Dummy or cheap Power?

I'm at a small delimma here. I'm considering ordering a FT-B unit that will need to be modified for my needs. For $6 more I can get a powered one, of course it can't be of that high of quality. Should I spend the $6 extra and run it until it dies, then rip out the internals to create a dummy, or just go for the dummy and assume a powered one puts more strain on my good A unit?
