You don't need to remove the wood.

Or this:

I wouldn't use graphite on railheads, because there's nothing to keep the powder there. It will come off on the wheels (contributing to wheel gunk) and could conceivably get into the mechanism. Since it's conductive, that could spell trouble for electrical pickups and motors.

I’m going to try making a graphite stick by carving the wood off a carpenter’s pencil.

Hi der,

You don't need to remove the wood. All you need to do is carve a 'V' groove in the lead and then hold the pencil on a 45 degree angle (or thereabouts) perpendicular to the track. One side of the V should sit flat on the top of the rail. The other side of the V just serves as a guide to keep the pencil on the rail.

One of our newer club members showed me that trick.

I made a recent post about the Fairview Bridge with several picture, but that seems to have disappeared

It's over here:

Not much new to report, otherwise.

A good rainy day to everyone!  Rain last night filled the water butts, and more today should help the veggie garden – and what passes here as a lawn. (fortunately this isn’t a “every blade in place and a standard height” yard neighbourhood. That said, our front and back are more weeds than grass for lawns. They are hardy, and stay green – and give us flowers to enjoy as well!

Garry:
I prefer mounting couplers on the car bodies where they belong. My 2 cents.
Ah yes, in an ideal world, so would I. However, on a cramped for radius N layout, it’s just not possible to body mount couplers on longer (i.e. in this case passenger) cars. Container well cars same thing. Hence the Talgos on just about everything.

Steven:
I might just ask her what movie she wants to see.
Exactly, it’s the “servant” thing to do, and if Sarah has a head on her shoulders, she’ll appreciate you for it. (repeating Ray and Water Level Route here really, but I hadn’t read their comments when I wrote that!) When you are more sure of your relationship, and she understands you better, broaden her horizons! My 2 Cents

herrinchoker: That’s truly sad news. Our thoughts are with you all.Angel

Ulrich:
I have been away for a few days to recover from an incident that left Petra and me in a state of a deep shock…..
Thank God you were not harmed physically as well! The changes in society all over the place are disturbing –going-on-frightening. How I wish there was a quick fix for your situation. You are both in our thoughts.Angel

Terry: Please let your sisters know that this bunch of guys are wanting nothing but the best outcomes for them.Angel

Train Front: No replies yet from Kijiji on the fan and motor for the spray booth. Can’t wait that long – I’m taking the combine’s roof to the garden shed to spray it there. At least I’ll have one passenger upgrade car completed. I’ll probably end up selling the combine, but working on it was fun. I’d like to do the others in a booth as I need the turntable and better dust control for them I ‘m thinking. (as typed that thinking had no fewer than 4 “n”s! speed isn’t everything….)
Track cleaning (again! The air here seems to attract gunk to the rails - it did on the previous layout too - maybe it's the sea air?) and also loco wheel cleaning. I’m going to try making a graphite stick by carving the wood off a carpenter’s pencil. That seems to be a fairly soft (2B is recommended for this) form of graphite. Conventional wisdom suggests a thin coating of graphite improves conductivity on mrr track. I’ll try any reasonable aid to better running!
Later…

I'm not sure if it's the difference in health care, but I've been getting lots of it with my own congestive heart failure.  I really am feeling better and hoping for many more good years.

Ulrich, perhaps get yourself a nice heavy baseball bat? If you're not inclined to own a firearm a good ol' Louisville Slugger would be a good option, I would get an old TPX Louisville Aluminum baseball bat, it's heavy but light enough, and it doesn't have any give to it. That way it's there should you ever need it, hopefully you won't.

Herrinchoker, my condolances as well.  It's a hard thing to lose a child.

Mr B, I am glad you are on the mend, and Ulrich, it could have been worse.

We had a big thunderstorm roll in yesterday and drop 3" of rain.  Parts of my lawn look like straw, it has been so dry.  Other than than, everything is blissfully boring.

Prayers to Terry, MisterBeasley, Herrinchoker, and yes you too Ulrich!  I'm saddened to hear about everyone's experiences.

Steven, listen to what Mr. Otte & Howmus are telling you.  Take her to the superhero movie, unless she has already seen it.  Your movie choice comes second.  Above all, be a gentleman, and all will be fine.  Good luck!

Lion, hope you had a nice vacation.  Hopefully the sisters didn't pamper you too much.  Makes it tough to return home. Laugh

Good Evening!

I have been away for a few days to recover from an incident that left Petra and me in a state of a deep shock. Last Friday around 2am, two persons pryed the door to our flat open, in the intent to rob us while we were supposedly asleep. Luckily, I was awake and was able to alert neighbors and fend the intruders off.  One of the burglars tried to slash me with a knife, but I was lucky not to get harmed. By the time the police, alarmed by our neighbors, had arrived at the scene, both men had disappeared. They were later arrested nearby. An ambulance took Petra and me to the hospital, where  we were treated for shock. Needless to say we are still traumatized and it will take a long, long time for us to get over it, if ever. We just don´t feel safe in our own place and country any longer.

I don´t want to think of what could have happened if I hadn´t been awake.

Herrinchoker - I am deeply saddened by your stepsons Ed´s passing and Michael´s illness. Please accept our sincere condolences.

Happy times!

I haven't heard or seen of the Broadway Lion for quite sometime.... I don't read every thread so I thought maybe I could have overlooked something.

One of the posts further back in the Diner thread had some cats. I thought maybe that would rattle his cage. Apparently it didn't.

Some members a little concerned Lion! ???.Wink

The last post of him was a little over a month ago. I am not aware of any reason he might have stopped posting (he's not moderated or suspended, for instance). Someone send him a PM.

LION is alive and well, Him just been to big toy train show in Eau Clair, then went up to visit Benedictine sisters in Duluth.

I made a recent post about the Fairview Bridge with several picture, but that seems to have disappeared

Morning diners,

Herrinchoker, my condolences and sympathies for you and your family, at least he had a chance to say goodbye, hopefully you can find peace with that.

Mr. Otte, she likes the superhero stuff, I prefer action movies, I might just ask her what movie she wants to see.

Also I emailed MRs article submission email about a week or two ago and haven't received a response, it was concerning an article on the KCS Super Gondolas I'm kit bashing, I would like to write up one on the project if you guys could use it.

Super Gondola,

It ran pretty well after the club car shop guy went after it, he drilled and tapped the bolster holes and the gearbox holes, he added long shank couplers and it ran OK after that, radius will be a problem that will restrict the car to mainline and some industries, that's in part due to the triaxle trucks.

Which of you wants to see an action movie and which of you wants to see a superhero movie? Ant-Man & The Wasp was a lot of fun; in addition to the superhero action, there's a ton of humor, which is always good in a date movie. So was The Incredibles II, but since that's animated, you'd want to know if she's OK with that and wouldn't think it's a kid's movie.

I am so sorry for your loss of Ed, and I am also sorry that you are facing the same fate with Michael. Words are not adequate in these circumstances but they are all I can offer. Be strong, especially for your wife. In my experience, time will mute the pain, at least partially. It will never go away. Dianne and I lost our eldest son Glenn in 2005. He was 18.

Herrinchoker ....

i am very, very sad about your losing Ed.  Prayers for  your family during this difficult time.  ... I pray for Michael too.  Hopefully his congestive heart failure is stable or improving. The medical profession has done much to save lives of patients with that disease. I have congestive heart failure myself.  Doctors have saved my life.

MLC ... it has been a long time since I was in Kalamazoo.  That is where I attended college.  ( Western Michigan University) ... I recall it was New York Central and later Penn Central before Amtrak . I remember the city celebrated the very first Amtrak train to stop in Kalamazoo.  It had a mix of equipment lettered for PC, NYC, and PRR .

Sunday evening my step-son Ed, Crossed the Bar, woke out of a four day coma, told his mother and wife that he loved them, said good bye, closed his eyes-and went to the Lord. He was one of the finest young men I have known, and I will miss him dearly.

My other step-son, Michael, is not far behind him-conjestive heart failure. Mike started fishing with me at age 11, and by the time he was 14 could operate the family boat, Marymartha. He was quick to pick up navagation skills, net building and mending and metal work. At sea I could pass the boat operations over to him and not worry.

We should not have to bury our children----I love them all.

Evening All! Flo (or whoever's handy), I'm going shoot an unusual one at you. A Code Red float. (Mountain Dew Code Red over Vanilla ice cream.) I'm falling asleep and it's still a bit warm.

Hobby Front: The yard sections are in town! I need to attach the legs to the second section yet and the doors are sitting in my hallway. No problem for the moment. I'm the only one that uses that hallway. (Of course, I also have a bunch of hobby parts all over as a result of bringing things into town.) Of course moving things always seems to create problems until everything is organized.

I will have to talk to Mom later in the week about getting out so that i can trim the lake section on Monday. Will have to talk to Mom's friend about using her vehicle again once I get the section rebuilt.

From the "I really don't need any more" file, I bought myself yet another freight car: A Walthers Mainline Railbox boxcar. I also have one more car on the "To be purchased" file: an ExactRail Bethlehem 3483 Hopper - CB&Q: 1969 "Helvetica" HT-13D. The car is based on a car that I saw recently on the local mainline. The number of the car piqued my curosity as I could tell the car was older than me. (CB&Q reprting marks.) Through some FB help I have a line on modeling that car to fit my era.

Need to go finish assembling the yard frames. Have a good evening all!

Edit: When I glued the doors to frameworks, I discovered that somehow either the frames are crooked or else the doors aren't straight. The doors didn't quite line up on the frames. Where they don't line up, I can cover when I attach the cork sheet.

evening all,

I got back from Michigan Sunday afternoon. It was nice weather up there and I had a good time at a radio show in Kalamazoo. They show used to be at Lansing but they moved it to Kalamazoo. I camped the whole time I was there, the Amtrak between Detriot and Chicago ran by camp every day. They sure are a bike riding, kyaking, canoeing bunch in Kalamazoo.

Good afternoon ..... I'll have an RBF,  please. Perfect for a hot summer day...

Terry .... I think my Kadee wheel sets have metal axles as well as metal wheels.... I do have some wheels sets with metal wheels on plastic axles that were made by Proto 2000, and they work well. .... As long as the wheels are metal, they are fine with me.

Mr. B ! ... Wow ! .... I'm sorry to hear about your latest heart issues. .... Tell your GF Kudos from the Diner for seeing you got the medical attention. ...

Ray ..... I'm like you regarding movies. .... My feeling is Hollywood has not made a good movie since John Wayne died.

Steven NWP SWP .... Sorry,  I'm not a fan of movies. ... I wish you the best, however. ..... Glad you are taking your kitbashed gondola to the club. It is impressive.

Der John .... Looks like nice work mouting couplers on trucks. ... To me, I prefer mounting coulers on the car bodies where they belong. My 2 cents.

Afternoon folks!

Janie, a tall glass of lemonade would be great, please and thank you!

I am taking a short break from getting as many odds and ends done for the get together of the old "Fine and Practicle Arts" dept. from the Middle School next Wednesday as I can.  I have several days that will be totally filled with other things, so time is getting short to get everything done.  Drove down to Lowes this morning and got a new grill.  The old one has a worn out burner and it appears to be impossible to find a new part that will really fit it.  So, since the old one is about 12 or so years old, I guess it was time to replace it.  I figured I would have to pay extra to get it delivered, but I found the one I wanted has removable side shelves now so it would easily fit right in the back of the Volt!

Yesterday I bought a new tarp that I will set up to cover the deck for the picnic.  Weatherman is calling for Scattered Thunderboomers that day.  I case they scatter right here, the food and tables at least can stay more or less dry......  Started to set up some stuff where the food will go as well (these are a couple old plywood shelves that I saved from a metal shed I had and are set up on a couple pairs of sawbucks I have.)  One of the "tables" will also house the 3 burner camping stove I have and will be used for cooking the sweet corn....  Sweet corn is now officially in season here in the Finger Lakes as the farmers stand is now set up and filled with organic local grown veggies!!!

I need to get cleaning house and making sure the layout is up and able to be run for the picnic as well!

I'm certainly not a good one to ask!  LOL  Last movie I saw in a theater was "Grumpier Old Men"............  Now that is a great movie, but it might not make any sense to you or your friend............Whistling  That one I saw several years before you were even a twinkle in your Father's eye!  It came out in 1995..........  I don't know of anything worth seeing after that, BTW.   The new stuff just doesn't do it for me (tough having a working brain I guess. Laugh)

Oh, Mr. B, hope you make a complete recovery and will enjoy the new Woman in your life (and she you) for many, many years!  I keep hoping someone will introduce me to a lady I might like to spend some time with.................
