Morning All,
Currently it is 40 with an expected high of 67 under mostly sunny skies.
Back to w**k today, this is the start of my 6 day stretch.
I hope to put the finishing touches on the Hardwood Furniture building tonight. We shall see how that plays out.
Prayers to all in need.

Good Evening Folks,
it´s been a dull Autumn day, with nothing proper to do, other than doing the regular grocery run.
I find it difficult to wind down after these many weeks of over-activity. Wish I could take Petra along for a little seaside vacation, just for relaxation and a good meal, now and then. But no money, no vacation ...
Lee - good to see you back here in the Diner. Congrats to the newlyweds
CU tomorrow!
Congratulations Lee & Dorothy,
That is wonderful news. May you have a very long and Blest satisfying life together.
(with many train rides)
Can't stay long as I am off to work for an evening event today.

hustle_muscle Good evening! I'll take a steak sandwich cooked at medium. Finished up building and installing a diaphragm on my Athearn RTR F7A. Sadly, the one for my B unit broke, so now I need to make a trip down to the hobby shop and look for another one and maybe some new truck side frames for the A and B units. I even got one of those close-coupling kits installed on both units, and believe me, those kits make your Blue Box/RTR F7's look a million times better than they were before. Have a good evening everybody!

Hustle-Muscle .......... It's good to see you in the Diner! .. ..... I don't recall your being the the DIner before, but if I'm wrong, sorry...... I would like to know about your Montana model railroad. Please tell us about it!
LEE & DOROTHY ! ......... A big congratulations to you! ..... Another railroader couples up!
Todd .... I was a bit confused with your explanation to JimCG about Chinese women and restaurants.
Paul .... I like the barn in your photo, and I will be interested in the hardwood furniture building when you are ready to show it.
Lee mentioned the shutdown. ..... Here the rangers kicked out campers who had season passes in the Land Between the Lakes. Also, Smokey The Bear is furloughed here as I mentioned a couple of days ago. We can't go see the buffalos too.
Ulrich .... Are there any October-fests for you to attend there just for fun? .
Saw a big truck wreck today between here and town on US 68. It's an old 2-lane highway with curves and hills. The truck went "off road" smashing down some trees.
Planning to work on the layout this evening.
Happy Model Railroading.

Evening guys
Got that F45 back together and running. I don't have a rear light because an LED won't fit over the speaker in the rear of the unit. However the LEDs look so much better for the headlights. A bonus to doing this is that it frees up 4 microbulbs for me to use for beacons. I have my 2 U30Cs and a U33C on my bench awaiting beacons and decoders. I found a D13SRJ in my pile of stuff that works, but the pin for the blue wire on it's 8-pin plug broke off somewhere along the line. I think I can get one from my MR club. Then I can put beacons in all 3 of those U-boats. I also found my stash of prewired SMDs and details west beacons. So I have to find a really small and sharp drill bit to drill through the metal base on some of them.
Lee, long time, no see. Congrats on getting married.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
Tomorrow my father and step mother will hit the road. They're going to drive all the way to Roswell, New Mexico. As my father says, 'It's cheaper than flying. A whole lot cheaper.'. Now the question is will they be speaking to each other by the time they get back?Had to uninstall AVG this morning and do a new install. Then on restart the computer wouldn't do anything but sit there with a cursor blinking on an otherwise blank screen. Well either there was a bad connection inside the case or the CMOS settings had gotten fouled up somehow. So I checked the CMOS settings first. Sure enough the first boot device had somehow been changed from the hard drive to some kind of USB multi-link device. I set it back to hard drive, saved the changes and rebooted. All went well. Will it stay that way? We'll see in the morning. The CMOS battery may be getting weak. It's been in there for near to ten years now.Time for me to call it a night. As we continue our tour Maine by train, lets all board the SR&RL!
The Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad began its non-profit history as a project of the Phillips Historical Society about 1970. In the 1980s we became independent. Then once again, in the early 1990s, we became a division of the Phillips Historical Society. Effective in August 2003, we are, once again, independent of our good friends at the Phillips Historical Society. The Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax-exempt foundation dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the original railroad.
Brief History:
The year 1879 brought new life to Franklin County, Maine. The Sandy River Railroad was born from the need local people felt for a railroad to connect northern Franklin County with the Maine Central Railroad, which terminated in Farmington.
Rangeley, a resort area, wanted public transportation, as well as did Strong, Phillips, Kingfield and other communities. Vast tracts of timber grew in northern Franklin County, with no way to ship the manufactured wood products to southern markets.
The economical two-foot gauge was chosen, which required a minimum of grading, smaller ties and rails, and smaller locomotives and rolling stock. The two foot gauge concept was brought to the Sandy River RR by George Mansfield of Massachusetts. Mr. Mansfield had seen the Welsh two foot gauge railways and initiated the use of this gauge in the U.S. on the short lived (Nov.1877 - June 1878) Billerica & Bedford RR in his home state.
1890 saw the birth of the Phillips and Rangeley Railroad, which began operations the following year. This 28.5 mile extension of the narrow gauge brought an increased tourist trade to the Rangeley area. This line had many long, steep grades and sharp curves. The "Rangeley Express" with its three round trips daily from Farmington to Rangeley, carried high-class city folk for weeks of relaxation in the beautiful Rangeley Lakes area.
Several large lumber mills sprung up along the railroad. Timber was cut and loaded onto flatcars and log bunks. Branch lines were built into timber country. Larger locomotives were purchaced to haul the long freights which emerged from these mills. Phillips became a bustling railroad town where all major repairs were made to the rolling stock, and where new flatcars and boxcars were constructed.
Financial difficulties plagued this collection of two-foot gauge railroads quite frequently, until a banker from Gardiner, Maine purchased the controlling shares of these lines, and in 1908 merged them into one railroad, the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad, or SR&RL.
This new railroad owned several hundred boxcars and flatcars, 20 locomotives, about 20 passenger cars and cabooses, several snow plows, flangers, and work cars. Besides this equipment, the SR&RL owned over 120 miles of track - the longest two-foot gauge railroad in America.
The Maine Central Railroad acquired ownership of the SR&RL in 1911, owning it until 1923. Many improvements were made during these years. New locomotives were purchased and much rolling stock was added to the roster. Locomotives and cars were equipped with air brakes and automatic couplers.
uring the 1920's, trucks and automobiles began a new way of life for Franklin County residents, and by 1930 the railroad was declining. Trains were fewer, and passengers lessened.
he SR&RL's demise came in 1935-1936. Cars were sold or burned, locomotives were scrapped, and the rail was ripped up. This left only the empty grades, buildings, and an occasional boxcar or passenger car acquired by an area resident or business, mostly for storage uses.
Today's operations:
Since 1970, an effort has been made to rebuild a part of this railroad, restore some of the passenger and freight cars, and lay rail on a portion of the old P&R grade in Phillips. This purely volunteer effort begun as the Sandy River Railroad Park, continues today under the name of the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad as a non-profit division of the Phillips Historical Society.
On operating days, we give rides behind a replica of Sandy River locomotive #4 hauling passengers in either an 1884 vintage coach and/or a caboose built in the 1980's. Our ride includes a walking/talking tour of the site of the covered bridge and our new, 4 stall roundhouse facility built on the foundations of the P&R "Old Stone Fort." The short ride through the woods, along the edge of the fields, and the glimpse of the Sandy River through the coach windows is something you won't forget. The swaying of the passenger car you are in, the clickety-clack of wheels over the joints, the rumble of the locomotive, and the sound of the whistle bring back the past.
In 1985, the 50th anniversary of the demise of the common carrier operations of the SR&RL, the name was once again activated, with the Sandy River Railroad Park once again becoming the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad. Long term projects focus on car restoration, with more distant hopes of increasing the length of our ride.
We will visit this weekend, but also ride the Ghost train:
** Ghost Train ONLY (No daytime runs). 6:30 - 9:00PM. $5 adult (13 & older), $3 child under 13. Babes in arm ride free.

Good Morning!!!

Garry- Well, let me figure how to put this as short as possible. I was joking to Jim about going to a Chinese buffet to check out the waitresses to maybe find a potential lady friend because of my frequent comments kidding around about how great they are etc, etc ha ha ha kinda thing. So far we were on the same sheet of music. Then he said something about not being that fond of Asian food and them moving/closing. Now there’s where I misunderstood what he meant. He apparently meant he didn’t care too much for the food enough to go in there frequently to meet/get to know them like I do. I thought he meant if he did find a friend, he didn’t like the food enough to have to eat it all the time because she would only eat Asian food, and that’s pretty much all he would have to eat. That’s why I came back with they eat other things too. And somewhere in there he thought he misunderstood what I meant based on what I was saying, but it was I who misunderstood what he meant. Still confused? Me too and I know what I mean.
Jeffrey- I assume there will be someone around to assist you with food and such while your Dad and SM are alien hunting? I haven’t heard you reference the home nurse lately. I know you can probably get around a whole lot better now, but just curious if you have someone to check on you ever so often you know.
Ok. Once again, not sure what I’ll do today but now the yard needs mowed. Kinda sorta. Part of the issue, not all of it, but part, is a friend of mines son, actually I should say a friend of mine as he and his sister are friends too, not just the children of a friend (these are the people who now own the restaurant uptown we all wo*rked at and still do), has bought a house. An old house, but a nice house and a bit of a fixer upper, but not bad to live in. Problem is, there are many things that need to be addressed in a 110 year old house. They run into things as he’s trying to do some of the work himself, but needs help due to the domino effect and of course Mr Murphy who drops by to help on every little project. So I get phone calls to see if I can stop in and help him…..well, almost daily. I don’t mind. I like him and he’s a good guy. Besides, his wife is purebred Vietnamese, pregnant with their 3rd, cute as a button, very nice and has terrific aim. Quick too. Plus she knows where I live and claims she’ll tunnel over in the dark and I’l wake up in their basement until the jobs done with nothing but water and left over rice to eat. So I figure it’s easier this way. PLUS her Mother ( who speaks very little English despite her what 20 years over here and feels anyone who doesn’t work 16 hour days at least 6 days a week is “laazy”!) makes these killer eggrolls and when they go to see her or when she comes to visit them (she lives in Champaign) she always makes a bunch of these things and I wanna stay on the list of recipients .
Wonder what she’d say if she found out I was retired….”You too young to retire!!! You LAZY!!!! You get job!”
Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!
Well that got me TOP!!! Eat up while you can, next month the government may quit payin me.

I am relatively new to the neighborhood. I have driven past the diner a number of times, but have not poked my head in until today. Seems like a nice place to visit. I will just sit over here at the corner of the bar, nurse my hot chocolate, and take it all in.

Mornin' everyone!
Janie, I'll have a short stack of buttermilk pancakes with real NYS maple Syrup and a cup (maybe 3) of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR Mug please.
I have another busy day ahead of me. Have to pick up a few things at the grocery store, do a couple loads of wash, then head out to my sisters house... I also need to repack the Division materials to make sure I have what I need for the Train Show display this Sunday in Batavia, NY. If any of you are planning to go, stop by the Lakeshores Division NMRA Display and say hi! I'm the old guy with the beard.
Jeffrey, wouldn't it be easier to crawl around on all fours?
Todd, I love your explanations.... They have a "guilty" sound to them....
It's a Barry kind of day around here... (Where is he anyway?) Dark and gloomy. Currently 53°F with a high of 69°F this afternoon under cloudy skies. May get a few breaks in the clouds this afternoon, but not a great day to produce electricity.
Ran out of Magenta Ink last night.... More should be arriving today. Hopefully I will have enough to finish the booklet and get the reunion stuff behind me! The ladies on the committee and I will celebrate by going out for lunch the day we put them all together.
Best get myself moving! Later...

Good morning. It's 69° with 90% humidity. The high will be 85° and will feel like 90°.My father and step mother left within the last twenty minutes and are on their way. Me, the cat and the dog have the run of the house. I don't know about the cat and the dog but I'm going to watch some movies. Sometime this weekend or next week I may get started on writing a text adventure type computer game on the IIe. I've been putting that off because the Apple's keyboard and disk drives are noisy. I don't use it while my father is asleep during the day (weird work schedules) and I don't want to disturb him. I've used it when he's at work but then my step mother is here and complains about the noise of the keys drowning out the TV. That's total BS. The keyboard is nowhere near that loud and there's two walls, two room width closets ad two doors between it and the two places she watches TV in the house. I've told her there's a simple cure. Turn the TV up. My father tells me there's a better cure. Ignore her. She was used to living alone so there was no one around. Now there're family members around and she can learn to put up with some noise. She's going to have to put up with it too. I'm not stopping the use of my IIe because she doesn't like the clack-click-clack of the keyboard and the chatter of the disk drives or the beeping of the computers speaker. In other news, I've dropped AVG as my antivirus solution and I'm trying out the free version of Avast!. This system only has 1GB of RAM (120 MBs used for video RAM) and a dual-core Pentium Celeron D processor, quite possibly the slowest 'high speed' processor they've ever produced. I can click on a 'quick-link' for something on a USB drive and I can count off the seconds, usually eight to ten until something happens. It's like it has to go search for the flash drive then file a MIA report about it. I'm sure anybody who has had a computer with a Celeron D processor has had similar experiences. Well AVG was taking up so much of the computers resources that the memory would crash or the computer would quite literally 'forget' what it was doing. So far Avast! is doing very well. It's running a full system scan and I can't tell that anything's going on unless I check the stats.

Good Afternoon Diners!
Yes I'm still alive here in, soon to be, Winterpeg. It is a very balmy 65F here right now which is a lot warmer than the normal 50F. We are expecting a Colorado low tomorrow which means rain at this time of year.
Well I must confess I haven't been in for a few months as I just don't seem to have much to say but I see Garry has sent out the search party so I thought I would respond.
I'm presently gearing up for the end of my work career at the end of the month as that is my offical retirement date. I guess I'm looking forward to it but it is a major change after working here for 35 years and a number of years elsewhere before that. My company made me an offer I couldn't refuse, and it wasn't a chunk of lead, quite the contrary, so I will depart on a happy note. It always was my plan to stay here until they decided to pay me off to get rid of me, and the timing has worked out very well. I will be 66 , 3 days later.
Not a lot happening on the RR front except for the sell off of some locos and rolling stock I decided no longer fit my layout. I have been getting rid of my CP equipment plus the odd CN piece. So far I have sold off 7 locos but admit I did buy 2. My plan is to have just CN and to that end I sold a Life Like PK2 SW9 that was CP and I bought the same loco in CN green and gold. I was really surprised to find the CN loco, NIB from a Vancouver hobby shop considering it is 7 or 8 years old. After cleaning out and replacing the lube, it runs well on DC so I will put in a decoder in a few weeks. I bought the NCE replacement board decoder as I had in the CP loco but now I'm thinking I might put in a Loksound micro instead. My original plan was to add a MRC sound decoder but now think the Loksound would be a better idea especially as even the NCE must be hardwired so why not just do it all at once? I've also sold off about 15 pieces of rolling stock. I'm only buying highly detailed pieces from now on so most of the Athearn stuff is gone. If the grab irons aren't seperate then I won't buy so my purchases have been somewhat limited lately. My layout is only a 4x9 so I can't have much on the layout at one time.
The N scale layout will be the main task starting in November and I hope to get quite a few of the 14 building kits I have constructed. They are mostly simple DPM kits but the painting is somewhat daunting especally the window frames. I have quite a few N scale locos that really have been barely run. I put in a decoder, test on the layout and back in the box they go so it is time to get some running done plus a little more scenery. All the trackwork is done but I find that rather than running that layout I go to the HO one when I want to run trains even though the N layout has a more interesting track plan.
Todd, I do admit I read your posts everyday as you are one funny guy, as in humorous.
Once I become a ROF, I expect I will be in more often so will see you soon.
This is the first post I have ever made from work as doing so is really against policy but who cares now.
CN Charlie
Hi CN Charlie,
Glad you are back Diner wise. We have been wondering what you were up to.
Congratulations on the buy-out pkg.and I hope you enjoy a long and healthy retirement.
In regard to the layout, someone once said that you can't serve to Masters. That's why I have just stuck with HO. I have a hard enough time getting to one layout let alone two. But to each his own.
How is the new car working out?
There certainly has been a lot happen here since you were last in. Mainly, Jeff is now a one legged Cherokee long distance runner, but is still waiting for the over drive to be fitted to his stump and then we will never catch up to him.
It is only about 10 degrees c. here today so with the rain you'll be getting expect that warm air you had today to slip away. About 70% of the leaves are down here and it is starting to look pretty bare. Makes one wonder what you did with your summer's wages, don't it ?
Let us know how Blind Bruce is doing if you hear from him. He's been away a while too.
Take care,
Johnboy out.......................................
Evening All,
I hope everyone is well.
Well it has been several months since I have checked in. Last weekend we finished the last room upstairs in the wood flooring project (about 1400 sq. ft.) It was the train room (loft) so it was more difficult than just removing furniture. Today I re-grouted a bathroom and made myself a workbench out of PVC piping and a spare counter top I had. We still have the stairs to do but are taking a break before we do them.
Train wise I have not done very much since I have been gone. I built a couple of coal hoppers (Accurail) and did some coal loads. The layout has been covered with painting tarps since we were using a saw up stairs. Tomorrow I will finish putting together the train room.
W**k has been w**k. What can you say about it? My current schedule is Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
I hope everyone has a great weekend and prayers for those in need.

jeffrey-wimberly Well here we have CN Charlie and Curt Webb back in the diner. Welcome back guys.
I'm glad to see both CN Charlie and Curt!
CN Charlie Congratulations about retiring! Fair warning. You might find out your friends and family have plans for your time. You might hear "You are retired and have nothing to do, and so I need you to do a favor for me. Sometimes, I remind the younger people I have less time than they do because I have fewer remaining years of my life. ..... Two layouts with 2 scales sounds ambitious to me, but I have considered having a second layout with outdoor G scale. That is not likely however.
Curt .... Flip has kept me briefly informed about your being busy. I hope to see you getting back to normal after this. It is time for the Pennsy to get back in business.
Sue was in here several times in recent weeks, and I hope she comes back. I like the modeling she and Larry have done with Pacific Northwest scenery.
JohnBoy... Is your son getting settled okay in Billings?
Another Canadian who has been absent a long time is Bob Seamonster. has anyone heard from him?

Hmmmm. Top honors

Been working on coring out the beacons I have in my parts stash. I don't think I'll be able to get a mini-bulb into some of the beacons as the beacons are too small. I have SMDs for those that I can use, but I still have to drill a hole into a white metal casting for the magnet wire. That'll be fun...
Curt and Charlie, good to see you guys back
Garry, Like the SDs. What part do you use for those lights on them?
Jeff, you have a hopper of beans? What car would be used for cheese?
Evenin' folks!
Janie, just a decaf for me right now...
Good to see some of the MIAs here in the diner! Welcome back guys!
I have finished printing the 80 reunion booklets we are doing... Used 24 ink cartridges to do it. Lucky I buy them in bulk and get them from a 3rd. party manufacturer for $3.50 apiece. It will end up costing the committee about half what it would have to take the job to a professional printer. Sometime next week we will get together and assemble them and get everything ready to mail. That will be the last bit of work for the reunion. Been a fun summer, but I think I am ready to get back to model railroading for a while. I also have lots of yard work to get done before snow flies!
Hit a new record again driving home from my sisters house. Today I went straight downtown to near the lake to get my allergy shot. About 2 miles more than it would be to my house. Since the route is downhill, when I turned off the PiP, the mileage indicator said I got 295 mpg for the trip. Too bad the drive to Batavia and back will kill my mpg for this tank! I still could get my first 1000 mile tank of gas this month though. I have put 200 miles on this tank so far and the gas gauge still reads full. Love it!
Speaking of Sister's House... Clim, the feral cat has decided I am a good human and now is my friend. The last few days as I feed him he has let me pet him. Yesterday I sat down on her porch steps and he came over and rubbed by my back, then sat down next to me and let me pet him. Today I went back in the house after feeding him and he jumped up on the table on the porch and meowed looking in the window. I went back outside, sat down, and he came right over for some attention. This is pretty good for a cat that just a week ago ran away as soon as I came up on the porch.
The indoor cat, Claude, I think may be a Scottish Wildcat! He is huge (over 20 lbs and half grown), loves water, gets in the tub with my sister when she takes a shower, and has a heavy, big framed body with a wide tail, as well as all the predominate tiger markings that the Scottish Wildcat has... I happened upon a story about them (they are an endangered animal with only about 400 left in the wild in Scotland), and as I read it and saw the photos, I became more and more convinced they were showing photos of Claude! How she ended up with a cat like that I have no idea. He is a sweet cat but very active and gets into everything... I dunno?
About ready to call it a night. Prayers for all in need!
Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.
