuse my absence, between early November, and up until recently, I've had much going on. School, work, and some personal stuff.
Some good news, the train collection is still here. As well as numerous automobiles, and Preiser figures. Definitely never getting rid of my PRR collection for sure. I one time considered parting with a substantial amount of the collection to fund other hobbies and interests but decided, no, I'm not doing that.
Had myself salmon, cream cheese, capers, and tomato on a "Bagel-Thin" they're about half the calories of a regular bagel. Aside model railroading, I work to do some of the healthy living and nutrition choices too, and well, can always be better at it. One thing I find helpful is making food at home over eating out or getting delivery, plus it saves $$$. If one does either of those, and I do frequently myself, the smaller-sized food options can still satiate one's hunger.
I've gotten two of my 13-classes for my Paralegal certification done, and in about 2-weeks, will have two more done, and I have three signed up for this upcoming semester. I have some paralegal work on the side doing some paperwork tasks for a local lawyer. I get paid a fair amount for under the table work I can do at home on my laptop. I've elected to try and find more substantial paralegal work in the next year or so.
Cheers,
Alvie
Good morning ...
Ulrich ..... Your layout looks like more and more fun ... You mentioned the railroad painting rails white. I think they should paint them nickel-silver. It would make a lot of layoits more realistic.
Brent ... I watched one of the videos you posted, the Sahara Railway. Interesting.
Dave .... I get my exercise walking to the refrigerator. ... Just kidding. I walk at least two miles a day, and usually more than that. My problem is an overactive sweet tooth.
Everbody .... Happy Model Railroading

EVERYWHERE LOST; WE HUSTLE OUR CABOOSE FOR YOU
Good Morning!
The short cool period is over and we are back to the hot weather again. This time it´s even worse, as the little rain we had provided sufficient humidity for me to feel even worse! I don´t know how, but somehow I will make it through the coming days.
hon30critterMy biggest problem is alcohol! I drink way too much booze.
Admitting that in public takes a lot of guts and is the first step in the right direction! Mind you, I am not a tea-totaller at all, but alcohol and my meds don´t mix well. I do enjoy a glass of wine, now and then, but more then than now!
hon30critterWhine, whine, whine. Excuses, excuses, excuses.
Yes!
I have added some green stuff to my layout, but I didn´t have the right motivation for a proper job. Heck, I don´t even knoww why I started on this, as it was too hot right from the beginning!
I will be doing some clean-up work once it gets cooler!
Happy times!
Ulrich (aka The Tin Man)
"You´re never too old for a happy childhood!"
Hi Ulrich:
Tinplate ToddlerDave, if you are serious about losing weight, than there are two things that will inevitable support your move. Eat only things you don´t like
Food intake is not my problem. I usually eat only one or two meals a day and I rarely go back for seconds if they are available. We only do dessert on special occassions when we have guests. We don't indulge in snack foods very often.
My biggest problem is alcohol! I drink way too much booze.
My second biggest problem is a lack of exercise. I bought an adult tricycle in the spring but I have only ridden it a couple of times. I have experienced two problems with the trike. One is that over time my feet have turned outward when I walk. When my feet are on the pedals my heels turn in too far so I am constantly hitting my heels on the pedal cranks. I bought a set of pedals with toe straps on them but I haven't installed them yet. My bad.
The other problem I have had with the trike is that I am having a hard time balancing it. You will ask "what's to balance? It has three wheels". The truth is that if you don't lean into a corner you might just find yourself face first in the dirt. My sense of balance is totally shot thanks largely to neuropathy in my feet and lower legs, and to ear infections when I was a kid. I don't do ladders anymore. On the trike I feel like I am constantly about to fall over when I am making a turn. I'm sure with time that feeling will go away.
Whine, whine, whine. Excuses, excuses, excuses.
Cheers!! (Maybe I shouldn't say that any more!)
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Dave, if you are serious about losing weight, than there are two things that will inevitable support your move.
If you eat only things you don´t lie, you will automatically reduce the food intake to the level your body actually needs. Just make sure it´s still a well-balanced diet.
Riding a bike instead of driving will give you the exercise you need to burn the fat your body has accumulated, build up muscle and save you a sizable amount of $$$.
maxman Now I'm allowed to drive by the Dunkin Donuts, roll down the window, and breath deeply. And that probably raises the blood surgar 25 points.
OOH, I bet that hurts!
Even the calorie counts are missleading. French toast seems pretty innocuous until you pour on the maple syrup!
I've stopped ordering bacon or sausages as a side and I feel better for it. I do indulge in BLTs occassionally but heck, it's only four slices of bacon..... oh, and the mayo! I like my mayo. I have to order extra napkins!
Cudos to all of you who have lost weight! At least I'm not gaining weight, but that is a crappy excuse for not trying to lose the extra 80 - 100 lbs that I carry around every day.
hon30critterThe Province of Ontario has recently legislated that restaurants over a certain size must show the number of calories beside each menu item.
There has been much ado made about listing the number of calories on restaurant menus. From another perspective, they should also be listing the amount of carbohydrates. This is a much more important value to anyone who has to control them due to diabetes, either with insulin or oral medication.
According to the net, there are 29+ million people in the US and 3+ million in Canada with some form of diabetes. Going into a restaurant presents a challenge to try to figure out the number of carbs in any particular menu item. It becomes necessary to take a reference book in with you and estimate every item. And then you find out that the total carbs in that one meal is more than you're supposed to have in an entire day.
For example, I used to stop at the local Dunkin Donuts in the morning on the way to a local train show. I used to have two bagels and a chocolate covered donut. Can't do that anymore. Now I'm allowed to drive by the Dunkin Donuts, roll down the window, and breath deeply. And that probably raises the blood surgar 25 points.
Tinplate ToddlerHow come that all the things rhat tase good are not healthy and all things healthy don´t taste good?
Good question! The Province of Ontario has recently legislated that restaurants over a certain size must show the number of calories beside each menu item. I think that showing the calorie count is a really great thing! During the last month Dianne and I have been forced to eat in the local restaurants every day because our kitchen and dining room were being renovated. I can tell you absolutely that being able to see the calorie count has changed my menu choices almost every day! I will admit to saying "the heck with it" and ordering poutine a couple of times just to satiate my hungerings for french fries, gravy and cheese curds, and oh, don't forget the salt!!! I also add lots of pepper to make me feel good! I fantasize that it somehow makes up for the salt! Despite those occasional guilty indulgences I seem to be choosing the 'thinner' menu options a lot.
Anyhow, the kitchen is finally back in working order! We had a great meal tonight: Boneless chicken breasts stuffed with brie, garlic and herbs with 'hassleback' baked potatos (recipe below) and a seriously garlicy caeser salad (is there any other kind?).
Hassleback baked potatos:
Partially cook your potatos in the microwave, let them cool. Then slice them crossways about 3/4s of the way through so that the slices can spread out a bit. Then put some crushed garlic and slices of your favourite cheese between the potato slices along with some chopped parsley, some butter, and a bit more salt and pepper. Turn the heat down to low under the potatos but leave the other burners on high. Leave them to brown on the BBQ for eight to ten minutes. If you are using a stove, let them bake for several minutes until the potatos are fully cooked and then broil them to make the cheese on top crunchie. YUM!
Maybe we should start a thread about recipes!?! Steven certainly likes to tempt us with photos of absolutely mouth watering dinners!
Cheers everybody!!
Evening diners... My schedule lately has been to tight. All my life has been is...wake work eat sleep... wake work eat sleep.
I hope you are all well. I am happy to report I still have not smoked. Hopefully I can join in with you all somewhere here soon.
Hope you're all well... Take care
Well, it looks like my Sister is almost home from Copenhagen. Time to hit the highway. A stop at Tims for an Icecap on the way as it is still 30c. Tops for me. Icecaps for all.

Evening diners,
Not much to report.
Had to put coolant and oil in my truck, not that it was running hot (actually closer to cool/cold) but it looked low so I topped it off.
Well I'll be around.
Steve
If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!

I know California is painting their road in Los Angeles has a test. Having the asphalt 1.65 to 5.55oC cooler by the next 20 years. Also Sydney, Australia is doing the same thing around their neighborhood that will drop it by 44F.
Thomas and friends did the same thing like Rhaetion Railway. I can't remember the episode. But I doubt their track was to bumpy.

cudakenUlrich you would love it here in Maryville ILL right now, it is a whole 65 degrees? This is July right?
Ken - that´s what we usually have here. The current temps are really the exception and not the rule.

Flo, give the gang and I Ed a Crown Royal and Rick and Steven what they like.
Ulrich you would love it here in Maryville ILL right now, it is a whole 65 degrees? This is July right? Norml low is around 75 degrees and that is around 2:00 AM. Hard to belive I just kicked on a space heater.
Ed I may have missed spoken about the wheels. I just tried a maganet on a set of Proto 2000 wheels and they did not stick to the magnet either? I do wonder what kind of metal is being used? Did not throw the wheels away, just got to find them again. Thank you for the link to Pullman Car History!
Credit Front My score finally jumped up 27 points! I really do miss having a 800 score but I now in to the good range. Depending on who scale you use.
Blood Surgar Front. For the two last days when I get up my GL level has been 122 which is high for me. Yes I know 122 is not a bad reading but I was getting use to 75 to 85 range for the last few months.
Well trains are running great, so later. Ken

BATMAN maxman BigDaddy I posted this in the weekend photo thread, but just to show you I can model even if it takes me 25 years. An oyster car? Aw shucks! Were you ever able to get the shell off?

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO
We'll get there sooner or later!
I went to an estate auction in Ocala yesterday. I made over to Ocala a bit early and had about 90 minutes to kill.
.
Just South of Ocala on I-75 is "Big Daddy" Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing. I have driven by hundreds of times and never been inside, so it seemed like a good time to check it out.
It is worth the stop. They have a HUGE collection of antique cars on display that is easily worth the price of admission.
There is also a seperate building with the museum of drag cars. This is me with Swamp Rat XXII, my favorite. This is the car Big Daddy was running when I was living in Gainesville and I would go to Gatornationals every year. AWESOME!
I have long since lost my enthusiasm for drag racing, but these old cars sure brought back some memories.
Standing on the fence as a Top Fueler goes by at 200+ under full power is quite a feeling. You can feel the horsepower in your chest.
If you are vacationing in Florida, this is certainly a great place to stop, and it is right on the Interstate. I had a blast.

Living the dream.
17 murders a year, Baltimore would love to have that few. 26 and counting for the month of July. Plus they have cease fire weekends, as if those who have no respect for human life care. I agree the too many people cause all sorts of problems, but it's more than that. Hong Kong is one of the most crowded places in the world and has one of the lowest murder rates in the world.

Brent - thanks for sharing the awesome Orca vid! I remeber how awed I was seeing a school of Orcas passing down Puget sound for the first time while on the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle. That´s 5 years ago now!

Time to get ready for bed!
CU tomorrow!
Good morning from the Pacific Rim. It is 1100hrs and we are on track for another day of hot, into the 30s.
Ulrich, I feel your pain somewhat as I can operate in the bitter cold better than I can the heat.
I came across this National Geographic video, watching it might make you feel it is not so hot where you are after all. The locomotives have modifications to deal with the sand and the heat. It is beautifully shot so enlarge it to get the best of HD that National Geo has to offer.
We are heading over to Vancouver Island this week to find a new place to live. Vancouver has had 17 murders so far this year (in 2018), that is what happens when the population grows to a point where you start to feel like rats in a cage so it is back to rural living for us. A slower pace makes people much more pleasant in my book. I have never liked urban living. The kid will likely come if his current TV shoot wraps on time. He may need to hop a flight back or we will put him on the ferry back if he gets a call.
I really enjoy the ferry ride over to the island as it goes between lots of islands on the way including a stretch called "Active Pass" where you will often see this beautiful sight as the Orca use it as one of their favourite routes as well. The Orca do the passage close to land to avoid the ferries for the most part.
The ferries passing in the pass, it is quite narrow. We use to fish there a lot and that is where we would have visits from the Orca up to our boat.
I have to pick up my Sister tonight at the airport as she is returning from Copenhagen after 3 weeks on the dog show judging circuit around Europe. She always brings me some of the highest quality booze back with her. Usually a couple of bottles of something that are native to the country she is visiting.
I see that Rapido has delayed the Royal Hudson release to 2019 now. They have this cool pic on their website. I can't wait to get mine and don't mind waiting if it means getting it perfect.
It is sitting on 2816 which was the star of "The Rocky Mountain Express".
It has smelled somewhat smokey the last few days from all the fires. It is still not as bad as last year. This pic is of the Sun through the smoke taken from the front yard last Summer. The Sun disappeared from view completely at times and everything was an orangy brown colour for days. It was very eerie, to say the least.
Ed, love the pics of all your animals, the visiting kids must be delighted when they come. Do you ever have birthing issues? I know the wife would get called out at all hours by farmers when issues would arise. Of course, I would get the punch in the arm along with a "let's go", I need your help. Made for a tired Brent at work the next day.
CN Charlie, you are smart to have pet insurance, it made my wifes job much more rewarding being able to fix an animal instead of having to put it down because the people would or could not pay the bill. Pet ownership is not free, however many never consider the true cost when getting a pet.
Well best get going, I have rambled on long enough and you are probably all alsleep by now. It is a tool fixing job this weekend. Had one of those weeks where everything breaks in the same week.
All the best to all.
If you are ever passing through Columbus, Indiana, you need to stop into ZAHARAKOS Ice Cream Parlor and Museum! The malted shakes will abolutely blow you away! You have my word. It is worth the short trip off of I-65 to get one.

Considering the weather forecast for the next couple of weeks predicting temperatures beyond my comfort zone, I´ll suggest Alaska. Or Norway!

BigDaddy I did drink Nestle's Quick
That was Nesquick at our latitude and I grew up on it! Didn´t start drinking coffee much before my 17th birthday. It started when I was moved to the States as an exchange student ( I deliberately say I was moved, as it was not my decision - today I am glad I was "mildly persuaded")!
