Afternoon All!

Hobby Front: Unfortunately Murphy struck again! The vehicle that was going to be used to transport the pieces decided not to want to cooperate! Angry I'm starting to think that some entity out there doesn't want me to get the railroad moved.

The castle is amazing! So complex

Thanks Dave - it's not finished and has been a ton of fun to do. Working out how to put the tracks through the walls (and where!) was a challenge. It's I'm sure not what King Edward 1 of England had in mind when he had the prototype built in 1296 or so.Whistling Also cutting out those Gothic windows wasn't something the model's designer thought would be done - but it makes a much more efective finish. Here's how the thing looks from the other end

and how the trin fits in the station inside the walls

I've yet to do the exterior parking lot and gift shop - maybe a hotel...Right now I'm doing awning extensions for my 3 POLA -N #300 passenger stations. Had to scratch build the supports and the roofs. I had some laser cut shingles put by from the last layout. I had planned to do this project for that layout but it didn't happen. Just shingling the final set of roofs now.

That whole station thing I'll maybe post later as I've a bunch of before and afters.

I am constantly getting the spoofed calls from robo's as well, they have even taken to spoofing local wireless numbers! It is very annoying. Unless your number is now in my phone under your name, I am also not answering anything.

Unfortunately, this is not fail safe either.  If they spoof a number that is tied to one of your contacts, your phone will bring up the contact name when ringing.  Had it happen to me a few months ago.  My phone said it was one of my wife's co-workers calling me (thought it was odd, but never know), and of course it was "Sam, from Travel Promotions."  Ugh!Angry

Most robo calls are coming form overseas anyway so fat chance to fine them.

We just don't answer ANY calls and if they are legit they leave a message.

same with cell I just blip it to voice mail.

Listing on the "Do-Not-Call" registry seems to have increased the calls!

I noticed this also.  I suspect that someone is selling this list.

There are limits to the registry. If you have had a prior business relationship, that is excluded. I believe that charities are also excluded. If the number doesn't meet those criteria, once a number is listed, I think they have 3 months to remove the number from their database or they could be fined.

Hobby Front: If nothing else goes wrong (rain on Friday and nausea - Mom's yesterday), I may finally get at least part of the layout moved today. I am planning to move the parts coming to the apartment first. We shall see what I actually get done. I really hope that Murphy decides to take the day off. I have seen entirely too much of him lately.

Good morning all.

Flo - How about a couple of those nice looking glazed donuts on the counter, along with a glass of milk. Thanks.

Ed (GMPullman) - I am constantly getting the spoofed calls from robo's as well, they have even taken to spoofing local wireless numbers! It is very annoying. Unless your number is now in my phone under your name, I am also not answering anything. And, if you call me twice without leaving a message, I am automatically blocking your number...

Maxman - I once had fun with the "Microsoft" spammers. (Where they claim your computer is sending out a virus, blah blah blah, etc...) They had called my cell, and I was expecting a call, but not from them. When they said who the "were" and why they were "calling", I got slightly irked, and then played along to get even. I first tried the "but I'm on a apple phone" but it didn't work, and when they persisted, I then asked, how to fix the issue. I let them do their spiel, but stopped them just before they said which website I needed to go to. I then asked, how they knew it was my computer with the issue. "It's registered by your IP Address" was the answer they gave.

I was "satisfied" with that answer and let them continue. (Of course, I'm not doing anything they asked, and my computer was not even on, but they had zero clue of that!) When they asked if I was able to navigate to "their website", I said "maybe, but first, if it's registered by my IP Address, that means you must have it. What is it?"

Pirate

He stammered a bit, then got defensive about not having to answer my questions. I simply repeated my question, and then added, "If you were really calling from Microsoft, you would have access to that information. Otherwise, you just proved you are a scammer."

He answered with "I'm not a scammer. And it's not like you would even know your IP Address anyway!"

(I actually do, as I had to troubleshoot an issue with it before.)

So I replied, "Actually, yes, I do know it. So, the real question is, do you?"

He simply hung up on me.... And I then blocked that number in my phone, although, if it wasn't spoofed, I really don't think he would be calling me back anyway....

SteveO - Thanks for bring the donuts this morning. Wink  And thanks for helping keep everything civil in the forums. It is appreciated, but not mentioned enough. So, Thanks!

Ken - Yep, it's amazing how quickly we accumulate rolling stock without even realizing it. And yet, we can always use more!

Weather - Sunny and nice today, but the guessers call for rain tomorrow, and very hot and humid conditions to follow.

W*^k - I have decided to stay where I am, only because I am unsure of why the other place is so desperate for help. And, they did just move me to a new department recently, so that came with a pay raise...

House - Remodel project is progressing at a pretty quick clip, which is nice.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

We don't pick up the phone at all anymore.

We normally don't, either.  But we have caller ID, so when I see an area code such as 80 I will answer.  I will say "you have reached Buttkiss Security, how may I help you?".  I enjoy the confused stammering that usually follows.  And if they continue, then I ask them for their 11 digit security code.  That makes them go away.  Might as well have some fun with them.

By the way, if you get your phone service from Verizon and have FIOS, there is a way to get a menu on your TV screen where you can enter and block phone numbers that are used continuously to annoy you.

So, basically, the entire caller ID system is trashed if anyone can hack the number and fake it. Consumer protection in the U.S. has nearly eroded completely. Listing on the "Do-Not-Call" registry seems to have increased the calls!

What we need is the ability to forward every robocall to each of our local, provincial (or state) and national political representatives!

The phone has been ringing every 1/2 hour.  Almost all calls from small towns in Maryland.

Robocalls and caller ID Spoofing has become rampant in the past few months. We get "local" calls all the time that the caller ID shows a phone number from our exchange but is obviously from far away.

We don't pick up the phone at all anymore. Leave a message and we will call back. Even if the number is familiar, we still screen the calls.

Two weeks ago we got a message on our machine from a woman in South Carolina. "Please stop calling me and hanging up" was her plea. We never called her. Obviously, spoofers are using our number to make robocalls to others.

Ulrich do you have robo calls in Germany?

Not that I know of! They are illegal and since that law was passed, a couple of businesses  have been sued into oblivion!

The phone has been ringing every 1/2 hour.  Almost all calls from small towns in Maryland.  Verizon has a new thing, which they never announced, called NOMOROBO.  You have to sign up for it.  Calls still ring once. Which is what they did today.

The spoofers, calling from every local exchange have rendered call blockers impractical.  Ulrich do you have robo calls in Germany?

My ex-wife and I went to France an Great Britain two years in a row, in August.  Both times the weather was great!!!

We vowed to go to Europe once a year, thereafter, but as she was preggars with our second in England, and we never went again.  Your complaints of humidity have disabused my notions that it was crazy to leave Europe for the stinkin humidity of the colonies.

A friend of mine made me a Baltimore Truss Bridge.  What we discussed, is not quite what he built, but it doesn't matter, because his skill set is far above mine.  I also asked him to call me when he was working on it.  He called me when it was finished. Too bad, it would have been a great MR article, but apparently his techniques are secret.     See my thread in Layouts.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, The gang and I will have a Beer please and give Rick and Steven what they like.

Had a long post last night about 300 plus words. Hit send and got a error screen and it was lost! Bang Head Short verson Congrats on the golden spike and 2 weeks smoke free Track Fiddler.

GL has been very good lately but this moring just a little to good at 45? So for breakest I had 3 eggs, sauges pattie, bacon and 2 pices of whole wheat toast. That breakfest kicked my butt and did not feel like doing a darn thing the rest of the day. If my meter is right my 30 day avg is a 5.3.

Pleasent Surprises Today. Made a payment on my Discover Card and found Discover gave me a $1700.00 increase! Big Smile That should help my credit score by 21 points!

Train Front, where did all this Rolling Stock Come From? I did a count Sunday and I have 213 pices of rolling stock on the layout? Town looks more like a hum yard with out the hump? Whistling Plus I know I missed a few when I did the count. I all so have 105 cars boxed up and have not seen them in 3 years or so. I am pretty sure I have another 50 or so under the layout and in my Snap On Tool Box! Seems like just a few years ago my goal was 100 rolling stock. Ok, guess it was more like 10 years ago. Odd thing, I would not mind more! Laugh

 Later, Ken

Thanks Ulrich, I have an Imgur account - but found that their logo plastered itself over the bottom of my photos - where most of the interesting parts of my photos tend to be. So i gave that up. Evidently this doesn't happen to other Imgur users (your goodself?), so that was one reason besides not being able to log in why I dropped away. I'm going to go to my Imgur account and see if I can post in here without the logo. Here's how that tourist destination castle turned out, and its relation to the track. Tourist castle. Nope, that's not working either via the icon or the "Insert image" route using the url copied from the image in my Imgur account. So, what I wonder am I doing wrong.... Trying again with the url copied from the image in my Imgur Album, see if that is any different...

bingo - and thanks also for the Photos How To sticky at the top of the GD Forum Page re the "if it doesn't have .jpg it's still on a webpage" tip. OK, so now I'm good to go.... and no Imgur logo intruding, Cool

John - good to see you here again!

If you want to post photos here, you need to have them stored at a picture hosting site. I am using Imgur, which is easy to handle - very similar to the old Photobucket. Once the picture is uploaded to the hosting site you can copy and paste the BB code here and the picture will appear in the post. There is also a sticky post by Steven O. on top of this forum.

My wife is still smoking

So is my dear Petra. It´s quite challenging not to tell her how revolting the stale smell of cigarettes is - just to keep the household peace. I wish she would quit smoking as well, but there is no way I can make her do that, if she does not have the will on her own.

... I know what you mean, and it brings back memories  of the time at school when I told the assistant head master, a pipe smoker, just how disgusting his breath smelled. It did not go well with me since those were days when corporal punishment was normal, and his weapon of choice a razor strop cut in a deep V. "Happy Days" NOT!

When you start out your post with a comment along the lines of "Forum rules prevent discussing this topic, BUT," ...maybe don't make that post? That way I won't have to come in later and delete a bunch of stuff.

Okay? Big Smile

Good Afternoon!

A rather dull day here and I feel a little depressed. I am still tryimng to find ways of improving our lives, but whichever way I look at it, there seems to be no way. It´s either a lack of money or my bad health keeping us from making the move to "greener pastures".

Evening diners,

Right now I'm watching the old Magnum, mowed the grass yesterday and today, had to replace the discharge chute that was on there with a new one, I made both from scrap sheet metal, I might have to tweak the new one some to get it right, glued the seat cushion back on, did some tilling this afternoon, there's a bald spot in the lawn that won't grow so I tilled it up put some Scott's topsoil down and seeded with all purpose forage grass, why forage and not turf grass? Well the spot is in full sun and the forage is all they had that is sun resistant.

Tomorrow is work again, I tell ya I am enjoying the blue collar work, my dad is what I'd call a faded blue collar, what I mean by that is he will do physical labor when needed but the most part he's a desk jockey, my Grandpa Ward was blue collar, worked for ConEd as a meter man, and a lot of the Ward men were blue collar, my Grandpa Dinnean was a pipefitter, my Paw Paw Covington was a Boilermaker, (my mom's parents are divorced and remarried) most of the Bradleys were blue collar. I enjoy being on the move, I'm earning a reputation at the hotel for being quick, I go looking for work, sweep the apron of the parking lot, done, go put air fresheners in the PTAC units in the vacant rooms done, in under 30 minutes I may add.

Anyways, now that I am earning a paycheck I'm thinking of all the things I'm going to start being able to afford, I'm going to buy a rowing machine (I'm not into the whole gym membership thing, too many machines to choose from!) A car, as in a nice car, one you can take a girl out in and make a good impression. Trains of course, some SD40s, 45s, and maybe some 50s to start, perhaps a AC-8 sometime in the future. A new phone and computer. Parts for the 69' Mustang. A new lawn mower. A garden tractor, or a real tractor the previous would be more sensible, John deere 140, a few mods to make it look more like a 4020 "new generation" tractor, a few implements like a plow and stuff. Of course I don't have a time line for any of it, and I figure I won't get it all till after college, but hey a man can dream!

Anyways I better hit the sack, gotta get up early!

I went to Syracuse Friday so I could photograph trains on a busy mainline.  I wasn't ready for the ridiculously long trains CSX is running these days -- I'd hate getting stuck at a grade crossing!

Track fiddler

I'm the only one breathing well and replying to this thread right now.

Yes I am. I just wanted to point out how much the music of Johnny Cash changed our lives. Johnny had a simple beat. So simple in fact it blew the minds of the music Industries producers. Every song he produced sounded like a steam engine working hard.

So I propose when it's Johnny Cash's birthday or Johnny Cash's death date. We all stop and take a deep breath.  A moment of silence is warranted.

We will gather our thoughts. There was never anyone In Our Lifetime like Johnny Cash.... Wink
