Boy this cold is kicking my rear. I left work yesterday I felt so bad. I was better today until about 2 and now I can hardly go. I came home and slept for 2 hours. Buy stock in Kleenex I am using a ton....

Zyrtec (or the CVS equivalent) is now my go-to cold medicine.  It stops my runny nose and cough, and lets me sleep through the night.  Not something to take if you're operating heavy machinery, but one just before bedtime lets me get a good night's sleep and then I feel much better in the morning.

And speaking of feeling better in the morning, it looks like the breakfast buffet is on me this page.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

And speaking of feeling better in the morning, it looks like the breakfast buffet is on me this page.

Here it is, dig in!

And so this post isn't just a pretty food picture... Every Friday here at the big K, a group of us get together at lunchtime to play board games. Some of the games we've enjoyed include Fluxx, Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, and Wakening Lair (new from Rather Dashing Games).

Do you play board games with your family and friends? Which are your favorites?

Day three of the crud. I stayed home from work as it has gotten worse.

I can't take Zyrtec  it makes me too nutty. I can't take Tamiflu either, unless you want me seeing little green men and such.

Board games, We play apples to apples with friends. I used to play lots of Monopoly. Mainly play cards like canasta and pinochle.

One thing about this crud I have been starving and wanting to eat everything.

Snort, sniff, blow, drip....

I'll see Steve's fried potatoes and raise him a Cvarci.  Croatian fried white bacon and onions.  From the youtube videos, white bacon seems to be fat and no meat.  They cook it in cauldrons that would make the wicked witch of the North, proud.

It's a snack.  I think cvaci is Croatian for unhealthy.

I'm not a big aficionado, but my brother is. Whenever I visit, I usually get sucked into at least one: Lords of Waterdeep, Subdivision, Settlers of Catan, Castles of Burgundy, Travels of Marco Polo, etc. just off the top of my head. He has dozens, including Ticket to Ride. I think they do the lunch thing, and once a month or so they meet up at a local club. I've been sucked into a club visit as well. Dorky to be sure, but still a lot of fun. Plus, the gamer club has more (active) members and is more diverse than the MRR clubs I've visited.

Haven't heard of any of these board games.  I don't remember playing a lot with my kids, but growing up there was Monopoly, Parchesi, Life and Risk.  My parents played a lot of scrabble and gin rummy.

I had some aunts and uncles that played pinochele and a grandmother that played canasta.  Never understood those card games or bridge.  My father was a big time poker player in college, but he never passed any of that knowledge to me.

My mother with Alzheimers usually whips my cabooose when we play scrabble.  She can still figure out how to make multiple words in multiple directions and get the triple word score.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, the gang and I will have a Beer please. Give Rick and Steven what they like and leave a Stein outside for Ulrich.

Another Pretty day off. To Bad The Grass Is Growing! Sigh

PRR Passanger Car Front Been playing the the couplers and got them all with in .10 to .20 of a inch. I normal call the train fixed after 3 laps around the layout! I was 6 feet short of making the 3rd lap then the first passanger car picked a turnout? I knew they will take some work and I know I will get them running well!

PRR Car 3784 is the one giving me problem. I notice the coupler pockets are not swing like the other cars. While I do not think that is the current problem it is something to look at later. First I will check the wheel sets.

Ed What color would the seats and carpet be in a PRR car? After I get them tracking right I want to get then lite and add detail. Guess I will be cutting legs off HO folks as well. Whistling

Gary Do you by chances have any Bachmann PRR passangers cars you would sale?

 Later, Ken

Good Evening Diners,

A sunny day here and seasonal temps of about 60F. It is amazing that even though Canada has been metric for 40 years, I can still relate to farenheit temps that I learned as a child and a young adult.

We are starting to get the migrant birds through here and had about 40 Juncos in our yard today.  Next will be the sparrows.

As far as board games go, we don't play them now but for the 25 years we had the sailboat in Gimli,  we often played Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit when we stayed over on weekends. The light from the cabin lamps was too dim to read by so it was board games.

Ed, that was some deal on the CRV. Our friends have had one for several years and really like it.

Nothing much new on the RR front. I did run  the N scale a little with a RS10 on the point. A RS10 is like an RS11 except the ends are flat. It was built by MLW for Canadian roads. MLW was a sub of ALCO.

Well soon time for a little tellie and tea. We have some fabulous cupcakes for a snack that we get from a little bakery here. They are expensive as in $3 each but are worth it as everything is done from scratch including the icing.

Good afternoon from the land of blue sky and 26c weather.

Been busy today. Early morn did a 4 hr. shift at the school to get ready for the big fair next Saturday. It is a big deal that raises well into six figures for the school. Helps keep the tuition down to a lower pain threshold. On fair day I do garbage patrol, that lets me wander everywhere and lets me see what's going on. One year I did security and guarded a door all day, sheer torture. Sanitation is always the last job taken and I think it is the best.

When I came home I rode the Deere and cut my acre of grass and did a ton of yard work, the pain is hitting, time for agony relief.

Speaking of Monopoly, back when the great depression hit, my Dad was thirteen (born 1916) He wanted a Monopoly board so bad and couldn't afford one, so he made one. He went to all the paint stores around Winnipeg and got paint chips for the properties and deeds, typed up all the various cards and carved out by hand the hotels, houses, and players. The only thing he purchased was the money. It is my prize possession.

The kid was on set 17 hrs Wednesday and 14 hrs yesterday. Today he had a 1500hrs call time and was told to be prepared to work until at least 0800hrs Saturday. He slept 12 hours solid last night. I ask him how he was feeling and he said "solid, I am right back in the groove".

The set is twelve minutes from the hotel and they have small buses running back and forth. There are also a couple of limo's for the important people (not my son) however the drivers really like him and hop out and open the door of the limo when he comes out and he takes the limo back to the hotel. I think the drivers are just so bored it gives them something to do. The kid loves rolling up to the hotel in that thing and having the door opened for him.

He is counting up his hours and premiums and thinks he will hit between $6000.00 to $7000.00 for the week. Dad loves this as it is tuition I don't need to come up with.Thumbs Up

He has been asked to do a project as a university kid. $35.00 an hour, plus if he has a newish Apple laptop, he will get $35.00 a day for that, plus if he has a newish Apple I-Phone $35.00 a day for that. We bought him both for Christmas last year. It's funny because he always has both on set anyway to help pass the downtime, now he will get $70.00 a day for doing it.

I asked him how the film crew can work such long hours over the length of the shoot, he said they don't, they have two shifts. It is only the people in front of the camera that have to tough it out. Learn something new every day.Indifferent

Well, I best get going on dinner, the boss has gone to the barn with #1 daughter and they will be home from the lesson soon.

Thanks for the beer Ken, I really needed it today.

All the best to all.

Brent

Hello fellow birders!

Dianne and I went down to Long Point today to see what's left of the duck migration. The huge rafts of ducks were long gone up north but we managed to see some interesting birds. We saw lots of Horned Grebes, including one that was within about 20' at the first outlook tower, and another that was trying to swallow a fish that was a bit too big. It eventually got the fish down but we were worried that it was going to choke to death in the process. We counted 25 species in total, plus one coyote Smile, Wink & Grin.

Just so you non-birders can judge how nuts we are, we drove for six hours total so we could watch birds for three hours.

The warblers are just starting to show up. We are going to Point Pelee in two weeks so hopefully the migration will be in full swing. It all depends on the weather, or more specifically, the wind direction. Last May the wind was from the north for the three days we were there so nothing was crossing the lake. The day after we left the wind changed and people reported the best numbers of sightings in 30 years Sigh.

May your feathers not be ruffled!

Good evening diners.

Zoe - A nice slice of that yummy looking chocolate cake, with a glass of milk please. Thanks.

SteveO - Scrabble, Monopoly, and Clue are big ones, but get me with a certain friend, and either Chess, Stratigo, or Risk are the game of the day. (Once, when we were both in our mid teens, we had a chess match going from 6pm until close to 1130pm, and we were still in a three game set! It finally ended simply because everyone was tired.)

However, Farkle (Farkle is a game played with dice), Yahtzee, and Card games (Texas Hold'em, Blackjack, Spoons, Liar and Hearts) get played more often then the board (or is it bored) games.

Ken - Sounds like you are making progress on the PRR cars.

Batman - So only the actors, etc..., pull longer hours? Seems like the cushy job would be the filming crew then. (Until you see their pay versus the actors imagine.)

Ed - At first, I thought that the Geep was not that bad, but when seeing the cab units, it was definitely off quite a bit! Wow!

Steven NWP - Seems like those odd "users" show up at times, then will disappear shortly thereafter. I have just gotten to the point that I ignore the whole "users online" section, as other times, people will be posting but it will show only me as online.

Weather - Went from 65 and sunny, to 45 and raining, and with a chance of snow Saturday night-Sunday morning. Then we go to 70+ next week. Ayecarumba....

W*^k - Sporadically busy today, but with some real stupid people... Yikes....

Trains - Got the color coat on the parts I was airbrushing the other night. No issues with my cheap harbor freight airbrush, until I was silly and let some paint dry on the needle/nozzle while adjusting something.... Easily fixed though.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night!

Evening All!

Just stopping in to say Hi! Been too busy trying to help Mom & Dad move into a senior home here in town. It has been from 4 a.m. (wake up for work) to 10-10:30 pm. Days are getting long with no time for much of anything other than work and parents. The Oscar's are coming entirly too much lately. (Not the movie awards or the carnivous fish wither.)

Need to go to sleep now.

Hi, fellows

CNCharlie
Ed, that was some deal on the CRV. Our friends have had one for several years and really like it.

Thanks, CNC. I'm looking forward to taking 'er for a spin, soon. My sister buys a new Honda every two years, weather she needs one or not, and passes the "old" one down to family members. I never asked to be on the waiting list but the missus was driving a 13 year-old Ford and it was time for some new wheels so I put my request in Cool

Some of the other Hondas she has passed down have changed hands and really racked up some miles. I believe one was at 230K when it was again passed on to someone else Indifferent

Carpet? Pennsylvania Railroad coach? Carpet! Laugh

Take a look here for a good peek inside a work-a-day P70 (which is the basis for the Bachmann car). OK, I admit some of the later P70s were upgraded with better seats and windows. Still not sure about carpet, though. Probably linoleum.

http://rrmuseumpa.org/QR/p70/

I assume you have coaches? You can look at a typical open-section Pullman here:

http://rrmuseumpa.org/QR/lotos_chairs/

This is the lounge section. Notice anything different between the two interiors? This is the reason I choose to "Go PullmanBig Smile

Here is a look at the open-section area:

http://rrmuseumpa.org/QR/lotos-berth/

Before the "simplified" paint, say before WWII many of the Pullman cars had an excellent wood-grain wall finish. Upholstery was usually maroon or moss-green.

I'll stop by later, folks. Thanks for the comments on the NYC Geeps.

How about a shot of some later NYC Geeps?

Well; another week, another slew of new experiences.

I have just enough to preorder the first of like 14 odd cars for my COLA; the baggage-dormitory. I'll preorder it in the nex week or so. I think I might snag a few of the UP paint Hiawatha cars released a number of years ago, too.

Next up is going to be one of 7(!) 'Pacific' 10-6 sleepers. Oh yeah, I'm going to slap together a peak season 1st section consist, so an all Pullman lineup with the famed Astra Dome diner and lounge.

What else happend? Nothing too noteworthy.

Went to the other club, Blane gave me a "graduation gift" a SD70 DCC no sound, I stopped by the "swap meet" table got two shells for EMD locomotives of unknown model, and 5 three foot boards with HO track on it and 1 three foot board with N scale track, all of it was.... FREE!

Anybody know where the diners headed for May?

I'll be back later.

I would say a big NO to that. Such arrangements involve installing "spyware" on your computer and/or phone that sends data back to the research company. It's usually on the up-and-up -- they aren't capturing sensitive information like credit card numbers, and the data is usually used only in aggregate, not individually identifiable. But the catch is, he will have no idea what data is being captured, or who is receiving it. If he uses the equipment in any way related to his work on the set, he may be unintentionally violating his NDA. Don't do it.
