Evenin' folks!
Been getting a lot of stuff done today, like mowing the lawn, weeding and watering garden (had my first two radishes tonight in a salad...), putting up a bird feeder my son in England sent me for Father's Day), and taking some old electrical powered stuff (a pair of old HEPA filters, a worn out sump pump, the ampliferier camp staff destroyed a couple years ago, and my old B&D Battery Electric Lawn Mower) to a recycling place here in town. Oh, and figuring out how to best handle and calm down some folks on the committee of one of my Scout Units that appears to be self destructing at the moment.... Seems everyone hates everyone else.......... Too many bosses and not enough workers, I would say. Kinda reminds me of the old Joey Chittwood Thrill Show routine where half way through the show a tiny clown car arrives with about 8 clowns inside. They get out (and out, and out) and then start pointing to parts of the car. The announcer says, "What's that? Oh the Starter don't Start, the Lights don't light, the carburator doesn't carb, and the piston's...... Oh, they don't work either!"
Ken, your daughter sounds like a wonderful lady! A good reflection on you and yours!
Hmmmm, Steven, good luck on the "Date"... I am trying the same technique on a couple different ladies I wouldn't mind linking up with myself...
No work again today on the layout....... I do have to clean house before I spend any more time down there..... LOL

That´s not quite correct, Garry. My post did not at all pertain the topic which you have in mind. It concerned the freedom of travel within the European Union.
Anyhow, this place has changed so much in recent years , but not to the better. Maybe that´s the reason why so many of our long time friends have decided to stay away, a decision which I fully understand, given the current moderation.
Happy times!

Well, Ulrich ..... I myself had no problems at all with your post, but it was followed by comments which digressed into the topic of immigration. .... I am still sorry to hear from you about the attempted theft and your health problems . .... I'm sure all the Diners think of you as a very good friend, and we don't want to hurt your feelings. ... I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Hey all.

Good day diners,
Worked half a day today, there weren't any maintenance requests and I had finished everything else earlier this week, so my dad told me to go ahead and punch out for the day.
I've got some yard work to do so I'll be keeping busy.
Steve
If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
Good morning from a very cool West Coast. It is 15c with a high O/C.
Steven Otte thankyou for reaffirming the obvious. I came in happy yesterday and did not stay.
Jimmy, I hope dealing with your Dads estate is not an arduous one. I am executor for quite a few people and it has been an educational experience I'll tell ya. The bloodsuckers really can show up fast. I had one group so bad, I turned the whole thing over to a lawyer and the courts and the greedy beneficiaries lost half the estate to legal fees. When my Mom died my sister and I had it all wrapped up in no time with no issues between us at all.
I am the executor of a 97-year-old American lady that has lived in Canada for the last fifty years. I will have to have legal help in dealing with that one as I bet both the Canadian and American Governments will want a chunk of her estate. I know what to expect from the Canadian Government and they will be wanting very little, however, I have no experience with U.S. estate law. I already have people in place to help when the time comes.
I won a brass Great Northern 4-6-2 in an auction for $36.00 and apparently, it has arrived at the Post Office. I figure it will be my first experience at painting a brass engine. Great Northern operated North of the border and so it should be fine on my layout. The story will be that Great Northern contracted out emergency repair work to the C.P.R. and that is why it is in the C.P. yard at the roundhouse.
Ken, give your daughter a big hug and thank you from me for her kindness. You obviously did a good job bringing her up. My son gave I think it was $80.00 in food vouchers to some new Canadians on a layover at Toronto International airport. He said they were obviously on a budget and they were really grateful. He talked to them for quite a while and found their story quite enlightening.
Starting to get ready for the Big Canada Day five night camping trip next week. We have a big group going this year and those are always fun. We have 20 to 30 around the campfire and read really scary stories from the really scary storybook for campers. There is no phone, power or internet service unless you want to drive a long way. People actually spend the whole time doing things together. We have had some friends that say they really want to be part of it until they learn there is no internet. Their loss as far as I am concerned, they are going to miss a whole lot of guitar playing and singing.
Mr. B, I am glad to see you out and about again. I consider you one of the old-timers around here and wonder where you have gotten to when you disappear for a while.
Big Daddy, I really enjoyed your video of the Hillbillies. I watched the whole thing and it sure took me back, it was a favourite in the sixties.
There is a bit of a hiatus in the film industry that happens every June so the kid has his feet up for a well-deserved rest, though a casting director was talking to him several times yesterday. He did well in the screen test and the part he had likely landed for a movie in August was pushed back to the fall so now he can't do it as he will be in Ottawa at school. We were at a big family wedding and lots of people were telling him they saw him in Deadpool, it was quite funny to watch.
He picks his course load next weekend for school and he is more determined than ever to steer away from international public service after having a taste of dealing with the politics of it all. It is too bad as he is a very capable kid. Digital/entertainment law is his new direction. He will do well in it.
Well, I have a pile of dirt to move, about three yards worth so that is the job of the day. Ken dinner for you and the Mrs. is on me tonight with a Limo ride home to boot, so drink up and enjoy.
All the best to all.

Just got my first spam phone call from Tonga. I did not pick up. Tonga is south of Fiji and east of Guadalcanal.
Acer sent my laptop back. They found a loose monitor cable. It can connect to my wireless network, but it doesn't see my desktop or printer. My decrepit HP laptop can see all 3 computers but can't see files from the other two. The desktop can also see all 3 but it can only read files from the HP. All the network/share settings look the same to me.

Wife is trying to give me a heart attack. Long story but here it goes. Sparkie The Rocket Dog came from a American Eskimo Rescue when it was 10. What we did not know was he had health problems. At age 14 he is now blind and deaf but we love just the same and he is the sweets dog we have ever owned.
Took him to the vet today because he has peed our bed twices. The Vet that could see him was not the one my wife wanted to see him. This Vet has hurt our daughter dog twices. I don't know if it was the Vets fault or the dogs but wife would not hear of her seeing Sparkie. His temp was normal so they thought there was no infection.
Just a little while ago my wife came out screaming Sparkie Won't Wake Up! I jumped up and was heading for the bedroom ready to take him to the Vet! When I got there he was just waking up and seems OK now. But it had me worried, I don't think he will be with us for another 2 years.

Sheesh, Steven, I looked at that top photo and wondered what you were doing in my old college stomping grounds! When I was at Eastman School of Music I worked 3 summers for Rochester Telephone Company (now absorbed into one of the huge conglomerates). The building next door to one in the photograph was bought by the telephone co. and the second floor was being converted into an office space and the lower floor used as a truck repair and storage (It was used as that for Genesee Brewing Co. as well previously). I was the grunt using a large and heavy drill to bore through about 6" of concrete to put in the 25 pair cables for the phone service most of that time. I had to stand on a 12' tall step ladder with one foot on the next to the top step and the other foot over on the brace on the back side and hold the drill over my head to drill through the concrete. More than once I almost fell off the ladder.... I was not happy with the assignment. Today the company would be breaking all kinds of safety codes to have me do that. Only good part of that job was that on break the crew could walk across the roofs to the bottling plant and get all the free beer we wanted as long as we got it out of the line before it was tax stamped..... Uh.... that might have been one of the reasons for my "almost" falls.... LOL
I got in 20 laps over at the fieldhouse this morning. That is 3.7 miles! Not too bad for an old guy with arthritis in my right hip.... My new goal is to end up walking 22 laps. That would be 4 miles in the outside lane I use. Back just a few months ago I couldn't finsh a mile, so I am pleased with the progress. A gent who I see over there almost every day I go stopped me with a couple laps to go and asked how far I put in. We have said hi several times but not really had time to talk. Last week he was doing his last lap winding down and I actually passed him. As I did I said, WOW! Never thought I would get to pass you..... He puts in 17 laps (3 miles) but runs half of the time and then walks for a bit. Told me he is 78 years old and was hired to be a personal trainer for an older lady who does about the same distance now. I thought they were a couple as the two of them end up walking and running together. I think the gent was a Physical Education Teacher. I have seen him working out over there off and on for the last 20 years (when I would be struggling to make a few times around the place). He said he plans to get up to 20 laps soon. Also very encouraging to me. Said he has seen a lot of improvement in how I'm doing and told me to keep at it!

Alrich is a Kingpin to this Forum. He has been for many many years.
When I joined this Forum Alridge was there.
Earlier before when I was just reading and not posting Alrich was there.
Alrich is very important to all of us and always will be. And he darn will be posting on these forums for a long long time after this post!....Just because I say so........... Track Fiddler
Track fiddler, I believe Alrich's name is Ulrich, with a U not an A, I may be wrong!

Yeah you will be alright. Tough work week I put in..... I'm tired.
Whatever. Just trying to be a little sentimental here and I get beat up.
I meant every word I said just spelled the name wrong.
Human error crap happens. I'm sure Ulrich appreciates what I'm saying.
I meant it from my heart, give me a break, I'm going to bed....... later days
Track fiddler, I apologize for sounding rude, I did not mean it that way at ALL, sorry it came across wrong!
My bridge is done with the exception of the 150-180 gusset plates. I haven't counted yet.

Let's see, 180 gusset plates x 40 or 50 rivets per plate - that means you only have +/- 8000 rivets to install!!!
Seriously, the bridge looks great! Well done!

Actually, Track fiddler´s accidental misspelling of my name is not that far off.
Ulrich is an old Saxon/German name which has seen quite a number of different spellings over the centuries. Differences also occur in the various regions where the Saxons and other Germanic tribes settled. While Ulrich is the "modern" German spelling, the Anglo-Saxons know the name as Alrich, Aldrige, Alaric or Aethelric. About a thousand years before the "Mayflower" set sails for the New World, the name´s spelling included also Odalric, Udalrich and Adalric and, finally, Ulrik.
The meaning of the name is said to be "of noble power".
In the 1950s and 1960s, the name Ulrich was among the more popular names for boys, but that has changed. It is now regarded to be "too German" and is completely out of fashion. My parents found it suitable for a little baby boy that later grew into a 6´5" tall, friendly giant with blond hair, a reddish beard and steel-blue eyes. The blond hair is mostly gone and the red beard has turned grey. Only the color of the eyes remains.

Oh my, a real handsome dude eh!?! I better not tell my wife or she might be buying a one way single ticket to Hamburg!
Cheers Ulrich!!

Only in my younger days, Dave! Now that the sixpack has turned into a lifebelt, the hair has receeded into oblivion and my poor old motor has a glitch in the git-along, the term "handsome" is nothing but a memory of days long gone by.
OK, I have to spill the beans! The Barrie Allandale Railway Modellers Association is very close to completing the mainline loop on our new layout. To honour the occassion I have ordered an HO scale Golden Spike to be installed just before the first lap of the mainline is completed. In truth, it will be gold plated silver but let's not sweat the details. I have also ordered a small brass plaque that will show the date of the event. I'm hoping that everybody gets a kick out of the ceremony. Unfortunately, club rules don't allow alcohol on the premises, but I might just break the rules!
When I first saw your neat, curved bridge, I was immediately reminded of the Massillon, Ohio, bridge that carries the PRR Pittsburgh - Fort Wayne main line over the Tuscarawas River and the Ohio & Erie Canal.

I love bridges, I especially love curved bridges! Nice work! Bravo.
My dad and I once belonged to a railroad club that held some of their meetings in the Massillon depot and we would visit this bridge to "see the action"— which was plenty back in the late 1960s!
Congratulations on your Golden Spike Ceremony, Dave!

Let's just say that you and I have aged "gracefully".
I have to tell you that I now am really happy when the lawn is being cut! Up until now my back has made cutting the grass a really uncomfortable ordeal, but now it happens all on its' own! Our arbourist recommended a lawn cutting company and I am very happy to report that they do excellent work. The owner is a real gentleman, and he has been in the business for a long time. I am so relieved that I won't have to suffer the pain of cutting the lawn any more!
What's even more interesting is that this guy (Chris) races cars! He was telling me about his adventures, including the fact that he blew his only engine (small block Chevy V8) in his last race. He doesn't have a spare so he is hoping that it can be repaired before the next race. When he sends me the monthly bill for the lawn cutting I think I'll add in a little extra to help pay for the repair.
