 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang a Beer and Rick and Steven a RBF. Yes Flo, leave a Stein outside for Ulrich.

Ray Rick is correct about the Thundering Tennies Balls. Ed said it sounded like Tennies Balls in a Garagbe Can.

Work Front Well I was I have had odd days off this week. Whistling My normal days off are Thursday and Friday like last week. This week I was off Monday and Tuesday? If I go back to being off Thursday and Friday next week that means I will be working 10 days in a row. Sigh Not a dime of over time I will add!

Train Front. Sigh  Seems I found part of the problem with running the Bachmann F7-A on the short line. Sigh I was 95% sure it was derailing on a turnout by the Car Shop. Wheels looked in gauge but gland hand looked a little low so I cut it off. Ran it thought the turnout and all was fine! Big Smile Hit a straight section, and derailed? Derailment was a good 15 feet from the turnout?

 Seems there are three problems.

1 Flex track rails lifted on the left side out of the ties.

2 Seems I drove the rail spike to deep and it buckled. Now that was some where around 10 years ago.

3 Big cold air leak at this spot from the window A/C unit. Real bad this year so that maybe what started the problem.

Of Course It Is On The Backside That Is 44" Wide! Bang Head It was hard on me laying on my belly laying track 10 years ago! Well, the belly is about 70 pounds lighter than 10 years ago. Maybe it will not be that bad? Whistling Need a new set of rail nippers, my are shoot. Hummm, wonder if I can turst the wife to pick me up a pair from K-10 model trains?

Running some Steam and I am happy! Big Smile

 Later Ken

Howdy diners,

Brent, why are you worried about them tearing down your house? If you own the home and land they car very well make you sell, can they?

Granite: Backsplash, lighting and the popcorn ceiling... those are the same things I still have on the "to-do" list for this project.

.

Batman: It seems in my neighborhood about half of the houses that sell get knocked down and replaced with much larger homes. Mine was also built in 1988 and is currently in the smallest 5% in sized homes in the neighborhood. The houses on each side of mine have over twice as much floor space under air.

.

The presence of my house actually LOWERS my property value by $10,000.00! This makes me wonder that if the house burns down, do I need to write the insurance company a check for $10,000.00? How does that work?

.

Brass prices are falling. Market prices of somewhat common items are fluctuating wildly. The upside of this is that I can buy lots of brass now. Some gems still command a premium price, but good running locomotives at reasonable prices are getting easier and easier to find.

Hi Brent,

Nice house!

Speaking of vegetable oil spills, a tanker truck carrying mayonnaise flipped over on a highway ramp in Toronto last year. The cleanup crew had a heck of a time. When they tried to scoop it up the bobcats just sat there spinning their wheels, or worse, they slid down the ramp all on their own.Laugh

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Good morning ...

Not a vegetable oil spill, but I recall when a truck in Michigan crashed and its load of Michigan cherries was spilled all over a highway..... Traffic was the pits.... Whistling

Henry ... Thanks for posting the photo of the PC heritage unit. You called it the only good PC unit. I never did care for the PC black locomotives, and I was disappointed that NS chose black, too. I like colorful locomotives.

I have been having problems with decoders lately. Most can be reset to factory values, but 2 or 3 of them will need to be replaced.

Several weeks ago, I sent my check to Kalmbach for another year of MR. They sent it back to me saying I aleady paid them. Huh? I did not do that, but what was I to do? .... Yesterday I received notice my subsription was about to expire. ..... Sigh.... Not to pick on Kalmbach, but I think their workers can do better than that.

Have a good day.

Brent, very nice house.  I wouldn't tear it down, but there are areas in the country where it is standard practice to tear down a perfectly good house.  OJ Simpson's for one.  They are constantly tearing houses down along Pacific Coast Hwy on the way to Malibu, to build something more magnificent.

Garry  PC could have been a double entendre, I'm not saying it was, but it could have been.

Watching a rail webcam from Ft Worth.  A lot of rail traffic at a diamond, but in the background are 5 or 6 interstate highways, overpasses.  There is a spot like that in Baltimore, we call spaghetti junction.  The traffic moves better there than it does here, but it is an annoying background.

Will have another go at the Kadee couplers and see if I learned anything.  Not much snow yesterday, here, places 40 miles north got 6-8" but we have had 2" the last 2 hours and it's supposed to snow all day.  The temp is just freezing so it is heavy and wet.  Everything is closed and the TV stations are in storm emergency mode, broadcasting and curtailing what ever is usually on this time of day.

Henry: Try using whisker style couplers in the Kadee #252 snap together coupler box with the #450 conversion brackets.

.

That is what I did, and it made the installation so easy.

I hope this helps.

Good afternoon, it is 13c and sunny.

Thanks for the kind words about the house. I/we have really enjoyed the 23 years here. We don't have to move and it is unlikely we would be expropriated for anything, however, in the last two years, we have gone from having a volunteer Fire Dept and bus service that was at least 10Kms away to a 13 man three truck FD and a bus every 20 minutes. That should give you some idea about the growth happening around us.

This is the house on a tiny lot in Vancouver I traded straight up for the house we have now. I wasn't married and wanted a decent train room, it was a no-brainer about heading to the country. I was still single at the time. Big house on acreage was appealing. It was a totally different atmosphere to raise the kids as well. No malls to waste time at, only the 100 acre wood across the street for grand adventure.

We use to be surrounded by horse and cattle and now the condo's are close. As soon as my daughter finishes grade 12 in just over a year, were gone.

Vancouver Island is our likely destination as we will benefit from the upgrade as I did with my last move. I can get the same house for a third of the price.

The kid is being bombarded with movie/TV work offers, they are even phoning the house here. It still feels weird answering the phone and hearing "this is Sony pictures or this is Lions Gate Entertainment". They really want him for an upcoming episode of Once Upon A Time. He is only an extra and has never really spoken much but they were ready to fly him home for three days. It is the weekend of his hockey tourney in Calgary anyway, so they were really out of luck. He was an X-men in Deadpool 2 and really performed well apparently, especially with the stunt crew and it is mostly the same group calling him. That's my boy.Laugh

Well, it is off to work HI HO!

Thanks, that is exactly what Sam the Answer Man suggested.  He also told me I was doing it wrong.  The spring arms were supposed to be uncrossed.  I tried, I failed, ending up bending the spring somewhere.  252's ordered.

The snow was not nearly as heavy as it should have been.  We got 6", still snowing lightly and the temp is 34 degrees.

The girlfriend and I are dealing with selling and buying houses, too.  I've got a house built in 1980, which I've always been happy with, but the places we're looking at have all the things today's buyers expect, including master bedroom suites on the first floor with hot tubs, and kitchens large enough to feed a football team.

Very little space for a train room in a "desireable" floor plan.  Basements are kind of rare, and even storage space seems to be neglected.

The last time I tried to assemble a #30 series coupler I lost the centering spring. I found it two days later imbedded in the bottom of my foot. My wife pulled it out with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Good evening all.

Chloe - A Coke Float please. (Just like a RBF, but a CF...) Thanks.

Puppy news - Well, ok, he's no longer a puppy, at 6 years old, but he's still my puppy. He had successfull surgery yesterday, they removed a skin growth from his chest, that was not cancerous, without issues. The other spot, however, means he lost between 8-9cm (Brent I know will quickly get this measurement... For the rest of us, it equals a bit over 3.5 inches. Smile) off of his tail, as it was most likely cancerous. (Skin Cancer)

No Chemo will be needed, as they were successfull in removing all of the tumor. It did not appear to have spread elsewhere, so the vet is unworried about it.

I may now have the only pure-bred Golden Retriever on the planet with a clipped tail. I always said he was special, now I can prove it! Whistling

Weather - Toby gave us a few flurries today, but nothing accumulating came from him in my area. So Erie still sits in 2nd place on the all time seasonal record, 6.9 inches shy of the record held by Buffalo.

W*^k - Off today, but there all weekend starting tomorrow through Tuesday.

Trains - This also would fit another discussion, but I had mentioned I had caught a NS Local being led by a SD40-series (SD40-2 I believe) unit LHF on Friday night, and I have pictures to prove it.

This one shows the entire train headed WB. It is NS C85, being led by 3377.

  3377 C85 LHF by Richard Woodworth, on Flickr" alt="NS 3377 leads C85" width="600" height="400" />

What was funny, and I just realised it now, was the other train I caught that night, an EB CSX, was being led by CSX 3327, the NS was 3377... WOW that was CLOSE!

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the evening!

I hear it is a seller's market in many places as interest rates are increasing. Of course, any model railroader should make sure there is adequate room for a layout. Ideally, it would be a clean, dry basement with stable temperatures, but not necessarily a basement.

.

This diagram (not really any sort of an accurate track plan) shows how the new STRATTON & GILLETTE layout will fit into my house.

.

The entrance to the main section of the layout will be from the living room. The access to the staging tracks will be from the bathroom in the rear of the house. I am not yet sure what form this entryway will take.

.

Making a layout fit into a Florida home with no basement has been a challenge and a very expensive remodel!

Goooooooddddd evening everyone!

Heh, heh, heh.....  Grin, grin, grin.......  Huh?  What?  Uh, just let's say that today is by far the best day I have had in my life for the last 20 years or so......  Can't really say much yet, but I may have a date lined up with the most beautiful woman I have met in many, many years....  I showed up at the Wednesday morning lenten service today and found she was sitting alone at that moment.  Went over and asked if she would like company and she grinned and told me to sit down.  She then suggested (after a chat I had with her last Sunday after church) that she was thinking that we should get together and have a longer chat..........  She has agreed to wait until my eyelid surgery heals up, and then we will make plans....  I shouldn't say exactly who she is, but some of you may have figured it out already.  I did call my oldest son and told him about the morning... He was very happy and agreed not to even tell his wife about it.  I do not want any rumors going around the town at this point in time.  I will say that both of us appeared to have big smiles on our faces during the lenten service..........Smile, Wink & Grin

The Batavia Train Show is this coming up Sunday, so I have been starting to get materials together for that.  Also celebrated this morning's conversations by going over to the fieldhouse and getting just under 2 miles of walking in!  Did 10 laps which shows me I can easily get 2 miles in (11.3 laps) as my every other day walk.  While I was there an old friend of mine who was an instrumental teacher at the Middle School with me and a member of my church showed to do his 50 laps running (9 miles).  He is back in training for another mini-marathon!  He is 3 years older than me I think!

Evening All!

Layout Front: Lumber delivery didn't quite go as expected. Not that I will go into it, but lots of problems. I will have to see what the lumber condition after they are in a dry environment for a few days. (The 1x4s seem to be fine but at least one of the 2x2s is a little dicey.) I most likely won't do business with the yard again.

2x2s from any lumber source, local yard or big box, can be dicey, even if you pick it out your self, which you should always do, any lumber you buy.  Just leave them lay around for awhile, and see what happens.

It all depends on what grade you buy.  You want something better than utility or general construction grade, to get anything decent.

Good morning .

FRRY ... Instead of 2X2's, I used particle board cut to size and fastened together. Particle board is also used for storage cabinets beneath the layout.

Mike .... That was good advice about 2x2's. I don't use them .

Ray ...... I was very happy reading your post.... I certainly wish you the best.

Galaxy ... Good seeing you.

Kevin .... Your plan looks excellent.

Steven NWP SWP ... I hope the rest of your trip goes well. Glad you saw some old passenger cars.

Cheers, everybody.

Good soggy morning from the West Coast. It is 7c and going down. A cold front from the Gulf of Alaska is headed our way and wet snow is likely.

WAY TO GO RAY! You sly dog. I hope everything works out for you two down the road. I always think the likely hood for success is better when you start as friends. I have never been on a date as such. All my relationships just evolved out of friendships. I am still on great terms with each and every one of my previous loves. My wife was #5 and the first and only one I wanted to marry. I guess the previous ones would be called friends with benefits by today's generation.

Daughter was all set to go to Italy this Summer, however, the friends she was supposed to stay with had to change things up a bit and now she can't go. That being said, it looks like she will be also working in the movie industry as an animator. She is a good artist and has made several animated short films through school. Two of them got an honorable mention at North American wide competitions. There are so many movies being made involving animation that they are screaming for people. She will be paid $38.00 an hour if she takes the job. Pretty good for a kid going into grade 12 next year. It will help fund medical school in Scotland.

Well better get on my high horse and get going. With this lousy weather, I phoned the glass joint and they can put a new windshield in the truck today. Windshields take quite the beating when we go Ghost towning into the backcountry. I had two chips turn into very large cracks all of a sudden. Wife will pick me up and we will go to Costco while it is being done. Oh, joy. Laugh

All the best to all.

As to the 2x2s, I use them for legs as you properly guessed. Why I do that is based off the NRMA HO module blueprints (4' wise by 30" deep). Those blueprints specify the use of 2x2s. All the sections that I have build for my layout are based on that same idea. (I don't use the leg levelers, however.) I'm not sure what grade they are but this is the first time that I had this much problem with them.

And, yes, I did select my own lumber. (Prior knowledge from when I built the last expansion section for the three-way turnout.) Took me an hour as a good segment of the 1x4s was not very good. Especially on the 16 footers.) If worse comes, I have a few 2x2 pieces that, as is, are too short for legs but I can use them to build some lap jointed legs that would be the right length.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a refill of my decaf would be in order...

G, Garry, Mr. B, Brent, & BigDaddy, Thanks for your encouragment!  While I have no idea where this will end up, I can tell you I have spent the two happiest days I have had (with the possible exception of when my granddaughters were born) in over 30 years....  While I dated a few years after my wife died, none of the ladies I was interested in wanted to link up with any man in their life again.  They had had some really messy divorces and terrible marriages.  There were others I could have easily linked up with (some propositioned me even...) but they were not women I would want to "say Good Morning to", shall we say...

Had my annual ENT Doc appointment today.  They are going to change my supplier for my CPAP supplies as several of their patients have had problems with the "big" company that bought out the more local company I used to get supplies from.  The new supplier is local and a member of my health insurance group so I will no longer have to pay co-pays for the supplies either.

I spent part of the day getting all the supplies and other items ready for the Great Batavia Train Show on Sunday (yep it is on Palm Sunday this year....  I was not happy about it but there is no way the club can avoid this happening once every decade or so....)  I kinda have to be there as the Division Superintendent to man the NMRA Tables....

Hope everyone has a great night out there.

Advice I will be sure to follow..... "Be sure to wear a good cologne, a nice aftershave lotion, and a strong underarm deodorant. And it might be a good idea to wear some clothes, too." - George Burns

Eving diners,

Ray good luck on your budding relationship, love is a many splendored thing (song reference intended)

And now it's throwback Thursday on the juke box with two songs coming to you from Bobby Darin.

And this is a video I posted on twitter it was made a year ago. That's me singing "Lazy River" before voice lessons, now after warming up I can belt out "Moon River" and "Love Story" the latter giving me a wee bit of trouble in the higher notes, I'm currently working on "Just The Way You Are" (not Bruno Mars but Billy Joel)

Evenin diners,

well we came down to our Mississippi get away house and it had busted pipes from the extreme cold. So I spent the evening doing plumbing. I somehow forgot to drain the cold water line and it busted in several places. Of course I had to go to the store twice which is 15 miles away. I am going to leave the water off until morinng. I am surprised it had not froze up when we were here in Jan, it was in the single digits ( somwhat unheard of here) So I guess it froze after we left. Good thing I turn the water off. That is about all. I brought me Some DCC projects to work on while I am not doing plumbing.
