i got my new BLMA drill guides in the mail today. That was prompt service. They're tiny little things, but I suppose they're supposed to be. I don't know if Kalmbach allows us to plug our suppliers, but it was a train guy.

I've been looking for that item.  If you got them from a commercial vendor, how about letting us know where?

Thanks

Good evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have an Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

i got my new BLMA drill guides in the mail today.  That was prompt service.  They're tiny little things, but I suppose they're supposed to be.  I don't know if Kalmbach allows us to plug our suppliers, but it was a train guy.  I am pleased.

Kevin:  That looks like a very interesting restaurant.  I'm a big fan of Mexican food and then to put it in a diner car.  How could one lose with that combo.  Dig the carvings on the back of the booths.  Nice reliefs and colorful too.  We never had a problem getting good Mexican out west, but back here in what I considered the east growing up it can be a challenge.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is ok, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

2 Seem the clothes dryer has died! Only have had it maybe 2 years?

3 Steven Getting Old Sucks! Ok, second trip to the post offices to mail the package! Made a new lable with your name on it this time. While I wrote PO on the lable I forgot to write the PO Number! Bang Head

Little Good News Seems BLI I has recived the decoder from the Bessemer SD 7. Hope to have Thundering Tennis Balls with in the week!

A couple days ago my wife and I stopped in Rocky Mount, North Carolina for our dinner break.

.

We found a Mexican restaurant named "LA PERLA TAPATIA", and what an unexpected treat it was.

.

We entered from the "far side" of the restaurant, so we had no idea part of the eating area was in a real dining car!

.

To top it all off, the food was reasonably priced, potions were beyond generous, and the entire staff was as friendly as they could be. What a lucky stop.

.

Afternoon folks!

Just checking in after having a great lunch with a lovely lady....  I think we both enjoyed the hour and a half we spent together.  I don't think anything will progress on this as we have different needs in the future....  She will be retiring in a couple years and will be moving to the midwest (back home basically) to be close to family.  Since my family is here, we both agree our families need grandparents nearby (for the sake of the grandparents...).  I do think we have become good friends and may get together at some point to talk again.  It was a fun and well spent lunch time!  She is responsible for my finally making some good decisions for my life, and she told me that several people have mentioned to her recently how much better and happier I look.

My new Dumbbells should be arriving late this afternoon, so I plan to get started doing some upper body training tonight.  The lady I was with at lunch told me two of her doctors have told her she should do some weight training as well.  Recent research has shown that people who work out have a reduced chance of developing demenia (that runs in both our families).  So, I guess I am doing some of the right things now.

Good Morning,

Ray, exciting news out your way! I hope everything goes well on your 'date'.

Yesterday we went to the gym and while I didn't do 3 miles like Ray, I did manage 2. I did it non-stop in 40 minutes or so which isn't bad considering I do have short legs. I have found that I have shrunk a little so instead of being 5'7" I am now nearly an inch shorter. Those legs have to faster than ever. I have a very light build, as in 145 lbs., so that does help somewhat.

My visit to the docs yesterday revealed that I probably have arthritis in my jaw joint which is causing the pain around my ear. He took x-rays to confirm. Oh joy. At least the pain is largely gone now. I'm not liking this getting old much.

I looked on the Altas site and they are coming out with a GP7 run shortly. One of the roads is the TH&B ( Toronto Hamilton &  Buffalo) which I have always thought would be fun to model. It was owned jointly by CP and NYC but did interchange with CN so I suppose one of their GP7s might find itself on my southern Ontario sub. It is fictional anyway. TH&B had some interesting steam too as in a couple of ex-NYC Hudsons and they also had the only Berkshires in Canada. They were smaller than  those in the U.S. Division Point did a beautiful model of it a couple of years ago but you are talking close to 2 grand for a copy now so there won't be one on my road.

Time to get out and do a few errands today.

CN Charlie

I have said this many times: We don't know what a hard day's work is!

Oh, you mean like a stoker on the Titanic? Puddler in a steel mill? Breaker boys? Swinging a pick-axe at the Panama Canal?

I'm struck by the same thoughts especially when I watch the documentaries of the industrial revolution (with my remote in one hand and a chilled drink in the other Whistling) Yeah, we got it rough these days.

The least I can do is raise a glass to the labors of our forebears. How'd you like to get up every morning and do what Fred Dibnah does for a living!

I get wobbly going up a sixteen foot ladder... and some of these angle backward Indifferent at the overhangs!

If you fancy the time, look at more of Fred Dibnah's work shown at Youtube and other places. Quite a lad!

I was in university in the late 70s and IIRC the record was quite old at that time.

Aah! I'll bet this is the fellow. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaster_Bates

I got the little wire stripper today Smile . This thing is great! I'm stripping everything in sight. You should see the cat's tail!

Really, for tiny wire this thing is excellent.

The steeplejack would show up in the morning, carry his lunch pail up the ladder and sit on the planks chipping the bricks away and throwing them into the smoke stack.

Just being able to climb that ladder and still have enough energy left to do some work is amazing enough, but to devour that chimney in two weeks is incredible! I have said this many times: We don't know what a hard day's work is! My ancestors cleared and farmed about 150 acres of bush in Painswick, Ontario in two years starting in 1823 ('cleared' is a relative expression, it took much longer to get the stumps out). At the same time they built the first rough corduroy road from Bradford to Painswick, 35 miles - it was by no means straight, all they did was basically fill in the mud holes, but it was a huge improvement over the muddy trails that existed before that.  During the same time frame they hauled freight with their team of oxen from Painswick to Georgian Bay for the military! Sounds unbelievable but it is true. I get exhausted just thinking about it!

It's too long ago to remember his name. I googled 'Jimmy Correa' but didn't get anything that would go back far enough. I was in university in the late 70s and IIRC the record was quite old at that time.

Evening diners,

I think we're almost in Vicksburg by now what'd ya say we disembark from the ferry and resume our tour via rail? Where to next here in the south? Any suggestions?

I went to the club yesterday, a guy brought and ran his BN Empire Builder consist, the cars were all still in GN Big Sky Blue and retained their GN reporting marks, the motive power was two SDP45s (possibly Dash 2s) also in Big Sky Blue but with BN reporting marks running elephant style, it was quite a sight had the cars not derailed as much.

Ed, thanks for the video of the tower in Denmark going the wrong way.

Glad to share. This just happened a few days ago. They should have known not to try a job like this on a Monday morning Embarrassed

We did things in a less dramatic way at GE. The steeplejack would show up in the morning, carry his lunch pail up the ladder and sit on the planks chipping the bricks away and throwing them into the smoke stack. A gang would haul the bricks out of a little access hole at the bottom.

Took about two weeks but he got it done. Not as much fun as TNT but it was a little safer.

Was your man Jimmy Correa, Dave?

I can appreciate what you mean about the comedian/storyteller. I knew a few fellows that could "spin-a-yarn" and have you rolling on the floor in no time.

Somehow I think that charm is going to fade away with the increased use of "Twitter" and, well — e-forums like this. A sad price to pay, IMHO.

Cheers, Everybody!

Ed, thanks for the video of the tower in Denmark going the wrong way.

One of the funniest comedians I have ever heard was an Englishman whose day job was demolishing old industrial chimneys. All he did was describe several 'instances' where things didn't go according to plan, but he did it in such a way that it was gut splittingly funny! I can't remember his name. It was a long time ago (university). One of the funniest incidents was one where he was called in to finish a job that someone else had botched. This huge industrial smoke stack was laden with explosives that had only partially detonated, leaving a huge hole in the side but the chimney still standing and the unexploded charges in who knows what condition. How he could turn such a dangerous situation into something hilarious was amazing. I wish I could remember the details. Google came up with lots of chimney failures but not what I was looking for. Maybe some of you real oldtimers might remember the comedian I'm talking about.

Henry ... Thanks for posting the dramatic video of the bridge demolition here this morning. .... While watching you can see where our bay connects with the main lake in the background in the right side of the view at 36 seconds; 1 min. 24 sec., and 2 min, 36 seconds. The old bridge was on the south side of the new bridge.

We have crossed the old bridge numerous times over the years. It was challenging to be towing the boat while meeting an oncoming large tractor-trailer truck on the old, narrow bridge. .

I noticed You Tube gave a link to watch the old Kentucky Lake bridge being demolished a year or two ago.

A four lane highway ( US 68 / KY 80)  is under construction on the east end of the Barkley bridge to run east through Cadiz where it connects with I-24, and also heads eastward. It will replace an old two lane road. West of the Barkley bridge already has a new 4 lane road going west through Land Between the Lakes and across the new Kentucky Lake bridge.

Ed .... Regarding the Denmark video..... OOPS !

CN Charlie .... Yes, GN did run its E7's to Winnepeg. They also had a train on the West Coast going up to Vancouver that sometimes had E7's

MLC .... I doubt you could have felt the explosion that far away. ... It certainly was loud here. The Paducah TV station had very good coverage as the explosion happened, and I think they still have videos of it on their web site. ...

This is from the work site camera showing the remains of the old brdge.

YES!!!

Ahem...  Did it!  Walked 3 miles over at the fieldhouse today. Took me an hour and a half from the time I walked in to when I walked out the door and includes the 17 minutes or so I rested.  Did 7 laps first, rested, then did 6 more, rested again, and then 4 more to make 17 laps which is exactly 3 miles on their track!  Two and a half months ago a half mile or so and I was shot!  Now to cut the time down a bit....

Currently 46°F under mostly cloudy skies here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS.  Supposed to be rainny and cold all day tomorrow....  Glad I didn't decide to grab a couple subs and take the lady over to the FGLK Yard and watch trains tomorrow....Whistling  One of my old friends here who is also a train nut had one of his suggestions to me as just that.......  I took his first suggestion which is also a place she likes. Big Smile

Have a great day out there!

Evening All!

cudaken

No such thing as a straight 2"X4"!

If one does it right (and has enough patience), you can find straight lumber of any size. (I had to go through quite a few 1"x4"x16' to find six that were acceptable. However don't get me started again on the 2x2s.)

Hobby Front: Finally got the lumber cut for the yard expansion. (All done with my Dad's radial arm saw.)

These three show all the lumber (1x4 and 2x2s) I purchased plus a small 2x2 scrap that I had. (I think it was left over from when I built the expansion that allowed me to complete the wye for the tourist road and extend the mainline and industrial track are.) With that scrap, it gives me enough for 4 additional 36" long legs. (The stack with different size pieces of 1x4 is the leftover 1x4 from all the cutting.) One piece will end up going back through the saw to get trimmed to final length and 45s on both ends.

This is the two doors for the yard and the plywood for the corner piece.

Step one of the section process. The clamps are a very old set of Craftsman corner clamps that my Dad bought. (How old I don't know.) I now keep them up with my layout. This is 80" tall by 28" wide to fit the closet doors.

Frame with all braces installed. The braces are built 16" OC. Both of these are from the first section. I ran out of time this afternoon to finish the second. Ironically enough, the second frame looks exactly like this picture except the holes to start the screws and the screws themselves haven't been installed on the top braces where the clamps are. The corner section still needs to be built. (I didn't start with that one as I had forgotten to print out the assembly diagram so that I could remember what piece went where. Embarrassed I could do the regular ones are they were simple to remember.)

Off to bed as I have to work early in the morning. Zzz

Good Afternoon,

Garry, those E units certainly are nice looking locos. At first I thought I had never seen one as in Canada only CP had a few they ran in the east but then I remembered seeing GN units when they ran a train from Minneapolis to Winnipeg. I ran the RS3 again today. It is my only road diesel. I  had a couple of other BMan  road units but sold them. They ran well but the paint colours were all wrong. The green was far too dark and so was the yellow. I would like to get another GP7 or 9 but so far Atlas hasn't come out with one in my colours.

I'm off to see the Doc tomorrow morning. I think I might have a bit of an ear infection as my jaw 'hinge' on one side is sore and so is my ear. It is better than it was a couple of days ago but I better get it checked. I've had problems with the ear on my right side before with the tubes filling up.

Ray, good luck with the lunch date. I think there is a new spring in your step.

Nothing planned of note this week. The weather is supposed to warm up to normal temps by next week which means about 50F.

Good afternoon all.

Zoe - I will take a RBF, please. Thanks.

Weather - Cool, and a bit of snow last night. Grey and dreary today...

W*^k - Went late last night, we are prepping for inventory this weekend. Schedule was till 11pm, didn't leave till 1245am. But, everything is prepared now.

Combine that with the dreary day, and I'm feeling ZzzZzz.

Trains - Assembling a industry building, it's a rail-truck transfer facility for sand. The prototype I'm basing it on is located on a shortline railroad nearby, and was being used for Frac sand for Marcellus Shale drilling. The rail road was hauling in sand in 2 bay covered hoppers, some from fallen flag lines. (I have seen everything from CSX former Chessie patchouts, CNW, ATSF, BN, CSX former Family Lines, and NW hoppers there, along with new NS, BNSF, CSX, UP hoppers.)

To facilitate easier moving, I will be building it on a piece of craft plywood, with cork mounted on it. This will allow it to remain assembled during any upcoming transport. (Remember, I will be moving, but it has been pushed back for a year or so.)

This will also allow me to fully scenic the scene and allow it to be blended into both my current space, plus the new layout.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

Always believe in yourself, and be confident you will have a great future.

Garry, that is good advise for all of us!  I am now believing in myself in certain ways that I gave up on 20 years ago!

Chloe, can I get a refill for the decaf, please?  Thank you Ma'am!

Well, well, well..... Big SmileBig SmileBig SmileCool  I spent about 10 minutes chatting with a certain lovely lady in her office this morning........  I now have a time and place down to have a long lunch with her on Thursday!!!!  BTW, this is the lady who told me to get rid of the Beard some months ago.  She first checked out how my eyes were doing and smiled....  I thanked her for changing the way I feel about myself by that beard conversation.  She gave me "that" smile again.  I pointed to her and said, "yep that was the smile that did it!"  Turns out that the restaurant I decided on is one that she has been to and is a favorite of hers.  I agonized about that decision for hours...  Both my sons and a best friend had the place on their short list of their favorites, so that is where I decided we should go.  Think good thoughts for me........ Smile, Wink & Grin

Again, I have no idea what will happen with all of this, but it sure is fun to be once again the type of guy that a gorgeous lady about my age would consider spending time with.
