UPDATE: NEW E UNITS!

So, through Blue Ridge Hobbies, I got to see the November Flyer early, and I saw new E units for preorders. Projected to come out in February, the Illinois Central, New York Central, and Southern are offered. So...

Panama Limited?

Commodore Vanderbilt/20th Century Limited??

Southern Cresent???

The future looks bright! :)

The Jet Clipper
Wasn't the late 50's 20th Century Limited combined with the Commodore Vanderbuilt?

Yes, that happened in 1957, IIRC. The smoothside Pullman cars also got a slightly revised two-tone gray paint scheme in 1953, eliminating the black "pinstripe" outlining of the lettering and stripes. Once the Commodore and Century were combined the train ran with the Budd equipment toward the head-end and the Century cars making up the last four or five cars toward the rear along with the Creek observations or sometimes a Budd Wingate Brook as a stand-in.

Original 1948 style on the left and circa 1953 on the right.

Regards, Ed

I didn't know that, Ed. You learn something new everyday, I guess!

So, assuming that there is a 20th Century Limited down the line, I'm guessing that Walthers is doing the 1953 train, because the 1948 train isn't needed. Also, if there is a Commodore Vanderbilt in the near future, that'll pair perfectly with the '53 train for a 1957, no longer all Pullman, 20th Century Limited! I was originally one for a North Coast LTD , but the 20th Century/Commodore Vanderbilt is now my most desired train. I really want to see the toolings for a full '53 Century and CV, for those who want the separate trains and a combined train. I, personally, will go for the separate Century (probably my favorite train from the East).

Wasn't the late 50's 20th Century Limited combined with the Commodore Vanderbuilt? If so, they could kill two birds with one stone with a reissue of the Century and the new run of the CV. I can imagine the "Creek" series observation cars with the faux window gaskets and factory-installed Stainless Steel grabs, and I like what I see!

The San Diegan, NCL, Texas Eagle, Auto-Train, and Panama Limited are really good shouts, too. I swear, if we need to wait another year or two for the North Coast Limited, they're getting a very strongly worded email (not really ;) ).

The Jet Clipper
After pondering on this for about a few months, I came up with a list that I want to see potentially become a reality:

A few days ago Walthers sent out a survey. In it they asked about interest in the following trains and individual cars:

How likely would you be to purchase the following HO scale WalthersProto name trains, if offered at a price similar to our current name trains and (unless noted) modeled as they appeared in the streamlined era?

Burlington Northern - Empire Builder  (late 1960s)

Odd.  I didn't receive the survey.  Guess they don't want my opinion.

Since there was no Burlington Northern in the late '60's, and they use the magic words EMPIRE BUILDER, it sounds like what they're talking about is painting their long-standing EB in the BN white on green style.  Likely with no new cars at all.  For me, that's not all bad.  I might pick up an F unit or two in BN, and a few cars to run in a later Amtrak train.  Perhaps they could do some E's, too, for the Burlington part of the run.  Inicidentally, I've got some Burlington E's on order for just such a a thing.  But pre-BN/Amtrak.

I AM glad to see the Twin Cities Zephyr there, though.  Nice.

After pondering on this for about a few months, I came up with a list that I want to see potentially become a reality:

-1938/40 "Broadway Limited" (the ones with the heavyweight and streamlined diners)

-1938 "Super Chief"

-1960's "Commodore Vanderbilt/20th Century Limited (Proto treatment w/ window gaskets and plated cars where applicable. Maybe reissues of the cars released in 2008 for a 1948-1960's train??)

-"Prospector"

-"Panama Limited"

-"Southern Cresent"

-"North Coast Limited" (maybe with some SP&S scheme cars for later trains)

-"Sunset Limited"

-"Bluebird"

-"Hummingbird"

-"Golden State"

-"Texas Special" (That's one I haven't heard of in a while)

I got one.  I got one!!:

The Twin Cities Zephyr:

Anyone out there like dome cars????

And.  Walthers is coming out with Burlington E8's in a few months.  Of course, those in the picture are E7's.  But Eights will do nicely.

And it's kinda short.  For people who can't field a 16 car train.  SEVEN cars.  Very nice.

Get started, Walthers!

Ed

Since I'm in N, the Walther trains don't mean that much to me.

However, this train is special and Kato's CZ cars offer a good start for producing it. So would like to see this done especially since it is relativly short and so better to model. (not to mention Cool)

I think that the Prospector would be a great choice- it's short enough that even people like me who don't model the D&RGW might consider it, because it's "neat."

I know that I'd probably buy one.

I'll 2nd the Prospector, preferrably a '64-'67 version. It's a fun train, and IIRC, not too long, and I'm sure Walthers would paint some trailers to go with it.

And more Viewliners please.

I agree on the Crescent, but would really love to see one with a green and gold PS4 on the front.

Walthers can make the cars and BLI can finally stop being stupid and make the obviously needed PS-4 that hasn't had a proper model of it since brass for some strange reason. Seriously that boggles my mind, why haven't we had a PS-4 since brass? If you say demand isn't there, you're wrong, I know a battleship's worth of people who would jump at a chance for a gorgeous green Pacific like that.

You can easily get a smooth running PFM Ps-4 unpainted in good or better condition for under $300.  You would have to spend more on sound, DC, and a good paint job, but by the time you get there, you're probably not too far past what Rapido is asking for a Royal Hudson.

I think they should do the Lehigh Valley's Black Diamond, with an Otto Kuhler-streamlined Pacific to haul it. Yeah, that'll happen. Eric

They need to go North of the Boarder. CN's Ocean or Super Continental. Or CP's Dominion. The Canadian was done well ( but very expensivly by Rapido )

The Daylight colors are very beautiful, but I think it's time to try another scheme.  That's why I suggested the Sunset Limited.

I'm thinking a western train this time.

There's the previously commented on North Coast Limited.

A Burlington train wouldn't be unreasonable, epecially with Walthers' upcoming E-8A's ready to pull it.

An SP train wouldn't be out of line.  Perhaps the Sunset Limited that ran down south.  Silver with a red letterboard, as I recall.

Any of those would be well received, I think.

Ed

That's a pretty good shout, and I'm always up for an Espee train. There are the ALCO PA's in the Mainline series, so possibly we could see a Daylight PA or E8 (as you brought up) in the coming years. Maybe an SP train or two, of which will be welcomed with open arms, will follow.

The Southern RY is a good choice for a Passenger Streamliner. I love the "Crescent Limited" in the 1970's with four E8's on the head end and that PS Dome Car near the back of the train.

But, the question is, "Will it SELL?"

Not only would I buy one, but plan my next layout around it.

ATSFGuy,
When were Walthers passenger cars $20/30?  In 2003, the Super Cheif cars were $40 ea. ($54 in today's money) with plastic couplers and no grabirons installed.

https://web.archive.org/web/20031203230018/http://www.walthers.com:80/exec/page/super_chief

Today's Walthers cars are $70 to $85, just $16 to $31 more than they were 15 years ago in today's money.  Yet the ATSF cars today are now plated, have metal knuckle couplers and have all the grabs installed.  How much would you charge someone to install grabs and couplers on their cars?  I don't think $16 to $31 is unreasonable for that job.

Why do you think it's "completely ridiculous" to spend $100 for an entire passenger train?  Even at your incredible low-ball price of $20 per car, a decent 10-car train would still cost $200.  It doesn't make any sense unless all one does is short commuter runs.

I am partial because I am a modern era modeler, but how about a modern Amtrak consist? Capitol limited maybe? Or City of New Orleans?

They already make all the components for a Superliner or Amfleet train,  although the baggage cars are tough to find. They're just a reissue away on the Viewliner sleepers from anything else.

My bid for trains would be the Southern Ry Tennessean corrugated tran set. You would have a place to run an N&W J, Southern E-units or one of those plentiful PFM or PSC Ps-4's.

I'd also like to see an N&W Pocahontas or Powhatan Arrow. They could use Redbird GP-9's.

A Reading Crusader or the North Coast Limited would be nice too, as long as we're wishing!
