Well that was interesting!  Couldn't get the volume loud enough to hear the radio chatter.  Looks like he was doing the brakes on about every 4 or 5th car?

Good morning ...

BOOM ! ...... That is what we will hear early tomorrow morning. A new brdge has been built, and the 86 year old bridge next to it will be dynamited early tomorrow morning .

We don't have the boat out of winter storage yet, and so we won't be able to see the brdige being demolished. It is around the bend from us; otherwise we would see it from our house.

We were at Rotary Club Auction ( a fund raiser ) last nioght, and somebody bid $16,500 to be the person who pushes the button to blow up the bridge..... That is a bit more than I would have been willing to pay.

Here is a link to the cameras where you can see the bridge project.

https://www.workzonecam.com/projects/kytc/141279/workzonecam05

Jim (UP831) .... An alternative if you can not find the recommend Squadren Putty is Testors putty in a gray tube similar to the orange tube with plastic cement. It is usually at Hobby Lobby.

Steven NWP SWP ....  Now, your greatest asset is your youth. You have a full life ahead of you. All we can do for you is encourage you. While it is okay to have big ideas, we all must remember no idea is worthwhile unless it is implemented. Accordlingly, I suggest you pick a path and stay on it. Always do your best, and never waste even a second of time. Always believe in yourself, and be confident you will have a great future. .... For model railroading, I still think you should start a small and doable project. Perhaps, you can make a small 2X4 diorama or module to fit in with a future layout. It should be very basic. Perhaps, it will have a factory served by rail. Or maybe a small locomotive servicing track. It will not be a big empire passing through big mountains, etc. One small locomotive will be all you need.  .... Have fun !

Hot coffee bacon and eggs sunny side up.

Tuned on the Horseshoe Curve webcam just in time to see a train go into emergency stop.  One of the conductors is walking along with a big stick like the one that used to open the windows in my old elemetary school with the 16' ceilings and windows, putting on the hand brakes.

It's 8:45 est now, you can back up the video for the next couple hours to the time stamp at the top of 08:27:30

Steven:

Have you actually designed a layout building? Have you done an analysis of what a dedicated layout building would cost? Have you looked into the building codes to see if you can even do it? Have you figured out how much it will cost to get hydro, water and sewage into it if necessary? Do you want to have a workshop or even just a workbench in the building. Will you need internet? Heat? Air conditioning? Toilet? Bar fridge (that's a definite 'must have' in my booksSmile, Wink & Grin, so is the toilet!)?

I'm not trying to embarrass you or say it can't be done, but you are spending a lot of time speculating and dreaming. Talking about your dreams is OK, to a point, but you are going to lose support if you continue to do it repeatedly. Please show us something concrete, like a viable layout plan that you have created or some rolling stock that you have worked on.

With all due respect Steven,

Dave Warnica

You mean like this?

http://www.railmerchants.net/illinoiscentral/

I have money but not THAT kind of money!Laugh

That said I still would LOVE to own a real caboose but until then I'll have to settle for the model variety!Laugh

I was thinking of using pine tongue and groove boards inside my layout building, stain them with my two tone technique, do a prestain, then a light brown like golden oak let that soak in and dry a little, then go over with a darker brown like rad oak in a thinner coat, the grain should vary from dark to light and come out BEAUTIFUL!

Well it's past my bedtime, goodnight! Zzz

I'm building a building to build a layout in, it will give me the most flexibility, rater than try to share the space with living areas and such.

I seem to recall that you had plans to move a caboose to your property (along with a locomotive or two). Did that not pan out? The overall cost might be worthwhile and when you have a place of your own just hang the markers and roll 'er to the new location — layout and all.

There is something called Squadron Putty that is useful for filling gaps and defects in styrene.

Henry is absolutely correct. Squadron Putty or Tamiya putty are great for filling gaps in styrene. However, they can be hard to work with if you are trying to preserve an existing paint job which is apparently what the OP needs to do. The solvent in the putties will attack the paint. That's why I suggested stretching some sprues. The sprue plug won't affect the surrounding paint as long as the solvent cement is applied from the inside. If you don't want to dis-assemble the cars to get to the inside, friction will probably hold the plugs in place just fine. If a touch up to the paint is required it will only be a tiny dot.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer Big Smile and Steven and Rick what they like. Leave a Stein out side for Ulrich as well.

Turns out today was a good day! Big Smile

Work Sucked In fast it was a god awful day!

Train Front Reason it is a good day! Found what caused the PR-3 not to work and it was a very easy fix! Yes Can not believe how much I depend on it. Got the Monon F-3 dragging some freight and life is good!

Ed Thanks for the link and yes they are the wire stippers I want / need.

Steven did I read that right, 30 2"X4"? If it is for the bench work it self I would rethink that plan. Now if you have a wood planer you will be Ok I guess. No such thing as a straight 2"X4"!

And I thought I had to much train stuff! Here is a video of a persons layout that has 16,000 rolling stock and 1400 Locomtives? Yea, it is N scale but still?

 Later, Ken

I think I can fill up the botched holes with CA and re drill thru the guide.

There is something called Squadron Putty that is useful for filling gaps and defects in styrene. You will see it in pics in the threads where guys are scratchbuilding steam locos.  It used to come only in green but they also have white and gray now.  It dries pretty fast and is sandable.

CA is hard to just get it to fill a hole.  It's going to want to form a shiny blob on top the hole.   I think you have to sand CA early before it fully hardens, but you can't sand it when it's still sticky.

Evening diners,

I was hoping to report that I had purchased 30 2x4x8s towards my layout building but the Joint Chiefs said it will not be till later this week so that's on hold...

Not much else going on.

I think by now we're just about to Natchez Mississippi under the Natchez Vidalia Bridge...

I think I can fill up the botched holes with CA and re drill thru the guide.  If that's unfeasible, please say so.

Hi Jim:

It's certainly not unfeasible, but I would test the sharpness of your drill bit before trying to redrill the holes. The accuracy of the sharpening on the micro drills can vary. Some are dull right from the factory. If the bit doesn't bite in quickly and produce a scroll of shavings instead of sawdust sized bits I would be inclined to try another bit. A dull or improperly ground bit will wander. The tendancy to wander might be exacerbated if the drill has to cut into part of the CA used to fill the incorrect holes. By the way, I buy my bits in 'bulk'. In other words I will buy several bits of the same size so I have spares if (when!) I break one, but I don't buy all of the sizes. I buy maybe every third size with larger quantities for the tiny bits and relatively fewer quantities of the #60s and up (down if you are talking drill size numbers).

There are other ways to fill the errant holes but they will likely require painting. One is to take a styrene sprue and heat it so it can be stretched. The tapered sprue will fit into the hole at some point along its' length. Trim the sprue off flush with the surface and use some solvent cement to glue the plug in place from the inside. If you can get a sprue that is close to the paint colour you might be able to get away without painting it. The sprue idea is not mine. Credit to doctorwayne.

Hope this helps.

Good evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have an Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

Lion: my belated condolences for your loss.

I was able to locate a BLMA drill guide on line and bought two.  Only the second time I've ever bought anything online, but I couldn't let them get away.  I've tried to line up off the cast on grabs and that failed miserably.  So, I have high hopes for these.  I think I can fill up the botched holes with CA and re drill thru the guide.  If that's unfeasible, please say so.  I bought a couple of undec BB shells some years ago to practice on, but I would like to salvage them, get a mechanism, and finish detailing them.  Probably wishful thinking on my part.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

well I'll be back later...

Thanks for the warning....  (Just kidding you! Laugh)

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, I could use a cup of decaf and a Tylenal, please.

Had my first post op meeting with the surgeon who did my eye lids.  All is well but I still have some swelling on the eyelids themselves.  She said it was more than she expected, but not unusual.  So now I am on a strict regiman of hot compresses several times a day.  The same one I was supposed to be doing but, kinda kept forgetting.

When I got to the Eye Care Center in Canandaigua, the place was packed and there was a line at the check in desk.  One of the ladies pointed for those waiting to check in around the corner at the check out desk...  I got the second window and waited while the lady was on the phone with someone.  When She hung up she asked how she could help me.  Now she looked a bit familiar to me but I had no idea who she was.  I said my name and that I was there for a follow-up appt.  She got very excited and told me who she was.  She and I were in the same class at school were good friends and hung around with the same crowd.  She was a very cute little red head back then!  I came close to asking her out a few times, but then I got asked out by the girl I ended up marrying...... Whistling

Got home, had a quick lunch and a half hour later headed over to the fieldhouse to walk.  Today, I walked 2.5 miles with only a 10 minute rest at the half way point...  I haven't done that much in over 30 years!  Progress is being made...

I am busy putting the information together today for the Division NMRA Meet coming up on Cinco de Mayo.

Catch you all later!

Brother Lion:  Sorry for you loss.

Weekend update:  I was a good husband this weekend, helping my wife with a very unpleasant job at her school.  When we finally got finished late yesterday afternoon, we were throwing stuff away in the dumpster.  The lid was propped up, but as i threw stuff in, it fell hitting me in the head.  Got a big gash on my forehead.  Bled a lot; then just as quickly, it stopped.  Wife insisted we go to the ER.  Turns out, it wasn't as bad as it looked.  No stitches, just antibiotics, a big band aid, and a tetnus shot.

Good morning .... Coffee with coffeecake please.

Johnboy ..... My prayers for all who were affected by the terrible bus disaster in Saskatchewan... I thought of you immediately when I saw it on the news, and I was one of those commenting in this thread about it. It is very sad.  ... Angel

CN Charlie ....  It is good to hear you are running trains. Feel free to tell more about your RS3.

Ed .... E-units look great in my opinion.... I have two BLI CB&Q E7's and several Proto 2000 E-units .... I also have some dummy E-units made by Con Cor and IHC. ... Probably, the CB&Q E5 was the best looking of all E-units.

Sad

G'd Evening Gang,

This has been a very sad and somber week end in Saskatchewan.

After a terrible crash where a semi pulling a set of doubles loaded with peat moss bales struck a motor coach  (bus) filled with the Humboldt Broncos hockey team of the Western Canada Junior Hockey League, tearing the bus into two peices. The front end back to the first baggage tank and then from there to the rear. They had to cut the roof off to get to the victums. The result ended up with 15 dead and 14 injured including the driver of the bus.  The trucker walked away unhurt.

There was vigils held all over the province tonight, at least 10 that I know of.   The one in Humboldt even had Federal Gov't employees there as well as the Prime Minister and the Priemier of the Province. A lot of others have stepped up in their support for them as well.  The League, the NHL. the Saskatoon Rush, (prov. Lacrosse team, and many local, National and International teams, Leagues, and individuals to the point they have raised 4.6 million dollars for them.  That is wonderful as the boys that are still living will need all kinds of therapies both physical and phsycological

I want to thank Ken and any others that mentioned them in there earlier entries here.  WE all need your prayers at this time.   Will know more as the days go on and the investigators finish up.

In my career I, and my Son, have hauled Basketball, ski, figure skating, broomball,  ringette ,baseball teams. soccer, football, and hockey teams all over western Canada and north central States for thousands and thousands of miles and there but for the grace of God that could have been either my Son or I.

I am eternally Grateful that it wasn't. I will do much praying for the victums and their families but also for the Trucker who walked away unscathed physically, but how could a person continue to function properly with the weight of that incident hanging on his mind. Whether he is charged or not. he will be screwed up.

May Peace come to all.

Good Evening,

Lion, sorry to hear about your mother.

Dave, regarding wire strippers, I have a General No. 69 stripper that has a dial so you can set it for 12-28 gauge wire. It works very well even on small decoder wire.

Still waiting for spring here. Hope it comes soon as we are supposed to start birding and breakfast on the 18th. So far we have only heard a few geese and seen the odd Junco but nothing else.

Ran trains yesterday with the RS3. I am thinking of putting a sound decoder in it. I have a sound only decoder set up under the layout that works ok but still not as nice as sound in the engine. Perhaps I'll use the proceeds from the items I have on consignment for that purpose.  I also have a watch for sale with a jeweller I know. He says he likely has it sold so that will add close to a grand into the kitty. The watch I wear every day is over 40 years old and will likely outlast me. Nothing like a simple windup mechanism. I also have the watch my Dad got to go overseas with and it still works fine but as it is a Rolex, I guess that isn't surprising.

The car turned over 100k which isn't a lot for 8 years. That is kilometers so about 62k in miles. At this rate it should last a long time. It is in very good shape. A fellow I know has a Volvo with close to 400k miles on a 20 year old car so they can last a long time.

Well time for tea and TV.

CN Charlie

Watched both the Nascar race and the Masters this afternoon and tonight.  Had to tape the later.  I enjoyed both.  I played a little golf in high school and stunk.  I missed the whole Tiger Woods thing, but as a kid watched Palmer, Nicholas, Player and Trevino all the time.  When did drivers get so big?  They looked like 1/2 a cantolope on the end of the shaft.

Somewhere along the line, Nascar drivers decided they needed to be in better physical shape.  Jimmie Johnson leads some of them on 40 mile bike rides the day before the race.  Reed won the Masters and he didn't look like he could go 40 miles unless it was in a golf cart.  I never heard of Reed or any of the finalists in the Masters.  I will say it had a minimum of commercials and from a standpoint of capturing all the action, moved right along.

Nascar is just more than turning left, and golf is a sport too.  Electronic sports, sitting on your bum playing on the computer is not a sport.  Yet there are scholarships to college for Esports.  What would Ulrich say?  Probably what I would say.

MR front I was working on the framing for a Details Assoc. Branchline roundhouse I got on Ebay.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could use a refill for my decaf, please....

Rather cold outside here in the Finger Lakes Region today...  I guess Mother Nature hasn't figured out it is Spring yet...  Made it to church this morning.  Our pastor (Deb) took the week off to visit her family in the midwest, so one of my students from way back filled in this morning.  I used to date his mother about 20 years ago....LOL  He did a great job as always.  He is on the National Hymnal Committee for my demomination among other things....  His wife and small son sat right in front of us as usual.  Awfully cute little kid!

I ordered a new Dumbell set today.  I'm planning on starting to work out some of the arm and shoulder muscles to get the tone back.  Will need to be careful of my Spinal Stenosis in the back so no Barbell lifting.  Will be setting up a time to get together with the lady I have mentioned before, probably when I see her on Tuesday.  I have decided to choose an old standard of a local place for lunch.  Hope it goes over well with her.

Have a great night out there, and prayers for those in need (which is all of us most likely!).

Brother Lion,

Your family is in our prayers.  95 is a good run though.  More than I or most people will see.

Since we are in the Deep South I'll confess my nom de guerre comes from Burl Ives, character in the movie Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Ives kept a sailboat in Annapolis and a friend of mine crewed for him when he came to town driving his Cord.  Another friend of mine crewed for Walter Cronkite.  Aside from the home of the Naval Academy, and being next to the Chesapeake Bay, it hardly deserves it's reputation as a sailing mecca. The wind is rather poor during much of the summer.

Hard part done, radiator hoses changed and car antifreeze filled back up.

Now I need to find an antifreeze recycler. Now on to new motor mounts.

Good morning all,

I spent a lot of yesterday sorting resistors and placing them in envelopes so I can easily find the ones I want for various electronics projects.

I bought one of those "super assortments " that they all came jumbled in a box.  Today is "put new radiator hoses on the car" day. It is 41 degrees outside.I won't freeze too bad. I also will change out the thermostat as well.

I will have a PHilly Cheese steak for lunch please.
