Evening diners,

Granite, sorry to hear about your collision glad all involved survived.

I have developed a plan for my Mow Kart it's a bit more involved than I originally planned but it's what I have to do to get it running.

I started a thread on a go kart forum to get some more opinions.

Mr. Otte is it in violation of forum rules to post a link to another thread on another forum even if it's not railroad related?

Well that's all the news for now.

Shopping for a newer computer. Sigh I am sick of watching the little blue wheel go around and around. Computer locks up when I go to Model Train Stuff! So good buy to XP Pro.

SeeYou190
It was a fascinating point of view. The writer pointed out how at the current rate of change, even our parents will not be able to pass anything useful along to the next generation.

Not entirely true. Kids will still need to be taught manners. Whether or not that actually happens is a different issue. Seems to be pretty rare already.

The little blue "Lifesaver" is such a big improvement over watching the little hour-glass flip over-and-over! I remember Microsoft making such a big deal about that Confused In Windows 10 it is called a "throbber"!?

I hope you are all having a safe and healthy day...

Normally I'd say no because it's off-topic, but in this thread, I guess I'll allow it this once. Just don't make a habit of it.

Good morning ....... Coffee and a bear claw please.

Steve O ........ I received my April MR yesterday. The April Fools joke is very clever. MR has done the jokes every year for a very long time. ... Do you know when was the first one nd what was the joke? ... I'm glad MR has a good sense of humor.

Ed ..... Your night photo of the heavyweight Pullman is excellent. Thumbs Up

Speaking of California .... I mentioned the other day, the California Zephyr was one of the trains going to CA. ... One of the dome observations is on display in Maricopa, AZ, and I took this photo. I'm not sure why it was decided to dispaly the car there. Maricopa is located on the Union Pacific line that was once the Southern Pacific Sunset Route. A car from the SP Sunset Limited would make more sense.

The CZ was sometimes called "The Silver Lady". It was hauled by CB&Q from Chicago to Denver; the D&RGW to Salt Lake City, and Western Pacific to Oakland, CA.

The WP's scenic route in CA included Keddie Wye and Feather River Canyon.

Evening All!

I won't use the word "good" as it has been quite the interesting 20 hours or so. I had set everything up yesterday afternoon/evening to take out to the ranch as I normally do every Tuesday. Didn't happen. I got a call from Mom at about 8:30 p.m. or so that Dad had slipped and landed on the floor. I was "requested" to come out and see if I could get Dad back in his chair. Tried all evening off and on (with a few naps in the mix) to accomplish that. That didn't happen either. About 8:30 this morning, Mom and I finally decided that we had to call the Fire Department/ambulance service to help us get him up (public assistance) because we couldn't. Had to direct the ambulance as there are multiple buildings on the ranch. After some discussion, we were both shocked when Dad agreed to go to the hospital! (He's very stubborn. German, Irish and Scottish.) It took the paramedics a little bit of doing to get him out of the tight quarters of the house. I ended up riding in the ambulance to the hospital and Mom followed later in the car. After lots of testing and such, it was determinded that he has a massive UTI bad enough that he will be spending some time in the ICU. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

12 hours is a long time to stay on the floor.  I'm glad you got him to the hospital   UTI's in the elderly can be very serious.  In fact you reminded me of a patient, H.B.  40 years later I still remember her name.

She was paralyzed supposedly from cerebral palsy, and she came in with a UTI and sepsis.  I gave her some nasal oxygen and her CO2 level went way up.  I put her on a ventilator.  Two years later she was still in the same ICU room on a ventilator, because medical assistance wouldn't pay to care for her at home.   Eventually they relented and she went home.  It will be one of the strikes against me when I get to the pearly gates.

Added a couple feeders to a tiny piece of track between turnouts in my yard, where the electricity disappeared.  Planned to start glueing the handrails on my F unit but that never happened.

Henry,

Read your post about the rabies virus-et all---In the State of Maine, rabies is an unwanted threat, who in their right mind would introduce this into the enviroment?

As a deputy sheriff, covering a large rural area, had several calls over the years involving rabid fox biting horses, cattle, barn yard fowl, and dogs. I had one try to get at me while I was inside the cruser,  it took three shots with my .45 in the forequarters to finally stop it.

Any carrion eater thats finds somthing dead will chow down, dead rabid coon not with standing--and where you live, possom--

Here rabies is a real concern for the wild life biologists, and law enforcement.

I suppose it must be what's called an attenuated live virus.  Oral polio, measles, chicken pox and yellow fever are all live vaccines.

My friend says the immunity is passed from the mother to offspring, so the theory is the same as vaccinating people for measles or flu or anything else.  If not many in a population are susceptable to the disease then it's less likely any particular animal will be infected.  Foxes, raccoons, deer and coyotes are all suburban critters.

Some of my professors in med school were in North Africa during WW2.  They filmed 5 guys in a village that had just been bitten by a rabid dog.  They were bandaged in various places but were all standing.  Then they filmed them when they got sick, like real sick.  It was one of those things I wish I could unsee.

There is only one known survivor of rabies in the history of the world.

On a brighter note, I installed hand grabs on my A unit.

I have not smelled orange blossoms since freshman year of college in Florida.  I was on the back of a Yamaha 250 and it was one of the greatest smells ever.  That area might be all suburbs and condos now.

Time to play with grab irons.

Hey YOU GUYS!!!!!

Back at work for another rail-spike sucking boring night.

All but one checked in, and only 2 rooms available.

Think Im finally getting over my cold. emphasis on FINALLY.

of the two nor'easters who have come by, we got basically missed by both. One dropped aobut 6-8", this one today, NADA. Doesn't hurt my feelings any.

well, 3 hours to go.

NWPSWP Steven, it is a nice idea to change to the idea of relocating the diner to a new place by the top of the page placer, but you gotta understand, most here, me included are old crumudgin codgers, who resist change, dont like it and wont tolerate it.

Top of the page as ALWAYS AND ONLY meant the poster with top page honors buys "virtual" lunch, breakfast, dinner or drinks or whatever THEY CHOOSE to buy for a round for the posters on that page. ADding another requirement is too much.

AGAIN. NWPSWP, your idea is not a bad one, but us guyses dont like a young whippersnapper coming in and changing our ways and means! by all means, DO participate in the diner, if you are up when it is midnight on the east coast and you want to move the diner, you can, but its also good to let others take a turn at it too, Used to be only Ulrich {who is in germany, morning 6 am when 12 midnight on the east coast} and I, who was up late would open the new dinner. I don't mind ohters doing it, but it shoud only be moved at midnight, EASTERN COAST time {9:00 pm west coast} or else it ALSO confuses us old codger crumdgeons.

By all means, actively participate, but don't jump in on a high horse, and then retreat like injured when shot down on a new idea. Maybe we are not "hip" anymore, or maybe we are "hip to be square", but we is what we is.

Alos, the diner was renamed soem time ago, after a dear dear very good friend of ours, Jeffrey WImberly after he passed of complications due to diabetes. He was friend to all, unless you made an enemy out of him! You missed out on a great guy, NWPSWP STeven! He is SORELY missed, had a heart of gold, survived life on barely no income, and loved his trains. It was absolutely unanimous to rename it in his honor, and to hold a candle vigil for him, aqs he will always be remembered by those of us who knew him!

nuff said, junior. glad you are here!

well, with the cameras watching, Id best get off here.

Talk to you all next week if not before, dont have much else to say,

Evening all!

Thank you to BigDaddy, herrinchoker and cudaken for your well wishes!

Dad News: His creatinine was at 9.1 when he came in on Tuesday. They reran the test to make sure they didn't foul up the test! (Upper preferred limit is 1.5) It was down to 6 something this morning. He also has received a unit of packed red blood cells this morning as his hemoglobin was low. They think he might also have a kidney stone. As Mom said, if it is only that we can work with that. (Just don't tell her I'm posting about it here. Dad is a fairly private person and he probably would be unhappy about it. Of course, Mom nor Dad read these posts, so it shouldn't be a problem. Model railroading is exclusively my hobby.)

Good evening

Galaxy ..... Good to see you. It was good of you to talk to Steven NWP SWP and let him know he is welcome. I would add to your thoughtful explanation that any decisions to change how we do things were made by the group. I recall conversations to change the name of the Diner to honor Jeff for example.  It took a while to decide upon the name for the Diner.  Later, after considerable conversations , we added the RIP Track. There are other examples .

Steven NWP SWP ...  I hope you feel encouraged to participate.  I suggest in the future you talk with everybody about any changes you propose.  ... Meanwhile , feel free to discuss any progress you are making with model railroad projects.

Ed ... I like the Sunset Limted postcard.

Ken ...  I noticed you are not considering an iMac computer. You may wish to do that.  We have been very pleased with the one we purchased a few years ago. .

FRRY ... praying for your Dad’s health to improve.

Good evening all.

Zoe - A nice slice of apple pie, with a scoop (or two) of ice cream, and a Coke please. Thanks.

Galaxy - Glad to read you are starting to feel better.

Steven NWP - While I also applaud your idea of moving to a nearby location each page (or so), every top of the page might be a bit much. So, if they move it, great. If not, we are still in Cali. No biggie.

Speaking of being in Cali - I have always said, if I ever made it to Cali, I would have to check out Jack London Square. After all, who doesn't like seeing huge trains up close right down the street? (Other than non-train people, of course....)

Ken - Windows 7 might be a bit of a difficult find... Microsoft went to 10 now, so any older systems start becoming slim.

W*^k - Tomorrow is our last day, trucks arrive at 9 and 11 to be loaded with all remaining equipment and items.

My new w*^k starts on Friday, I will be going to a different company, and no longer be selling appliances and tools, but office supplies. I had noticed a help wanted sign in their window, and inquired as to what exactly they needed. The manager asked what I had for experience, and I handed him my résumé. (I kept a folder in my car this past month...) He then did an impromptu interview, and offered a spot conditional of my references check and background check clearing. (They did.) So, I start Friday morning.

While it is still farther away then I would like, it is closer than moving to the other store the owner I currently w*^k for would be. (Especially when he now wants me as a floater between that store, and one almost 2 hrs [one way!] away. That killed that idea...) So, something is better than nothing.

Trains - Any way I can make a pesky mouse an railroad employee? I am willing to pay some cheese... Either that or turn my kitty loose in the train room... I'm leaning towards the latter.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night!

Evening diners,

Thanks for the encouraging comments guys, I didn't mean to be pushy with the idea.

Well plans of grandeur have been derailed, big time, the joint chiefs (aka my parents) have decided that the 6x8 space that was slated for my railroad is not "suitable" Grumpy

I have been reallocated to have use of an approximately 16x16 room in the shed Big Smile , but it currently is full of stuff and is not exactly railroad readyGrumpy

I have no idea on how I plan to proceed...

Well I have come up with a better version of my railroad logo! I decided on a perhaps using a diamond with an oval that has NWP in it and a bar through it with Northwestern Pacific through it. I'll post some pictures of it if I can get my photo hosting site to work.

Comes in at $279.00 and more than likely way more than I would ever need! Plus if I pull the trigger, I was hoping t stay in the $150.00 range max.

NWP SWP
Here's my logo idea.

Hi Steven;

I'm going to be honest about your proposed logo. I don't like the bar through the middle. My first impression was that the NWP logo had been crossed out and whoever did it was too lazy to paint over the whole thing.

Once I studied the logo a bit I realized that the bar contained the SWP name but it was hard to read. Once the logo is scaled down to HO size the SWP name will be almost impossible to read. Maybe doing the SWP lettering in white might help, but that will complicate the printing process.

Sorry, not trying to ruin your day. Just my My 2 Cents worth.
