CN Charlie .... Yes, GN did run its E7's to Winnepeg. They also had a train on the West Coast going up to Vancouver that sometimes had E7's
MLC .... I doubt you could have felt the explosion that far away. ... It certainly was loud here. The Paducah TV station had very good coverage as the explosion happened, and I think they still have videos of it on their web site. ...

That was pretty impressive bridge drop. They had good weather too.
We felt when the Corps of Engineers blew the Bird's point levy over in Missouri a few years back. Those charges were in the ground though.

Thanks for that video, Henry, and the photo, Garry.
Drones sure have opened up a whole new perspective for photography!

Henry ... Thanks for posting the dramatic video of the bridge demolition here this morning. .... While watching you can see where our bay connects with the main lake in the background in the right side of the view at 36 seconds; 1 min. 24 sec., and 2 min, 36 seconds. The old bridge was on the south side of the new bridge.
We have crossed the old bridge numerous times over the years. It was challenging to be towing the boat while meeting an oncoming large tractor-trailer truck on the old, narrow bridge. .
I noticed You Tube gave a link to watch the old Kentucky Lake bridge being demolished a year or two ago.
A four lane highway ( US 68 / KY 80) is under construction on the east end of the Barkley bridge to run east through Cadiz where it connects with I-24, and also heads eastward. It will replace an old two lane road. West of the Barkley bridge already has a new 4 lane road going west through Land Between the Lakes and across the new Kentucky Lake bridge.
Ed .... Regarding the Denmark video..... OOPS !
Ed, thanks for the video of the tower in Denmark going the wrong way.
One of the funniest comedians I have ever heard was an Englishman whose day job was demolishing old industrial chimneys. All he did was describe several 'instances' where things didn't go according to plan, but he did it in such a way that it was gut splittingly funny! I can't remember his name. It was a long time ago (university). One of the funniest incidents was one where he was called in to finish a job that someone else had botched. This huge industrial smoke stack was laden with explosives that had only partially detonated, leaving a huge hole in the side but the chimney still standing and the unexploded charges in who knows what condition. How he could turn such a dangerous situation into something hilarious was amazing. I wish I could remember the details. Google came up with lots of chimney failures but not what I was looking for. Maybe some of you real oldtimers might remember the comedian I'm talking about.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
hon30critterEd, thanks for the video of the tower in Denmark going the wrong way.
Glad to share. This just happened a few days ago. They should have known not to try a job like this on a Monday morning
We did things in a less dramatic way at GE. The steeplejack would show up in the morning, carry his lunch pail up the ladder and sit on the planks chipping the bricks away and throwing them into the smoke stack. A gang would haul the bricks out of a little access hole at the bottom.
Pearl_7C_0026 by Edmund, on Flickr
Took about two weeks but he got it done. Not as much fun as TNT but it was a little safer.
Was your man Jimmy Correa, Dave?
I can appreciate what you mean about the comedian/storyteller. I knew a few fellows that could "spin-a-yarn" and have you rolling on the floor in no time.
Somehow I think that charm is going to fade away with the increased use of "Twitter" and, well — e-forums like this. A sad price to pay, IMHO.
Cheers, Everybody!

Evening diners,
I think we're almost in Vicksburg by now what'd ya say we disembark from the ferry and resume our tour via rail? Where to next here in the south? Any suggestions?
I went to the club yesterday, a guy brought and ran his BN Empire Builder consist, the cars were all still in GN Big Sky Blue and retained their GN reporting marks, the motive power was two SDP45s (possibly Dash 2s) also in Big Sky Blue but with BN reporting marks running elephant style, it was quite a sight had the cars not derailed as much.

If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
gmpullmanWas your man Jimmy Correa, Dave?
It's too long ago to remember his name. I googled 'Jimmy Correa' but didn't get anything that would go back far enough. I was in university in the late 70s and IIRC the record was quite old at that time.
gmpullmanThe steeplejack would show up in the morning, carry his lunch pail up the ladder and sit on the planks chipping the bricks away and throwing them into the smoke stack.
Just being able to climb that ladder and still have enough energy left to do some work is amazing enough, but to devour that chimney in two weeks is incredible! I have said this many times: We don't know what a hard day's work is! My ancestors cleared and farmed about 150 acres of bush in Painswick, Ontario in two years starting in 1823 ('cleared' is a relative expression, it took much longer to get the stumps out). At the same time they built the first rough corduroy road from Bradford to Painswick, 35 miles - it was by no means straight, all they did was basically fill in the mud holes, but it was a huge improvement over the muddy trails that existed before that. During the same time frame they hauled freight with their team of oxen from Painswick to Georgian Bay for the military! Sounds unbelievable but it is true. I get exhausted just thinking about it!
hon30critter I have said this many times: We don't know what a hard day's work is!
Oh, you mean like a stoker on the Titanic? Puddler in a steel mill? Breaker boys? Swinging a pick-axe at the Panama Canal?
I'm struck by the same thoughts especially when I watch the documentaries of the industrial revolution (with my remote in one hand and a chilled drink in the other ) Yeah, we got it rough these days.
The least I can do is raise a glass to the labors of our forebears. How'd you like to get up every morning and do what Fred Dibnah does for a living!
I get wobbly going up a sixteen foot ladder... and some of these angle backward at the overhangs!
If you fancy the time, look at more of Fred Dibnah's work shown at Youtube and other places. Quite a lad!

Good Morning,
Ray, exciting news out your way! I hope everything goes well on your 'date'.
Yesterday we went to the gym and while I didn't do 3 miles like Ray, I did manage 2. I did it non-stop in 40 minutes or so which isn't bad considering I do have short legs. I have found that I have shrunk a little so instead of being 5'7" I am now nearly an inch shorter. Those legs have to faster than ever. I have a very light build, as in 145 lbs., so that does help somewhat.
My visit to the docs yesterday revealed that I probably have arthritis in my jaw joint which is causing the pain around my ear. He took x-rays to confirm. Oh joy. At least the pain is largely gone now. I'm not liking this getting old much.
I looked on the Altas site and they are coming out with a GP7 run shortly. One of the roads is the TH&B ( Toronto Hamilton & Buffalo) which I have always thought would be fun to model. It was owned jointly by CP and NYC but did interchange with CN so I suppose one of their GP7s might find itself on my southern Ontario sub. It is fictional anyway. TH&B had some interesting steam too as in a couple of ex-NYC Hudsons and they also had the only Berkshires in Canada. They were smaller than those in the U.S. Division Point did a beautiful model of it a couple of years ago but you are talking close to 2 grand for a copy now so there won't be one on my road.
Time to get out and do a few errands today.

Afternoon folks!
Just checking in after having a great lunch with a lovely lady.... I think we both enjoyed the hour and a half we spent together. I don't think anything will progress on this as we have different needs in the future.... She will be retiring in a couple years and will be moving to the midwest (back home basically) to be close to family. Since my family is here, we both agree our families need grandparents nearby (for the sake of the grandparents...). I do think we have become good friends and may get together at some point to talk again. It was a fun and well spent lunch time! She is responsible for my finally making some good decisions for my life, and she told me that several people have mentioned to her recently how much better and happier I look.
My new Dumbbells should be arriving late this afternoon, so I plan to get started doing some upper body training tonight. The lady I was with at lunch told me two of her doctors have told her she should do some weight training as well. Recent research has shown that people who work out have a reduced chance of developing demenia (that runs in both our families). So, I guess I am doing some of the right things now.

We'll get there sooner or later!
A couple days ago my wife and I stopped in Rocky Mount, North Carolina for our dinner break.
.
We found a Mexican restaurant named "LA PERLA TAPATIA", and what an unexpected treat it was.
We entered from the "far side" of the restaurant, so we had no idea part of the eating area was in a real dining car!
To top it all off, the food was reasonably priced, potions were beyond generous, and the entire staff was as friendly as they could be. What a lucky stop.

Lot of Caboose things have happen today!
1 Had to pay $148.80 the Blood Sucking Attonery and the Rail Sucking State off ILL! This is because I was short $2.00 to the state in 2010 and they never told me I was short till Feb 20th 2018?
2 Seem the clothes dryer has died! Only have had it maybe 2 years?
3 Steven Getting Old Sucks! Ok, second trip to the post offices to mail the package! Made a new lable with your name on it this time. While I wrote PO on the lable I forgot to write the PO Number!

Good evening Diners,
Brunhilda, I'll have an Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.
i got my new BLMA drill guides in the mail today. That was prompt service. They're tiny little things, but I suppose they're supposed to be. I don't know if Kalmbach allows us to plug our suppliers, but it was a train guy. I am pleased.
Kevin: That looks like a very interesting restaurant. I'm a big fan of Mexican food and then to put it in a diner car. How could one lose with that combo. Dig the carvings on the back of the booths. Nice reliefs and colorful too. We never had a problem getting good Mexican out west, but back here in what I considered the east growing up it can be a challenge.
Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is ok, safe, and warm.

I've been looking for that item. If you got them from a commercial vendor, how about letting us know where?
Thanks

You the man Ed!! That is indeed the fellow I was referring to. I'll have to spend some time listening to him on Youtube to see if he is still as funny as he was in 1979. Thanks a lot.
As for Fred Dibnah, I was quite uncomforable just watching him climb the ladder(s). There was a time when I could walk along a roof's edge without any worries. Now I don't even like to do step stools because I can barely feel my feet anymore.
Cheers!!
Well Kevin, what a camera hog! How about a selfie with both of you enjoying the day.

Hey Kevin! Nice find! The carved seat backs are really neat.
I love things like tacos and natchos and stuffed jalapenos, and Dianne makes a mean jalapeno/cheese corn bread. Unfortunately some Mexican foods like re-fried beans don't agree with me, and I'm not just talking gas! Something about "....through the eye of a needle at 50 ft....." I know, I know, too much information!!!

Thanks for the info. I only see the 4500 item on the website. Looks like that's for diesels. Is that what you have? I thought they also had a template for cars.
Thanks again.
Good morning everybody ..
Flo ..... Don't give Dave any Mexican food with refried beans today.... LOL ... I'll just have coffee and a donut, please.... Thanks..
We actually had warm weather yesterday and there is more for today. It's windy however. I did some outsdie work yesterday and have more for today.

Still Friday morning, I see, for a few minutes. You guys are reminding me it's lunch time.
As many of you know, I'm getting a divorce, selling the house, moving elsewhere and generally rebooting my life. The layout has been packed up since last September. Earlier this week there was a full-price offer for my house. It's a big step in the right direction, and I hope all goes well. Now, if the divorce lawyers can get off their loathsome spotty behinds and do their jobs, I can really get going. (No, I don't know what their behinds look like, but it's a Monty Python line I think is appropriate, nevertheless.)
Anyway, the home inspection was yesterday and there were no major issues, according to the real estate guy, so here's hoping it's another hurdle conquered.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Howdy folks,
Today is a regular PITR day!
Why am I so "derailed" ?
I went to hotel B to conine the pressure washing I started yesterday, the guy that broke the machine that the hotel owns brought his personal machine in for the hotel to use) well everything went fine yesterday, but today... oh boy, I started it up within 5 minutes it stopped! I went to restart it, no compression! If threw a rod! Why did it throw a rod? Because the guy had NO OIL in it!!! The hotel is going to rent a pressure washer Monday so it's not a complete "wash".
Sorry for the pun.
I need a strong drink, I'll take a tall glass of lemonade please, thanks!
I'll pop in again later if I get around to it.
I need to cut the foam for my turntable but I got side tracked repacking valves. I had my water turned off outside and when I turned it on .....drip drip dirp. Fixed that and then I looked at the main valve. Turned it off to replace the packing and it leaked turned off!!! Carumba as Bart would say. Now I need a real plumber to replace the valve. At least it's not leaking at the moment.
Here is a NS heritage unit. Brasstrains.com is soliciting interest in brass models of the heritage fleet if any of you are interested.
Evenin' folks!
Been a good day for me, I guess. I did my 3 miles over at the Fieldhouse. Today I did 7 laps (1.6 miles) for the first leg, rested 10 minutes, then did 5 laps (.895 miles), rested another 10 minutes, then did the last 5 laps to total 17 (3 miles). Managed to cut a few minutes off the time as well.
NWP SWPBecause the guy had NO OIL in it!!!
Ah.... Steven, if that was a gas engine, always, always, always check the oil before you start it!!! Especially for small air cooled motors. Don't ask how I know about that........ LOL Back on the farm running old worn out tractors and trucks, etc. we always checked the oil before starting. Always! Just a part of the prestart process at the beginning of the day. BTW, that is done on all RR Diesel Engines before you hit the starter as well. All part of a normal prestart process. You will be lucky if the guy who owned it doesn't tell you you owe him for the repair!
We are expecting an ice storm tomorrow afternoon through Sunday morning. Talking about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of build-up. That could cause some major problems around the area... Likely trees being downed and power outages! Time will tell.
I found a list of quotes I had stuck away... Doesn't say where they are from, but you may enjoy some of these...
"Does your train of thought have a caboose?"
"I'm not crazy, I've just been in a very bad mood for 30 years."
Eveing Diners!
Flo, the gang and I will have a please, give Rick a RBF and Steven a Quart Of Oil! All so leave a Stein outside for Ulrich!
Steven I am with Ray with checking the oil before starting a mower, wood chipper and such.
Thrid Time Was The Charm! Package was fanlly sent! I hope you can use what I have sent. I did keep the bridge, day dreaming about a new layout where I can use it! I will PM you the tracking number in the next few days.
Dryer Front Put down a $100.00 deposit on a used dryer today. With installion and tax cost is $202.00. Boy I could have bought a new engine for that!
Train Front Got the Monon 50 foot box car for free! I am helping Ken (ower) with meeded parts he does not have. Still want the Pen Pullman cars he has! I will add he is all Ed's Fault! After I got the RDC with lite interior I have been hooked!
